Crown and Serpent

All she wanted . . .

Seventeen-year-old Iris Winn loves her quiet life with her father, studying the poisons that fascinate them both. But after his sudden death, Iris is now the ward of her estranged aunt and uncle. In order to claim her inheritance, she must live in the capital city of Lenzen for one year. While there, she must attend parties, balls, and participate in every other vapid thing the elite of Ryden value. Iris doesn’t care about learning their rules or joining their ranks–her only goal is to endure the next year. Then she meets Prince Henri Kaelin.

Everything they demanded . . .

Every young woman in Lenzen wants Henri–except for Iris. Unfortunately, the prince only has eyes for her. The king has decreed that Henri must choose a bride before his birthday, and Iris is determined it won’t be her. Dodging a prince’s focused attention while placating her relatives and the rest of Ryden’s high society is exhausting–and more dangerous than Iris could have ever imagined. She is about to learn that not all games are innocent, and some smiles are more lethal than poison. Luckily, Iris is a quick study, and this is a game she is determined to win.

She would take it all.

*Crown & Serpent is a Fate of Eyrinthia prequel novella that’s actually the length of a novel. This villain origin story was released after Royal Rebel, but it can be read at any point in the series.*

The Fate of Eyrinthia series is one of my favorite romantasies, and I was super excited, and a little apprehensive, to read Iris and Henri’s backstories in Crown & Serpent. I don’t know why I was worried. Frost always knocks it out of the park with her stories, and this novella is no exception.

Iris and Henri are both such reprehensible villains, rulers, and parents in the series, and I wondered what made them so cruel, especially when dealing with their children. And though I was determined to hate them out of loyalty to Grayson, (their son and one of my favorite characters in the series), I found myself totally invested in their stories. I don’t know how Frost does it, but she managed to make me sympathize with these villains and understand them a little better.

The more I read by Frost, the more impressed I am with her ability to tell a story. I love her writing style and always feel immediately and wholly immersed in the book. In this series, Queen Iris is a master of poisons, and she often uses her knowledge to test her children. I despised her character until I read this novella. And though I still think she’s one scary antagonist, learning about her life and some of her heartbreaks before becoming queen definitely changed my perception of her.

And Henri! Ooof, I REALLY hate him, but… Frost got me to swoon over him in this story. Like his wife, King Henri is a monster, and the abuse he inflicts on his children is awful. But a young and shirtless Prince Henri? Swoon! After the swoon, though, I had to check myself. lol That’s the skill of the author. She created layered and nuanced characters, their good and their bad, their heartbreak and their successes, and their love story and family issues. These backstories shed light on the circumstances that led to their villainous ways.

A masterfully written villain origin story, Crown & Serpent is exciting and immersive and connects so perfectly to the rest of the series. That being said, you could read this as a standalone too. Special thanks to Heather Frost for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

wow…..
where do I even begin
well I’ve been staring at a wall for a while so that should tell you how I feel lol

if I needed to describe this book in one word I’d choose….goosebumps

like the I’m terrified because reality is making sense now “goosebumps”

This book follows seventeen year old Iris and how she managed to catch the attention of Prince Henri.

Man it was weird reading Prince Henri instead of King Henri

Also I found the fact that I was attracted to him absolutely appalling. EVIL PEOPLE SHOULDNT BE HOT!

“His prowling gate was strangely lethal”
THATS HOW HEATHER DESCRIBED HIM WALKING FLIPPIN SHIRTLESS…YES SHIRTLESS WITH BROAD SHOULDERS MUSCLES GALORE AND GLORIOUS SINEWY FLESH AND ALL TOWARDS IRIS

It’s so crazy to read about them when they were younger bc I can LITERALLY point out attributes that their sons share with them

IE: Henris intense stare
LITERALLY GRAYSON AND TYRELL
remember that one scene in Royal Rebel when they were waiting for Mia to unlock the door to Graysons chambers and they were just staring at her? yea Henri is the master of the unnerving stare. Like even MY heart was racing.

You also learn why Iris is the way she is…it’s tragic. I do feel bad for her after reading this but still throughout the book you will see glimpses of the Iris we all hate in the later years…
ie: her intense hatred for art….that’s all I’ll say

She didn’t deserve the treatment she received from her own family or the nobles of Lenzen

Reading Henri and Iris kiss was….I felt so weird omg
Goosebumps
Liam wasn’t kidding when he said their story would give you nightmares

You know what I also learned?

