This is a good picture of the progress of an advanced nationalist in the years leading up to 1916, and how much these were people from the cultural, rather than political sphere. McDonagh was a signatory of the 1916 Proclamation, but his role in the Rising itself was limited - his garrison saw very little action. He does come across as a very attractive figure though, a poet, a loving husband and father, and a messer.
