I feel bad giving this book only two stars, as I feel like this had the potential to be a pretty good story. But that potential is the reason I also feel like I need to give it two stars instead of three or four. The plot, which might actually have been pretty solid, was too difficult to tease out from the morass of pointless, mundane minutiae that dominated the book, and the pertinent details lacked authenticity. I mean, what the heck is a "lieutenant captain" supposed to be? The dialogue was also too "on the nose" to be compelling, and there wasn't much to distinguish the voices of the various characters.

I will give the author the benefit of the doubt on the weird hyphen/space issue. That could very well be a CreateSpace glitch. And at first I was pleased with the relative lack of errors and typos. But then the apostrophe abuse started in, and it went downhill from there. In short, this book was sorely in need of the firm hand of a professional editor. I didn't hate this book, honest. I do hope Mr. Stepp continues writing, because it seemed like he had a lot to share about the Ohio locales featured here. But I think he (and his readers) will be happier with the end product if he at the very least lets his most critical writer friends have a crack at his next manuscript before he bundles it off to the publisher.

C. Martin Stepp is a new author and an awesome writer, he holds your attention, keeps you interested and makes you want to get to the end of page so you can read another. There is nothing better than a well written book that keeps you interested and wanting more and this tale of Hitchcock Brown does just that. It is well written, interesting and holds your attention from start to finish and I am so looking forward to more. I am hoping that it doesn't take to long to see another installment of this book that I am praying leads to a series of Hitchcock Brown adventures. If you like to read and enjoy a good book get yourself a copy of Walking Backwards by C. Martin Stepp, read it and enjoy, then you too will be looking forward to and waiting for more.