Iris is very much in control. Henri can think all he wants that he has all the power, but he should think again because his biggest opponent is sleeping in his very bed.
That woman scares me
A man may be the head, but the woman is the neck that moves the head…

I feel like we’ll see in later books just how powerful she actually is and I’m very excited for that

Heather, you did a phenomenal job on this one. I’m telling you girl some things both her and Henri said I can pinpoint exactly when one of their children said something exactly like it. They’re monsters and this book made me feel pain for their children and the life they had to endure all because of how they chose to raise them. Not to be loved but to be effective and feared monsters.

I received an ARC of this book and all opinions are my own. I think this is the best novella yet!! I’m BURNING for more! Read Royal Rebel if you haven’t already!!

I am always eager to read of book of Heather Frost’s but I was a bit nervous this time. Iris and Henri scare me to death but fascinate me at the same time. Crown & Serpent was enthralling and captured me right from the start. The story mostly focuses on Iris and her backstory but you also get glimpses of the parents her and Henri will become to the Kaelin siblings. Henri was captivated by Iris right from their first meeting. This book is a novella released after ROYAL REBEL that can be read if you aren’t caught up in the story. There were some details in Crown & Serpent that I appreciated from reading the Eyrinthia series. I read this in one day because I had to know how it turned out. Get ready! You are in for a wild, entertainingly spooky ride.

An intriguing and captivating prequel story for the Fate of Eyrinthia series. This is the fascinating and tragic story of King (then Prince) Henry and his wife Iris. It tells of the progression of their relationship. Readers will be spellbound with this amazing story as they better come to understand Prince Henry and Iris’ back story and get little glimpses of how horrible and wicked they will become in the other books in the series. Whether you have read the other books in the series or are just beginning this story will cause readers to continue in the series or start a re-read. Another wonderfully written and enthralling story that readers will not want to put down.

Crown and Serpent is a prequel novella in the Fate of Eyrinthia Series. This series has been so good. When I heard what this novella was about I was so intrigued. This time we get to read the story of the evil King Henri and his equally evil wife Queen Iris.

The biggest surprise for readers is finding out at their first meeting neither of them was seriously heinous. Experiences in their lives eventually headed them in that direction. I actually was charmed by both of them and loved their witty banter. This is not to say I like them and they're horrible at what they do in the other novels. But I had a new understanding of how life sometimes shapes us in ways that we have no control over.

This novella must be read by all Fate of Eyrinthia fans. Getting this insight into the character's early lives made me look at many things differently. This novella is not a happy one, and there are some deaths by poison but it was another great read by Heather Frost.

Who would have thought I would enjoy a villain origin story so much? Is it somewhat dark? Yes. Disturbing? A bit. But I was too intrigued not to take the risk, and I’m so glad I did. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have met Kell. And he is certainly worth meeting.

The story centers around Iris Winn, an unusual girl with a love of poisons who is unlucky enough to catch the attention of Crown Prince Henri during his search for a proper bride. Are the fates intervening on her behalf or must she run away before she’s entangled in matters outside her control?

I was utterly fascinated by the tale the author weaved—with lots of court intrigue and a peculiar romance at the center of it all. The central characters in this novella are fully realized, adding nuance to already fascinating and pivotal characters in the main Fates of Eyrinthia series. I’m glad I didn’t skip this, as it gives added insight into the whys of Ryden’s royalty.

Overall, a fascinating and riveting story, centered around trauma and family ties—with a big dollop of heartbreak.

Content: Fantasy violence, death, torture. Mentions of suicide and murder. No spice (though there is kissing and one delicately handled scene of attempted assault). No strong language.

How on earth do I review this!?! I have never had to review an amazing book about two people that I LOATHE, but alas, Heather Frost has done it again!! Seriously though, how did my other friends compare it… It was like watching a train wreck happen in slow motion, and then the train caught on fire and then all of the people burned, trapped inside, but it was awesome! See how twisted it all is? But I seriously loved the book so much! It was so interesting to see Iris and Henry’s descent into madness and mayhem. They are two of the worst characters I have ever had the pleasure (see, this is just wrong) of reading. But I was totally hooked from the very first paragraph in the book. Go ahead, just go read it, you will want to keep reading because you want to know what in the world is going on! Iris is a strange one for sure. But I “liked” her character (and when I say liked, I mean I liked seeing how she became the horrible person she is). Henry seemed like a good(ish) guy in the beginning, but then this thing happened, and I can’t tell you what happened, but he morphed, into this crazy person. I guess love makes you do some really strange things. Their relationship is one for the evil fairy tale books for sure.

