I was surprised by the uneven quality of The Ancient Paths. Except for the last two chapters, quite a superficial tone pervaded the book.
Partly this was due to the author's reticence about explaining many significant issues. He makes this point: The reason for not discussing here further details is because we are a knowledge oriented society. Many people in the body of Christ are book and tape (knowledge) addicts. Knowledge, however, in and of itself, does not bring freedom or lasting change in one's life. Many of the things we are discussing are issues of the heart, not the mind. Ministry to the heart must take place, not just knowledge to the head... if I merely dispensed information without ministering to the hearts of those receiving the information, I would only serve to help further harden the heart.
Yeah, I get that. I get it big time. Anyone in prayer ministry knows this. The longest distance in the world is that between the head and the heart.
However, in suggesting that heart ministry is needed through an organisation such as ANCIENT PATHS, the author adopts that America-centric worldview. Not all of us can attend an ANCIENT PATHS weekend in the US, so to deny insights to those outside the USA or those who can only afford a book, not a seminar, is in my view a matter for reconsideration.
However, despite the deliberate lack of depth in the first part of the book, the last two chapters make up for all the previous vagueness. One deals with shame and the other with the connection between unforgiveness and idolatry. Subtle and deep insights dominate these last two chapters. They are just brilliant!
This book is very unusual, definitely not one of those main stream kind. I’ve read it a few years ago and its life changing in terms of how i look at spiritual life and psychology. However for people who have little spiritual discernment or zero psychology background, I would say read it cautiously or read it with friends, otherwise i’m worried that it may lead readers astray. Nonetheless, its worth reading, talking abt relationships with family and God’s healing for broken familial relationships.
The Ancient Paths goes into methods that God instituted in the Hebrew culture for insuring that children learned two important lessons about themselves - identity and destiny. These methods were lost in Christianity for centuries; however, their value is coming to light and being reinstituted by many Christians.
This book goes beyond ceremony explanations (my original expectation) and delves into the depth of the affects on a person who does not receive the impartation of knowing who he/she is in God and that God has a purpose and a plan for his/her life.
The Ancient Paths is a starting point for finding God's best for one's life.
Just a quick review for my friends. I have had three authors that have transformed my life for the better by their works, maybe four. Before this book, that list included C.S Lewis, John Eldridge, and Douglas Wilson (and I read widely). Craig Hill has now been added to the list. His revelation on deliverance and healing has already begun to work a great change in my life, and I've only just discovered his works. I look forward to reading through his additional materials and seeing how the Lord will use them in our lives.
The author discusses a biblical principle of ancient paths that God has given society to walk in. These ancient paths are meant to provide protection. He explains how culturally many of these ancient paths in the form of customs, habits and laws have been eroded over time. As a result, many have suffered not realizing who they are (identity) and what’s their purpose (destiny). This opens the door to Satan to define a person’s identity and destiny.
Read this book many years ago, and saw it again, and thought about its message. Ps 11:3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? The righteous can roll up their sleeves, and preach the gospel with signs following, and build people and churches. If the Foundations of integrity and truth are destroyed, we must discover the ancient paths, that are eternal, and learn to align our lives with these timeless truths...
This is a thought provoking little book on the power of our words and where our identity and destiny are truly rooted. Both things are critical to understand I believe in this current culture as we endeavor to authentically affect lives for the Kingdom of God.
Small book but author shares extraordinary insight and revelation. This should be considered one of the great Christian classic's! Powerful and life changing!
