Haruko Ichikawa
41 books152 followersHaruko Ichikawa (市川春子 in Japanese), born in 1980, is the author and artist of Land of the Lustrous (宝石の国, lit. "Country of Jewels"). She started her career in 2006 with the one-shot Mushi to Uta (虫と歌, lit. Insects and Songs). Between 2007 and 2011, she published seven one-shots in the manga magazine Afternoon, which were later compiled into two individual books named Ichikawa Haruko Sakuhinshuu (市川春子作品集, lit. Haruko Ichikawa Works Collection). She started writing Land of the Lustrous on October 25th, 2012, which currently has 10 volumes.
In 2010 she won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for works on Mushi to Uta. She has also contributed characters designs to the games Pokemon Sun & Moon and Pokemon Sword & Shield.

At some point, I started to wonder if my hatred of the gems was becoming unhealthy. If my brainstorming methods of torturing Cinnabar was leading me to read the manga wrong. Imagine my surprise when the very scenario I'd concocted came to pass, but with Phos as the victim. Ichikawa's always one step ahead of me. At this point, Phos is less of a person and more a mass of emotional states notable only for his continued capacity to experience pain and loss even after he's lost all coherent drives and goals. Suicide would be the most expedient solution both to his problems, and the strongest revenge he could take on those who've wronged him.

when you think of phos, there is a variety of identities to choose from. his being becomes fluid, in every volume, his existence is filled with one of the others. this series manipulates you, and it's not until the end that you realize- he holds the most humanity contradicting his appearance. one could say he manifests the most character development, but there is an argument to that opinion.
phos is, to put it blatantly, relatable. he doesn't fit in, tries his best to help, and fails each time. it's a repetitive cycle powered by the core motive to be liked, wanted, and feel worthy of living. this is obviously illustrated at the start of the series but thoroughly hidden in this arc. i like to think you get distracted by what the monstrosity phos has turned into, the visual of a machine of war in action. phos is powered by the hatred that he's been betrayed by his fellow brethren, but also because of the sudden drop he feels due to insecurity. he had invested so much for all of them but is quickly threatened to be turned into dust and thrown into the ocean. he realizes then, that he has been, and probably will mean nothing to them. he's useless, in fact, he projects himself on cinnabar, exclaiming about how they're using him and how he should die. and so, he kills him.
the invasion arc had me holding my breath most of the time. what shocked me, was the character motifs that phos had managed to sustain. he remains a stone wall, unable to reach and change this venom he holds into a "better" desire. one of the quotes that had shaken me, was his questioning of self. "the gems see me as lunarian, and the lunarians see me as a gem. what am i?" it now becomes this aggressive mess of feelings, that turns into, and will always turn into, the feeling of uselessness. so he presents enma (aechmea) with the proposal of setting them free.
what makes phos so fascinating in this arc, is his vulnerability. he demonstrates this perfectly by stating how adamant (sensei) should and will pray for him. his selfishness finally taking over, and what in fact makes him the new prayer machine. just like adamant, he begins to show similarities to those of humans. his figure, face shape, and mindset, slowly shift into a state of humanity. he's no longer living in paradise, unscathed by the problems surrounding him, but is suddenly drowning in the new reality that he created. the violent actions he commits are all powered by the desire to be needed and useful is frankly, what makes phos so human. it's what separates him from any other character that goes through development. he doesn't grow into something else, but is more unpeeled and skinned raw.
that's why phos is unique, because he remains the same and consistent throughout this manga, while surprising you in every chapter.

I hated it, I hate the way they treated phos from the beginning to the end. I feel shocked when I read the last panel - there's so much pain and misery for phos. May the next volume give phos some change of light. I really wish that everyone have a happy ending tho - because it's what phos want after he lost antarc.

Land of the lustrous is a story about what makes us human, with heavy and philosophical themes that it puts proudly on display from the very beginning, it doesn't shy away from its intentions and that makes it less popular amongst the average manga reader, not only that but its art style is very unconventional, it is monotone and the backgrounds are lacking in most panels, characters are difficult to identify sometimes and the Buddhist like figures are very different from the rest of the characters which creates a less than savory contrast. But that's the thing! That was the intention of the author all along, the eeriness of it all is intentional, and once you get into the story it becomes an enjoyable quirk rather than an inconvenience. Houseki no kuni, while being a manga in essence (and it greatly benefits from the medium to make the story more understandable), has more of a novel tinge to it, the best way I could describe it is it's a heart wrenching novel with a lot of pictures. It respects the intelligence of the reader and expects them to be able to understand the meanings without being told directly. Something that it doesn't share with the regular popular manga of these days. It was a memorable read and I'm very fond of it 5/5