Just go read the series. You will be so disgusted with these two, but then you will be so intrigued that you will want to read their story. Trust me, you will be questioning your sanity. I did. But it was so worth it. Loved it! (Loathe them).

*I received a copy of this book as an ARC reviewer, but a positive review wasn’t required. All thoughts are solely what I personally thought of this beautiful book.❤️❤️❤️

Heather Frost is such an incredible Author, and I have loved every book she has published! if that's enough to convince you to pick up one of her books, great! If you still need more convincing, read on!

Crown and Serpent Review--
Have you ever wondered what makes your favorite villain tick? What traumatic experiences and heartaches lurk in their pasts? I know I have! Crown and Serpent gives us an in depth look into one of the scariest villains I have ever encountered, Iris Kaelin, aka the Poison Queen. This book is a prequel to the series Fate of Eyrinthia and can be read at any point in the series.
This Novella is such an entertaining read! I had a hard time putting it down and spent several nights trading sleep for a few more chapters! Iris is such an interesting young woman and is very intelligent. Being raised by her father in a remote country manner, she lacks many social skills, but that doesn’t stop her from accidentally snagging the attention of the Crown Prince of Riden. During her upbringing, she helped her father with his passion for learning all he could about the poisons of Eyrinthia. Over time that passion transferred to Iris, and she found purpose in studying poisons, and ways to use them.
Iris’s no nonsense approach to life and her lack of interest in social standings makes her stand out in the crowd of nobility, which interests Prince Henri all the more. As plots against her begin to unravel, we see Iris learning the rules of the deadly game of social standings. She quickly learns she cannot trust a smiling face, but she will not allow anyone the power to hurt her without consequence. Iris uses her poisons to inflict her own acts of revenge against those who have wronged her and is pleased when people begin to fear her. When the Prince offers her his hand, she doesn’t accept out of love or interest in romance, but for the power to protect herself. She vows to love no one, not her husband, or even her own future children. No one will have the power to hurt the Queen of Poison.

This is the story you didn’t know you needed.

I mean, it’s largely accepted in the Eyrinthia world that Henri and Iris Kaelin are the spawns of Satan. So who would have guessed Crown & Serpent, the story of how they came together, is actually a great read and you’re cheering them on?

You read that right… cheering them on!

This story was a serious test of mental gymnastics and cognitive dissonance. Henri and Iris are some seriously dangerous and scary players in Eyrinthia. I wouldn’t want to be caught alone with either, if you know what I mean! Yet I loved reading this story!

Iris was a complete loner, no shock there. And there were so many instances that I just felt for her. Her father passed away, she’s forced into a new environment with petty woman who treat her poorly. She’s a total fish out of water, and I felt genuine empathy for her. And this is the character that poisons her children on the regular!!!

I even had moments of empathy for Henri. Growing up in the shadow of his deceased brother certainly messed with his head. Knowing he could never please his father regardless of what he did also shaped him.

And watching them together… I was shipping them hard! Henri was completely smitten with Iris. And Iris was with Henri, but she also held herself back, not wanting to grow to attached to any one again. Mind boggling since these two are evil!

But they didn’t start that way. Not fully. They built each other and their wicked ways up. They encouraged each other so they could reach their end goal of taking over all of Eyrinthia.

And that’s what I love about Ms Frost’s work!!! She takes two characters that are despised, and makes you love them!!! She also painted such a rich and beautiful Ryden. One we don’t see in the main novels. And one, I hope can eventually be restored!

Anyways, pick up this book if you love Eyrinthia. You won’t regret it!

What if you end up rooting for a villain—or two—and feel guilty for somehow betraying the hero you love? Forgive me, Grayson, your parents are the absolute worst, and yet their ‘Once Upon a Time’ made so much sense that I swooned over your father and sympathised with your mother. Thanks, Heather Frost, I may never recover . . .

