Why write a book on baptist history, especially in light of the fact that there are many good books available? Primarily, this book was written to be used as a basic primer on Baptist history covering the history of the Baptists up to this present day. Come of our Baptist forefathers were lauded, but many of them knew the flames of persecution. This book, though not a footnoted, detailed treatise, will help both laymen and preachers understand the sacrifice and significance of our heritage.
This is an excellent primer to Baptist history. For those who don't know much about Baptists and our history, this is a book I highly recommend. It's short and to the point. And for those who do know about Baptists and our history, I still recommend it. It is exactly what it says it is, "a layman's survey of Baptist history".
As Baptists, we have a heritage that is completely unrivaled. Our history can literally be traced in the blood of our brothers and sisters who have bravely died torturous deaths for believing the Bible. They were courageous, bold, and unafraid in the face of horrors such as being burned alive at the stake, beaten until they bled to death, and drowned.
For many years they were the only group that wasn't granted religious liberty, though they tried to live peaceably. This is our story.
Dr. Johnson does a wonderful job not only telling the major points if our history, but also explaining what makes a Baptist a Baptist.
Walking away from this book, I am even more proud to bear the name Baptist. It is an honor that has been paid for in blood. I will not be ashamed of that.
This book claims to be a layman's primer on Baptist history. At this, it excels; The People Called Baptists is an ideal starting place for anyone unfamiliar with the topic. I found it simplistic in style and content, and the lack of citations means it's hard to use for academic purposes, but if you're looking for a brief overview, the book is well worth the read.
Best book I’ve read so far on Baptists. It was easy to understand and comprehensive. It was a quick read. I’ll definitely read it again and buy my own copy
