50 Ideas You Really Need to Know

Earth: 50 Ideas You Really Need to Know

Rate this book
Around 30 years ago, two things happened that were to revolutionize the understanding of our home planet. First, geologists realized that the continents themselves were drifting across the surface of the globe and that oceans were being created and destroyed. Secondly, pictures of the entire planet were returned from space. Suddenly, the Earth began to be viewed as a single entity; a dynamic, interacting whole, controlled by complex processes we scarcely understood.
This Introduction explores emerging geological research and explains how new advances in the understanding of plate tectonics, seismology, and satellite imagery have enabled us to begin to see the Earth as it actually is: dynamic and ever changing.

A little too technical for reading ease, informative nevertheless.

This book was really hard to read as there were many terms related to geology etc. The structure was quite chaotic and it was hard to choose what to read first - the text, boxes or the axis?!
However the chapter were only 4 pages long, the book contained a lot of pictures, graphs and interesting information.

This is a really good introduction to Earth Science. I think this is one of the better books in the 50 ideas you really need to know series.

Classified by topic, with about 4-6 pages per topic. E.g. of topics: plate tectonics, ocean currents, carbon cycle, water cycle, earth's magnetic core, etc.

Some of these topics we would be familiar with from our schooldays (e.g. water cycle), but they still made for interesting re-reading due to the greater detail provided. And other more complicated topics were explained concisely, in an easy-to-process manner. Some interesting questions and issues were raised pertaining to some of the topics covered.