In this prequel novella to the gripping Fate of Eyrinthia series, it is revealed how two of the most terrifying characters ever, Henri Kaelin and Iris Winn, met and how both of their pasts influenced what they became. Knowing the insane and evil people they are now and everything they have done and continue to do, it should be impossible to even think of sympathising with them. However, when one learns all that Iris has faced since her childhood and gets to know the people around her, it is hard for the reader not to feel something for her and, in the process, doubt their own sanity. Indeed, your mind is like a whirlwind of emotions so twisted that at some point you may no longer be able to distinguish who is good and who is really bad . . . I even wondered if I was the evil one, but not because of Henry’s stare, nor his grin, nor everything in between, no, that would be absurd . . . I need to learn how to make poisons help!

Frost has masterfully written a villain original story that offers food for thought and perfectly connects everything to the events of the main story, providing strong and contrasting emotions that will poison your mind . . .

I received a free copy of this book from the Author for an honest review. This does not affect in any way my opinion of the book nor the content of my revieworiginally posted on Darkest Sins.

Oh. my. lanta.

Where do I even start?! I have never read a book like this in my life! The prequel story for not one, but two villains from a series? It was absolutely fascinating to watch their descent into evil because make no mistake, Iris and Henri are legit some of the most terrifying villains I have ever seen on page!

All Iris really wants is to be left alone. But after her father's death, her uncle forces her to come live with them for a year. Just one year and she can return home to her books and her studies on poison.

But after an encounter with the prince - who has two months to select a bride - the course of her future starts to shift and when a treacherous scheme against her is uncovered, she resolves to never be weak again. Ever.

What to expect:
Fantasy romance
Prequel to a series
Villain origin story
Sweet romance
Mystery/suspense
Poison. Lots of poison

I still think their characters are horrible people but I was surprised that one, I really wanted Henri to win Iris over despite knowing what they would become together (I am truly a hopeless romantic!) and that two, I felt bad for Iris. She was odd and eccentric but it was the actions of others that led her down the other path.

If you are a fan of this series, you definitely need to pick this one up! It offers so much insight into these fates blasted characters and what shaped them. Still don't like them, but now I understand them so much better!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

I am always impressed by Frost's ability to create such deep characters with incredibly detailed back stories.

Queen Iris has always been a very intriguing character, but until now, she has spent most of her time in the background of the Fate of Eyrinthia series. From the first book in the series, Royal Decoy, I have wondered what would cause a woman to treat her children the way Iris does. I have also always wondered about the nature of Henri and Iris's relationship - Do they love each other, or are they only using each other? This novella answered all of these questions and so many more.

I'm never quite sure how to feel about villain origin stories. It makes me uncomfortable when I actually start liking the person that I know I will despise later. But this novella had me feeling heartbroken for Iris and rooting for Henri. I didn't like it, but i also loved it because the story was so good! As the novekla goes on though, we start to see how they became the people that we all know and hate from the rest of the series.

It's very impressive when an author can so flawlessly intertwine the villain's origin into the detailed story that has already been told, but Frost has done it.

This novella held the same amount of intrigue, excitement, and depth that I have come to expect from the Fate of Eyrinthia series and adds new insight to this magnificent story Frost is creating.

Here it is! The backstory for King Henri (booooo) and Queen Iris (booooo) who are the most evil, horrible, awful, terrible villains in a series that I absolutely love. I was equally terrified and excited heading into this story and rightly so. (Yikes! Haha.) But how can you turn down a chance at a glimpse into how these two people not only came together but came to reign with such terror and evil? I couldn't. Ugh. It was SO, SO good.

This author does such a good job at weaving this backstory for Henri (booooo) and Iris (booooo) that is so believable. You can see the events that triggered them and shaped into warped things in their minds. It's like a train wreck you can't look away from. And can I just say something here? Poisons are SCARY!!

I was surprised at a few things and caught off guard with others. In the end, I was completely satisfied and felt justified with my hatred for Henri (booooo) and Iris (booooo). I'm not giving away more details because I want you to experience this for yourself. If you haven't started this series, what are you waiting for?!?! It's seriously one of my very favorites.

Content: peril, violence, death. Kissing.

Brilliant!
Wow - I am so impressed by Heather Frost. I wasn’t sure what to expect but this book was amazing. I have always hated Henry and Iris from the main books in this series but have wondered what made them tick in such a horrible way. How could they be so horrible to their children? So many questions. This story is brilliant. These people that I have hated had some redeeming qualities or Heathers story telling power made me feel sorry for them and at times even cheer for them. Don’t get me wrong - they are still not my favorite people and they do horrific things to their children but I feel like I better understand them and the motivation behind their actions so much more. I still shake my head and wonder how they can do such things but read it for yourself.
Definitely a must read! I enjoyed that I had read the rest of the series first because it was fun to have such a strong hatred for them and see it shift here and there while reading this book but I am sure you can ready it in any order. Well done Heather Frost!

