Salman Akhtar is an Indian-American psychoanalyst practicing in the United States. He is an author and Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

Harika bir kitaptı. Göç alanında şimdiye kadar okuduklarım içinde en iyisi. Akhtar, oldukça çetrefilli konuları anlatıyor: kimlik edinimi, psikanalitik açıdan anne, ana dil ve anavatan ilişkisi, çeşitli yaşam dönemleri açısından göçün zorlukları, travmatik etkileri ve nihayetinde bu süreçlerin sağaltımında psikanalistin/terapistin yapması gerekenler... Kendisi de göçmen olan Akhtar, anlatısını şiirlerle, çeşitli edebi metinlerden alıntılala zengin ve keyifli kılmış, ortak konularda yazdığı ve etkilendiğini her seferinde belirttiği Vamık Volkan'ın yakınlarda okuduğum Göçmenler ve Mülteciler isimli kitabından çok daha doyurucu ve anlaşılır buldum Göç ve Kimlik'i, Volkan'ın eseri Türkçe yazılmış olduğu hâlde üstelik (çevirinin çok iyi olduğu konusunda da bir parantez açmış olayım), eserin sonundaki sözlükçe kısmı ise göç ile akademik olarak ilgilenen herkese çok lazım olacak terimleri içeriyor, daha evvel salt göç terimlerine dair bir sözlük görmemiştim, küçük de olsa böyle bir şeyin varlığı çok hoşuma gitti.

Göçmen süregelen, belki de hiç bitmeyecek bir yasa sahiptir ve bunu anlamanın psikoterapötik derinlikleri vardır. Salman Akhtar bu derinlikleri psikanalitik kuramla açıklarken vaka örnekleri, klinik tecrübe ve göçmen kimliğine başvurur. Göçmen terapist kimliğimle yazdığım bir makaleye yardımcı olur diyerek aldığım bu eser benim için referanstan öte, adeta yol gösterici bir baş yapıt oldu.
