Jealousy is a wicked bitch, especially in the polyamorous world. Bianca Castillo enjoys sex with her men Jamison and Adrian, but they have their own primary partners, and she's often left knowing she's second best. Bianca herself never really desired her own primary, but when she meets Bishop Farrington, part of her starts to wish for more. Bishop has his own wife in Japan…she's okay with his flings, and he loves her fiercely, but she can't give him everything he needs. All of these lovers are searching for something, but will they ever find that unicorn they're searching for?

I've had mixed experiences with Ms. Harte's writing, some I absolutely adored, and some I had to put on my DNF list. This one had elements that I loved (the poly lifestyle) with elements I loathe (adolescent role playing). There's a lot of players in this book, and if you're not familiar with how polyamory works, you may find yourself out of your depth on this story. It was very emotional, lots of drama and jealousy, which didn't do much for me this time. My biggest personal issue with LOVERS was Toby. She and Adrian were into adolescent role playing, with her being the boy. Lines like "You want me to suck your dick, little boy?" and "Are you going to get hard for me, little boy?" I can appreciate non-gender conforming sex, but the whole kiddie thing (even though everyone is far more than legal) is something I can't stomach. That said, I did somewhat enjoy every other relationship dynamic. Overall, this wasn't my cuppa, but it certainly was interesting.

Bottom Line: Lots of OM/OW and sharing; MF, MM, FF, MMF and MFF sex; some condom use; lots of BDSM/kink/role playing/ropes; questionable sexual assault; no violence/murder.

I enjoyed this book, but not nearly as much as I enjoyed Ms. Harte's Chronicles of Surrender Series (Sacred Secrets and following). The characters in this book were realistic and certainly came from a wide range of sexual preferences and interests, but I never felt deeply connected to them and found their choices generally unpredictable or inexplicable.

I love the effort to explore the reality of alternative relationships and the emotional rollercoaster involved in creating and maintaining complicated relationships. But I wanted more from this book. I wanted the characters to think more about their choices. For example, one of the male leads moves out from his wife's house, leaving behind three young sons, to live with his girlfriend. Then, he moves back. Then he leaves the wife. These difficult moves seemed to be made quite impulsively with little introspection, which left this reader feeling quite disconnected from the character.

Similarly, Toby, a very interesting character was introduced with all of her complicated confusion as to her sexual identity and her rejection of all labels. Then, she was almost inexplicably and suddenly written out of the lives of the main characters. So much more could have been done with this character.

Overall, the book felt rushed or unfinished somehow. Maybe the author intends to start a new series, but this didn't quite pull together as a standalone book.

Complaints aside, I'll definitely read more by this author.