Clean, no profanity and totally awesome. This entire series is excellent.

Heather never ceases to amaze me in her writing skills. Only she could get me to swoon over the evil, Henri Kaelin. I mean, I’m reading it and I’m like, oh wait, this is Grayson’s dad…ew! I wasn’t sure if I’d like the story since it’s the villain’s story, but I actually did! I totally get where they’re coming from now, but it doesn’t make me hate them any less in the overall series. That’s a hard thing to accomplish and I appreciate Heather’s ability to reach that end in this book. I mean, I don’t know how she did it, but she did! Incredible!

I was totally getting Little Women vibes with the whole high society culture and the focus on getting a husband. Also, Jane Austin’s Emma with the matchmaking and the shy girl…so fun!

Crown and Serpent is a great standalone book if you haven’t read the Fate of Eryinthia series, and provides so much history and depth to characters in the series if you have. Totally recommend!!

I was given an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

This is not a romcom folks. I love romcoms, but this is a medievally fantasy? And it’s a prequel novella. To a series I haven’t read yet. This is also a “villain origin story.” Villain folks.

I’m a huge fan of another book by @heather.frost.author so I knew it would be good. And it was the most crazy read ever.

Iris loses her parents and strikes a bargain to live with family she barely knows for a year to claim her inheritance. Henri is the prince who wants to win Iris for his own. Add the fact that Iris is a poison master and pretty much every other page is a gasp. No really. I gasped.

It was awesome. I rooted for the couple. And then I would squish my eyebrows up like wait. What? Then I loved Kell. And then my mouth would squish like huh? And then there is poison. And I’d question the dust in my house. And then there is power. And a character arc that clearly convinced me I need the first book in the series pronto. I received a complimentary copy of this book and these are my own thoughts.

Iris and Henri, the couple that is easy to hate. In the "Fate of Eyrinthia" series I have wondered how two despicable people get together and raise their sons.

All my questions were answered and more. The problem was that I didn't hate them in the novella. I came to understand who they were and why they made the decisions they did. I actually sympathized with Iris in most of the novella. I actually felt sorry for her. It was actually easy to see her path to the amazingly evil person she would become. But, she didn't start out that way. She started as a young woman who loved her father and spent time with him studying poisons.

Henri was just a prince who hated his father and wanted the throne. Together, they bounced ideas around that would define their rule during the series.

If you love the series, you want, no need, to read this one. It explains so much!

Possible slight spoiler alert for this review, so just be aware...

I have to admit, when I started this book, I was kind of hesitant, because I really didn't want to feel bad for Iris, or find out that she is the way she is because of how she was treated as a child. She is completely psychotic, and I didn't want my feelings for her to change.

Well, I'm happy to say that my feelings are still the same. She is still the same ruthless, evil person we love to hate. But I did enjoy getting to know her back story.

And I was, in a little way, rooting for things to go her way. (In the beginning.) But that would have completely changed this entire series, and we can't have that, because this series is excellent!

So, if you love to hate Iris and Henri like I do, don't be afraid to read this book. It is just as captivating as all the other books in the series, and the author does a great job at bringing all of the characters to life, even the minor ones.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on the ARC of this novella! I was so curious to see what made King Henri and Queen Iris so evil. Was evil inside them already? Or if they just brought out the worst in each other. Until reading this novella I had nothing but distain for both of these characters. They were pure evil! So I was very surprised when I found myself actually rooting for their budding romance even though I knew what kind of parents and rulers they would become in the future! Another page turner! I couldn't put it down! Frost continues to amaze with this awesome series! This novella can be read on it own as there is enough backstory here. But I do suggest that you start with the first novel in the series Royal Decoy and read the series in order to get the full impact. I'm so looking forward to the next chapter in the Fate of Eyrinthia! You know it's a good series when you finish one chapter and can't wait for the next one!

