Meet a new hero. As the invading Romans destroy his world, Calgacus must find a way to halt the invincible war machine. But as he strives to unite the tribes of Britain, he discovers that the Romans are not his only enemies...
This is an engrossing historical novel of war and intrigue, as the Celtic tribes cope with invading Roman legions in Southern Britain around 45 CE. This is the first of the author's Calgacus series (now at five books), and I am looking forward to reading the rest of these books. The hero is a young warrior, Calgacus, who is determined to unite various tribes to fight the Roman forces. His guerrilla tactics and heroic leadership is more than a match for the organized legions opposing the Celts. The battle scenes depicted in the novel are dramatic and very well done. But beyond that we get a sense of life in Britain two thousand years ago, with rulers, druids, and farmers living out their lives, and having to deal with the foreign invasion in various ways.
An enjoyable read. Well researched and well written. Fully developed characters with surprising intrigues and battle scenes even I could follow. Would love to hear more of Calgacus and his exploits.