Sé que todavía faltan como dos capítulos para completar el tomo, pero está claro que no llegarán pronto por el hiatus y que, con el material por el momento disponible, hay suficiente como para dedicarle una reseña.
Comenzando por el capítulo inicial, Ichikawa vuelve a la exposición. Se le perdona porque el resultado es excelente: conocemos más del mundo pre-Kongô, ampliamos el trasfondo de la gente selenita y, sobre todo, nos encontramos con un nuevo giro de guion: Aechmea es Enma/Yama, aquel que juzga las almas de los muertos en el budismo. Esto tiene un uso directo en los últimos capítulos, en que Phos descubre la sombra de Aechmea acechando todas sus acciones hasta la actualidad. De nuevo, la autora parece tratar la figura de Enma desde un punto de vista macabro: en lugar de juzgar las almas de los muertos, busca el dolor de Phos para completar su transformación en ser humano y, en lugar de juzgarlo, prolonga su sufrimiento diez mil años.
Mientras tanto, en la Tierra, continúa la invasión. Si los últimos capítulos ya habían sido desgarradores, Ichikawa no deja títere con cabeza en estos. Phos abriéndose paso hasta Sensei es, narrativamente, una estructura perfecta para demostrar su tenacidad. Todas las escenas muestran su nueva personalidad egoísta: primero ignora a Rutile, una gema que ha sufrido igual que Phos (perdiendo su salud mental en busca de un objetivo inalcanzable); después destruye a Jade, cuya preocupación por Phos llega al punto de disculparse por no haberle entendido. Phos tan solo busca amor, pero su nueva personalidad le impide darse cuenta de cómo está abandonando a su familia progresivamente. Cuando llega el enfrentamiento con Cinnabar, visualmente impresionante, la alegoría es clara. Es una batalla entre dos parias que, unidos por la necesidad de validación y la forma en que se ayudan mutuamente, se contraponen: Phos rechaza a su familia, sintiéndose invalidada por el mundo entero, y Cinnabar la acepta pese a que su validación pueda tener origen en la lástima. La lucha es rápida, triste y un colofón perfecto para este arco, marcando la desgarradora victoria de Phos. La escena en que Phos, habiendo olvidado a su antiguo yo, proyecta los recuerdos de Cinnabar, es la guinda sobre el pastel de tristeza: con todo lo sucedido, Cinnabar continuaba recordando a Phos como aquella gema despreocupada que tomó la decisión de ayudar a Cinnabar con su soledad. Y, sin embargo, este es el final que ambos personajes han recibido. La transformación de Phos en ser humano es brillante, con esa forma a medio camino entre la gema y el humano, entre el traje de su antiguo yo y la placenta del renacimiento.
Tras tanto dolor, llega un desenlace al arco incluso más intenso: inesperadamente, Kongô se rompe y Enma añade la gota que colma el vaso al sufrimiento de Phos. Mientras el resto de las gemas viven en paz con la gente selenita (si bien también abre un debate interesante sobre si la pérdida de identidad de una de las dos partes era el cierre más razonable para un conflicto milenario), Phos se sume en un sufrimiento de diez mil años. Sabiendo que, gracias a la influencia de Lapis, Phos ahora tiene total consciencia del paso del tiempo, no me imagino cómo saldrá tras semejante lapso. Más aún si tenemos en cuenta lo que 220 años provocaron en su mente quebrada. Ichikawa parece dispuesta a todo para destruir a su protagonista y estoy muy dentro de este barco(de Teseo). Que el hiatus lleve ya prolongándose 330 días me hace sospechar de la espectacular maniobra por parte de la autora: hacer que el lector sufra una pequeña porción del tiempo de espera de Phos para reforzar la empatía por un personaje que, al final, no es sino víctima de las circunstancias, de tendencias depresivas y cuyas decisiones no son enteramente culpa suya.
Como siempre en esta serie, no sé qué puede suceder en los próximos capítulos. Con lo que hay ahora mismo, Houseki no Kuni ya se ha convertido en uno de mis mangas favoritos. Qué personajes, qué narrativa, qué ambientación y cuánto sufrimiento. Espero que el final sea, por lo menos, bonito; bastante ha sufrido ya Phos como para continuar así. Si de verdad termina en el capítulo 108 (por ser el símbolo numérico budista por excelencia), creo que Ichikawa va a tener tiempo de sobra para rematar la serie con un broche de oro.

