"A landmark collection of documents by the field's leading scholar. This reader includes beautifully written introductions and a fascinating array of never-before-published primary documents. These treasures from the archives offer a new picture of colonial Saint-Domingue and the Haitian Revolution. The translations are lively and colorful." --Alyssa Sepinwall, California State University San Marcos
This book is really helpful when researching this topic when one does not have access to archival material. However, Geggus provides little to no context for events making it difficult to know why events were occurring. Luckily this is my research field so I knew what was going on but I don’t recommend this book to someone who is just trying to learn about the Haitian revolution for the first time. He makes the assumption that his reader knows what’s going on and is slightly elitist in that sense.
I read this after having read DuBois's Avengers of the New World: The Story of the Haitian Revolution, so it was particularly enlightening to read some of the primary sources of that history. This would make a great addition to a graduate school reading list.
This book is an excellent learning resource. The introduction is a nice overview of the events, and the rest of the book is a collection of primary sources covering a range of interesting subjects related to the Haitian Revolution. It primary sources are really fascinating and come from the whole range of Haitian society before, during, and after.
This book is a selection of documents with introductions by David Geggus. It was my introduction to the Haitian Revolution. I maybe would have liked more context from David Geggus. You should have a firm understanding of the Haitian Revolution before reading this book.