I think everyone was both intrigued and nervous to read this one. I was, anyway. Loving Eyrinthia as I do, the idea of finding out the backstory of two of the deadliest villians in the series was like a plot twist. I think it was a courageous step for the author; I can't believe that it was easy to make the ruthless Kaelin couple human enough to let us see how they justify themselves. But Heather Frost did it again and created a wonderful story full of action, depth, humor, and love. Wow! Grayson Kaelin is my favorite character in the main series, and see his parents grow up - learning how they made the choices they did, was fascinating. I felt on the verge of tears the whole time. So much emotion in seeing Henri Kaelin hate his father, but take the same path in manipulating his own sons later, and seeing a mother deliberately choose to be void of love for her children. Loved this book!

I was hesitant about the concept of crown and serpent because I didn’t want to feel bad for a villain quite as evil as Iris.
Rest assured I do not.
This novella is a spectacular model of how to write a villain orgin story. Iris is an engaging character, and understandable character, but rarely a likeable one - a feat few authors are successful in attempting. I very much enjoyed watching the progression Iris made from a practical, opinionated young woman who had little opportunity to make connections as a child into a ruthless, powerful, ambitious Queen. Every step of the way was written with calculation and a strong understanding of human nature.
I particularly loved the relationship between Iris and Kell as it proved an excellent foil for her relationship with Henri.

I love every single book and novella in this series, and Crown & Serpent is now my favourite ... because it is supervillain Queen Iris's prequel origin story... I love an interesting backstory, and this was was amazing!

I wanted to interview none other than Queen Iris herself this time, but she wouldn't grant me an audience... Heather did get to speak with her, and I eavesdropped... what a conversation that was! I breathed a sigh of relief when Heather returned safe from that interview... Here's what transpired...

Was a fast read for me. It did not peak my attention enough to want to pick up the rest of the Fate of Eyrinthia Novels. Although what held my interest was watching it unfold the beginnings of a cruel queen. I loved reading about how she became what she was by the end of the book. The romance part of this book was very bland and the prince had no memorable qualities about him. And a little spoiler, she never lets herself love him/She is incapable of loving anyone.

As a stand alone it was a different kind of novel that I wanted to love, I feel my rating may have been a little higher had I already been familiar with the series. So i would say don't start with this one.

Wow, wow, wow!!

I'm not usually one to like prequels, but this book was absolutely fantastic! I think I might have liked it more than the first books. I feel like I need to go back and read the first set of books again to really place the characters in my mind in this new light. I highly recommend this book. It was exciting, thorough, and surprising. I usually root for the good guy, but the author gives you an enlightening appreciation for the "enemy." I can't wait to read the next book in this series with all this new info in the back of my mind.

I just knew I was going to end up loving a book about characters I absolutely detest! I was not not going to read this origin story because everything Heather has written has been amazing for me. How do you feel pity and disgust at the same time for these people?? How?! It was insane to me. If you have not picked up this series you really should! I’ve loved this world and I’m so glad there is more yet to come!

If you love Heather Frost's Fate of Eyrinthia series, then you HAVE to read this! Iris and Henri's backstory was so interesting, gives you a better understanding of how these characters came to be the way they are, and is very well written, but I will warn you, it is SO weird reading about characters you absolutely can't stand! Henri and Iris are the worst villains ever and yet, I couldn't put this book down, Heather's writing is just THAT good!

This was great. I can’t really say I liked the main characters, but it does explain so much from the series. I have loved this series. Heather does an amazing job with character and character development. So many times I wanted to punch Henri or give Iris a lecture. They had many plans for their future and for the future of their kingdom. I enjoyed the story but could not believe how evil they were- and how much they don’t seem to care about others. Wonderful book- great series.

5 ⭐️ I absolutely loved getting to see Iris's villian origin story. The plot twists were really good and this book just made me love her character so much more. I also really liked Zev's character and seeing Henri fall head over heels in love with Iris. It was so interesting to see how she became so obsessed with power and wanted a strong family. But I will still never forgive her for what she put her sons through.

I used to think that the novellas were just “extra” reads that I would pick up if I had time. After reading this one, I would say the novellas are a MUST read! This book adds so much insight to Iris and Henry and makes me even more excited to read future books to see where these characters end up. Heather Frost has amazing talent and I hope you take the time to read this one!

I love this series and had so much fun learning about the beginnings of Iris, the Poison Queen. So many things about her and the way she views life make so much more sense after this. I felt like I was reading a fun fairytale, and kept having to remind myself that this girl becomes the Poison Queen so I’m not supposed to like her! A very fun read!