Probably the most compelling volume in the entire series. The story’s pacing made the progression to unveiling the truth relentless and exceptional. Till the very last panel the reader hopes for a dignifying ending to Phos’ story arc. I won’t say I didn’t see this miserable fate for them coming: with Aechmea’s plan unfolding (or should i say Enma, at this point?) it’s clear how their twelve-volumes-long discovery of truth and subsequent thirst for revenge brought to such a bitter conclusion.
I think Enma’s intentions had always been quite coherent (comprehensible and legitimate, to an extent, since his unbiased aim was the Lunarians’ salvation), making the character not as grey and complex as Phos’, whom Ichikawa Haruko has made such an enthralling work creating.
I really don’t think that the protagonist’s decisions were entirely corrupted by Lapis’ influence if not channeled by: hasn’t Phos always been determined to seek the truth? haven’t they been questioning since the very beginning Vajra’s role? to assume everything was caused by external influences would take away from the character’s personal journey. Lapis has surely channeled Phos’ potential: a permanent desire to subvert a system in which they felt unnecessary and unpleasant; often Phos’ frustration takes over, blurring their judgment.
I wonder what the future holds for Phos from now on: whether they’ll commit suicide, as an ultimate act of rebellion against those who wronged them, confining Lunarians in an eternal abeyance, or not. And if that is the case, what path will they choose?
I found the overall story so incredibly weaved, enriched by high philosophical subjects and literary innuendos; I just hope for it to continue in the same spirit. Meanwhile, I’ll watch the anime series and revisit the astonishing world created by Ichikawa.

I don't know what possessed me to read this book and watch Uncut Gems on the same day. But I did. This is the world I now have to live in. I dunno. I guess all this time watching a protagonist's frustrations, trials, mistakes, and the petty cruelties of their life, we were just waiting them get to a place where they were ready to receive oblivion.
And there's something beautiful in that.

Pasó todo tan rápido. Ningún personaje llega a un desarrollo satisfactorio y todos parecen ser tan mezquinos. ¿Qué diablos les pasa? Pero la construcción de mundo fue tan buena, todo tenía tanto sentido. Pero unos capítulos más Ichikawa, unos cuantos más. Bort y Día no concluyeron nada, la crisis de Yellow quedó en nada, el vínculo de Cinnabar y Phos no pareció importar. Los admirabilis fueron casi completamente dejados de lado. Y también... Cuál era el punto de convertir a todos en seres de la luna incluído el sensei? No lo entiendo, siento que la autora se encaprichó con hacer sufrir a su protagonista gratuitamente. Estoy tan contrariado

c'est tellement devenu mon nouveau manga pref 😭 dsl c'est juste un chef d'oeuvre, le dernier chapitre étant sortit en avril, je vais attendre la sortie papier en france pour découvrir la fin!
mais que de plot twists ?? l'évolution de phos ça m'a juste brisé le coeur (il est hideusement humain).
vraiment j'adore, je deguste c'est tellement un poulet chaque perso est attachant tout en ayant son propre caractère bien distinct, c'est si touchant.
j'ai peur de voir la fin honnêtement

Wow.
That was my very first reaction right after the first few pages. Houseki no Kuni never disappoints.
This is such a deep and philosophical piece I need a whole week to process it properly. The whole series is built around the concept of humans and humanity and leave alone that is highly philosophical. I personally am in love with the act of being human and this volume specifically tickled the right corners in my brain.
//CONTENT SPOILER WARNING//
I wasn't ready for Cinnabar's and Phos' fight. This was gut wrenching. Thinking of volume 1 Phos as Cinnabar thanked them in the end and Phos forgetting their promise to them ripped out my heart. I loved the combination of those two and I was somehow praying for Cinnabar to end up okay (which technically is true in the end), but I guess they were prone to face each other in war.
Phos turning into a praying machine, or better a human was something that made me put down the volume for a second. I had to let that sit. The waking up on a meadow in an awesome loop, I wanted to hold my breath.
Also the backstory arc of Aechmea or Enma now was something else. I wasn't a big fan of Aechmea in the beginning and I gotta say I still ain't convinced, but with this piece of backstory I had to accept him. He is a good guy.
Now my favourite part: the original praying machine. I was super curious about the ice and all the stuff that has happened with it, because it never really got explained. I love the detail add on of the original prayer. ALSO the side story with Kongo-Sensei's mom??? I am melting.
I love this story more and more with every panel I consume. I'd give this 6 stars if I could. This volume especially has a special place in my heart now.

