Broken Promises

Rate this book
It was Rome and I for as long as I can remember.

We were neighbors, two kids growing together in a poor part of town, playing adult games we didn’t fully understand. He was beauty and disaster covered in ink. He fought for me and for his family when we couldn’t fight for ourselves.

I promise.

When Rome said those two words, I took them to heart. It was an oath, a vow, an assurance. Then he broke them.

But we were kids who didn’t know much about loyalty, love, or security back then.

When my mother dies unexpectedly and I’m compelled to go back to the old neighborhood to raise my little sister, the ghosts of my past are there, waiting in the shadows. And Rome and I are forced to face our choices, and each other once again.

My name is Eden. Rome was my best friend. He was everything to me… until he wasn’t. But maybe the promises he made weren’t broken like I thought. Maybe he was there for me all along, even when I thought he wasn’t.

Rome and Eden were best friends and neighbors in the blush of young first love. She thought they would be forever together but he broke his promise to her and they were apart for years. Now she's moved back to town to care for her sister, and Rome's still there, representing her broken heart. Or is he? Did he really break his promises to her?

Seeing Eden again has Rome more determined than ever to get her back. He never told her the real reason he did what he did back then. Knowing she has a boyfriend now, one he has a less than positive association with, just means he'll have to work harder to convince her that they're forever.

I love second chance stories, especially ones like this. Eden and Rome's story is an angsty, emotional rollercoaster. It's obvious from their first reunion that their love is still there, they just had to get over the lies and the revelations surrounding them. His brother, her sister, the people they love and have to watch out for, their history and shared pain, so much to dig through and find the truth. I was cheering them on the whole time. I can't think of a couple who deserve their second chance more than they do.

Rome and Eden grew up together. Started as best friends and Rome would be there to protect Eden. As they got older their feelings changed but neither of them telling the other how they felt. I liked that we got their back story of how they met and what it was like growing up. It paints a picture and builds the narrative.

After years apart, Eden arrives back in town, having left school, because of a family tragedy. She reminisces about the past and whether she'll ever see Rome again. Eden finds herself working at a Construction company and then eventually starts dating the boss. Because of this relationship she comes face to face with Rome again. Straight away you could feel the tension between the two coming off the pages.

The further we progress, the more we realise that there is more to this story than we're seeing. Michelle has managed to weave a tale that is full of angst and drama. Eden doesn't know the extent of what her boyfriend is involved in, but Rome does and he's trying to do his best to keep her safe.

You could tell these two characters had a special connection and their falling out all those years ago, was blown out of proportion. But you do and say silly things when you're a kid and don't know any better. This book had a really good storyline that mixed genres and I liked that you didn't really know what you were getting. All characters you can't help but like, and they all had varying personalities. This was a slow burn romance, with plenty of heated glances, it had some dark undertones and mild steam, overall a really well balanced book that I really enjoyed reading. My first from this author and won't bet the last. Thank you!

Wow. I knew I was going to love this book, I just had no idea how much I was going to love it.

Eden and Rome were best friends growing up, until their naivities allowed them to distance from each other. Eden moves away and only returns when her mum dies and she needs to look after her little sister, Ellie. It's bitter sweet when Eden and Rome see each other again. Rome has a lot going on himself, trying to clear his brothers name. Eden and Rome realise their lives are more intertwined than they thought.

Read if you love:
🥊 Friends to lovers
❤️ Second chance romance
🥊 Steam (not too much of it though!)
❤️ Found family
🥊 HEA
❤️ Slow-burn
🥊 Suspense
❤️ First person / dual POV

The romance. The plot. The spice. The character development. The angst. I loved it all so much.

Definitely recommend.

Eden and Rome grew up together in not the best neighborhood. But they are childhood friends who look out for each other and have each other’s back.
No wonder that their feelings turn into something more when they are older. But a happy end isn’t near because their feelings are the circumstance that tears them apart.
Eden leaves town after finishing high school but has to return to take care of her younger sister.
While Eden tries to survive and take care of her sister, Rome has his own things to take care of.
Clearing his brother’s name who was accused of something he didn’t do. What Eden nor Rome know is that their lives are more intertwined than they thought.
But dropping your walls and communicating in the realest way possible is the key for a happily ever after. Despite loving each other. But is this even possible?
Suspense, steam and found family. Here is something in it for everyone.

A wonderful story

I read this book as an ARC. Michelle Scott is a new to me author.  Broken Promises is the story of two childhood friends turned sweethearts. Both are from the wrong side of the tracks and struggle to grow up and come together. Misunderstandings, naivety, and circumstances separate the two but life has other ideas for the fated pair. A story of love and struggle to survive in a truly cruel world. This story is original and good but could have been a little spicier. I don't care so much for writing in the first person but you get the point of view from both Eden and Roman throughout the story. It's well written and I look forward to future books from this author.

Eden had a rough childhood….her mother cared more about getting her next high, then feeding, bathing and keeping clothes and food in the house for her daughter. Rome understood her pain, he had it a little better than her but he understood and always tried to help and support her. These two thought they were going to be everything to each other. Eden loved him with everything she had and she believed that he felt the same way. They went their separate ways for several years but…it’s different now, can they be friends again?! By starting slow, being honest with yourself and each other?! Due to her mothers unexpected death Eden is back in town to raise her much younger sister. When Eden and Rome see each other it’s painful for them both. They know how much they truly want and love the other person they just really need to drop the walls down and be honest for once and for all. But most of all….They need to work together to get some bad people out of town. The bad people that are hurting and effecting people around them that they love. This was an amazing fast paced read with a great inspirational story and some crazy let’s get that bad guys action mixed right in! I’m excited to read more books by this author! I just Enjoyed all these characters so much!

This is Rome and Eden’s journey. These two grew up together as neighbours, and best friends, and over time their feelings changed towards each other, but never revealing their feelings to each other. Now a tragedy brings Eden back to town, but it is only a matter of time before they cross paths. This is a well written slow burn, fast paced, emotional roller coaster, with family. Friendships, promises, tragedy, tension, romance, twists, survival, and love, which leads to an entertaining page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This was a good one! Eden and Rome are childhood friends who live near eachother in a bad neighborhood. They take care of each other and make sure the other is protected.

As they grow, so do their feelings for eachother. Instead of bringing them closer, their feeling push them apart.

Eden leaves after high school but is forced to return to take care of her younger sister. She hasn’t seen Rome in 3 years but as soon as they see each other, it’s as though no time has passed.

Eden is trying to survive while taking care of her sister. Rome is also on a mission to vindicate his brother who has been wrongly accused of a crime. Little do they know, they are integral in each others plans.

This book has it all: intrigue, spice, genuine connection, found family and a HEA!

Well, this book had more twists and turns than a roller coaster and I am here for it. This friends to lovers/second chance style romance follows Eden and her childhood best friend, Rome, as they navigate new waters and life changes.

This journey had so much feeling behind it that I found myself fully invested pretty early on. The story grew and developed so well, and I wasn’t ready for it to be over.

I think I could read about Eden and Rome again and again.

I liked this one as it was not such a common story, it had some twists and turns which keeps you quite invested. I enjoyed the different personalities of the characters. The main characters had so much chemistry and the attraction was always there. It was a great read for me and flowed through really well.

This story had a lot of twists and turns. The connection between the FMC & MMC was incredibly strong, I loved that Eden had a constant protector & that Rome was a constant in Eden’s life - especially when she needed it most.

This book was good, it felt like a quick read, everything went smoothly, and there wasn't a lot of angst, the only thing I didn't like was how at the beginning of the book, the FMC sounded like a naive child, but it got better slowly, I liked this book.