«Aquellos como tú... pueden romperse con el más mínimo toque. ¿Verdad, patético 2?».
No grites no grites no grites no grites *se muerde el puño para no gritar*
Han sido muy épicas las batallas que ha tenido Phos con Euclase (si acaso eso se le puede llamar batalla jaja), Jade y sobre todo con Cinnabar, aunque me dolía tanto que estuvieran luchando, se suponía que no tenía que ser así cómo tenía que terminar su promesa lpm. Me parece tan egoísta el comportamiento de Cinnabar, porque sí, ahora es feliz y está acompañado, y es cierto que le agradece a Phos por su promesa porque es consciente de que ha llegado a ser feliz a costa suya, pero que nunca le tienda una mano para ayudarlo simplemente me destroza. Phos dio todo por ayudar a Cinnabar y a todos y ha sido abandonado como si no importase, aunque pensándolo bien, Phos fue abandonado desde el principio, todos lo marginaban hasta que se hizo "útil" y fuerte.
Me ha dado mucha rabia el hecho de que dejasen a Phos solo durante DIEZ MIL AÑOS mientras los demás estaban de fiesta todo el tiempo en la Luna (y que estén Cairngorm, Antarc y Cinnabar juntos parece una broma de muy mal gusto porque ahí también debería de haber estado Phos). Ni siquiera los más amables, como Euclase, Diamond o el propio sensei hicieron nada por evitarlo. Quiero decir, entiendo que es arriesgado interferir, pero tenían diez mil años para buscar un plan que por lo menos sea menos cruel para Phos, pero no, porque ellos eran felices y Phos es poco importante, ¿verdad? Supongo que es un dilema filosófico en el que se plantea que es mejor que sufra uno por el bien de todos.
Son tan hipócritas, estoy resentida con todos, pero especialmente con Cinnabar porque se suponía que Phos le hizo una promesa con toda la buena intención del mundo, siempre pensaba en buscarle un trabajo cuando se metía en problemas y todo para que finalmente se ponga en su contra y lo abandone como los demás.
En fin que los odio a todos, son detestables. Nadie se merece a Phos. Me pregunto cómo va a continuar la historia de aquí en adelante, porque ahora desde luego ha cambiado todo.
Phos reza para los demás, pero ¿quién le va a rezar a Phos?

A while back I saw a TikTok edit for an anime with a unique art style I’d never seen before so I decided to watch it. I binged the anime and then decided to read the manga too, I truly didn’t know what I was getting into. I never expected this manga to impact me so deeply. It covers themes of death and life in a unique way I’ve never read anything like it. The character development is excellent, beautiful in the case of Cinnabar, and tragic with Phosphophyllite. The art style is completely unique, unlike any other manga I’ve read. I’ve read hundreds of manga and seen many art styles that feel as though they were made for black and white, but this artist, it feels like black and white were made for these drawings.
I wish I had the writing skills to praise this series appropriately but all I can manage to do is list some impactful topics it covers: life and death, selfishness and sacrifice, love and hate, sense of duty, lack of purpose, jealousy and insecurity, resentment, and so much more. I will never forget this manga and will be recommending it to all manga readers I meet.

The story is about an individual who is perceived by others as a liability. It is weak, but passionate. As the story progresses and reaches its conclusion in this volume, we see how our character changes as it quests to solve the mystery of this mythical world. Once it achieves that, it will realize that it was used by others. The characters are genderless, leaving it to the readers to deduce if they are more masculine or feminine from their behavior and outfit. It talks about immortality and what the self means. This is evident with the growth of our character
I did not like how the story addressed the argument of God. It feels like it represents it as the evil force in the world, invented by humans to help them escape from the void of immortality.

Damn godhood and the inherent pain that accompanies it. I LOVE AND HATE STORIES LIKE THIS. The complex relationship between the characters and their quest for understanding and purpose. TEN THOUSAND YEARS! I never wanted to kill myself so fast. The weight of ultimate power or enlightenment and the profound suffering and isolation that comes with it. Also the intense personal sacrifice, especially Phos, and inner turmoil, deepening his struggles and highlighting the painful nature of self-discovery and transformation. MY GOD I AM CRYING SO HARD. I hated everyone else! Phos became the sacrificial lamb and all they really did is have thousands of years of happiness!

Incredible! Very emotional and definitely climactic. I thought this was the last one in the series, but I am glad to see there is one more coming at the end of the year. This manga always gets me together.
