The Erotic Margin: Sexuality and Spatiality in Alterist Discourse

Gender and sexuality have long held an important place in western attitudes towards the people and regions of the world—from the titillating accounts of harem life in the Middle East to terrifying captivity narratives of North America. The Erotic Margin is a first attempt to pull together the large, disparate, and often contradictory literature, and view it as a corpus. Schick argues that such images served to construct spatial difference, and thereby helped Europe represent its own place in the world during an age of rapid geographical expansion.

Informed by the recent literature on human geography as well as feminist and postcolonial theory, The Erotic Margin focuses on erotica and sexual anthropology as well as travel literature in which, from the eighteenth century on, both traveler and destination were portrayed in unmistakably gendered and sexualized terms. Reviewing examples ranging from the New World to India, the Near East to black Africa, and the South sea islands to the Barbary Coast, the book reflects on why foreign women were variously portrayed as alluring or threatening, foreign men as effeminate weaklings or dangerous rapists, and foreign lands as sexual idylls or hearts of darkness.

About the author

Irvin Cemil Schick was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and obtained his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989. He has taught at Harvard University and M.I.T., where he is now a researcher. He is the author of The Erotic Margin: Sexuality and Spatiality in Alteritist Discourse and The Fair Circassian: Adventures of an Orientalist Motif (in Turkish), and the editor or co-editor of several books, including Turkey in Transition: New Perspectives, European Female Captives and their Muslim Masters: Narratives of Captivity from "Turkish Lands" (in Turkish), Women in the Ottoman Balkans: Gender,Culture, History, and the M. Ugur Derman 65th Birthday Festschrift.

رغم إسهابه في تبرير دوافعه لاستنتاجاته، إلا أن من المهم الاعتراف ان "ارفين جميل شك" قدم جهدا محترما في كتابه، فبتجاوز المبالغات في الشرح والنقل واحيانا لما يمكن ان يشتت الانتباه عن ادوار سعيد وميشيل فوكو، ستجد أنك تجاوزت المئة صفحة الأولى وأنت تتابع توضيحاته حول علاقات الجغرافيا وتبريراته لاستخدام المفردات او المناهج. قد يكون ذلك صلبا في بناء الدراسة الرزينة لكني وجدته مضللا للقارئ أكثر مما هو قابل لافادة الموضوع
بمزيد من الصبر على صفحات أخرى كان يمكن أن تتواجد في الحواشي اكثر من المتن، سندخل في عالم الاستشراقية الجنسية التي رسمت خطوط دراسة أرفين، ربما كان اساسها النظرة الغربية لقالب الحريم التركي والممارسات السلطانية الجنسية، فلم تقدم الا اليسير عن باقي الحضارات، الا اذا كان النزوع الحضاري التركي- لدى ارفين -يشبه في فوقيته النزوع الانجلوسكسوني في بطريركيته! لكن ذلك لن يفقد من قيمة الكتاب بعد التعامل معه بتجرد وتحييد المؤثرات الأخرى في الكاتب، فاكتشاف دلائله على الانتحالات الثقافية وتفسيراته البسكولوجية لعدد من السلوكيات الاستعمارية ستقدم لنا مساعده مهمة لاستكناه الكثير من الإجابات بتفسيرها القليل المكرر في بعض منهجيات المستعمر الغربي للمستباح الشرقي، بل –وان لم يطرق ذلك صراحة- فسيقدم لنا بابا أكثر وضوحا في قراءات اخرى للنمطية الاستشراقية في الادب الغربي والسينما الهوليوودية
رغم أن من المنطقي ان يهتف المرء بعد قراءة الكتاب .. ها حسنا فالشرقي ليس مهوسا جنسيا بقدر الغربي، اجد من الأصوب القول بأن الغربي المستعمر ليس أقل نذالة من ذاك المستبد الذكوري على النساء مهما بدا مضللا بألفاظه المنقاة واحتشامه الفلوكلوري
اخيرا لقد نجح ارفن ومساعديه على تقديم ما اختطوه لأنفسهم كخطة عمل لهذه الدراسة اغلب الظن، لكن اختياره التركيز على دلائل من القرنين الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر لم يعفيه من مسؤولية تقديم قراءات أكثر تفصيلا للاستعمار والتبعية والامبريالية الدينية والليبرالية من زوايا مختلفة، بالتأكيد كان التوسع فى ايامنا المعاصرة سيرهق الدراسة وربما يشتتها، لكن التقوقع داخل اللغة الفلسفية اغتصاب الاساليب الأكاديمية المفرطة لتقديم قراءة لترجمة ألف ليلة وليلة لن يكون أكثر فائدة من تشريح سلوكيات المستعمر تجاه المستباح!

أرفن أحد اروع الكتاب الذي وصف الاستشراق وصل لمرحلة جدا عميقة في تحليله للايروتيكية ,اكمل دور ادوارد سعيد بوصف الاستشراق واعطى مغزى لدور فوكو في تحليل الاستشراق ،أرفن أوصل الاستشراق لمرحلة عميقة جدا من التحليل

I'll make several confessions to begin: I had no particular interest in "orientalism" in the Western (European) consciousness. I didn't know what "alteritist" was when I picked up the book. I saw it in a used book store, loved "erotic margin" and the new-to-me ideas of space and sexuality being related, and bought it in a Sunday afternoon book temple haze.

I am, however, a PR researcher for purpose-driven organizations by profession. I think A LOT about media analysis, the lack of accountability for the wide diversity of media's influences on our views of the world, and the propagation of narratives to control and liberate. So when I learn we're going to be learning about colonialism as narration, putting the erotic and popular at the center, I was thrilled.

Little did I know how relevant these patterns are. You know how after you watch a dancing movie you think you can really move? Or after playing a video game you almost feel like you have your HUD up everywhere? Once I started reading this, I saw the patterns EVERYWHERE. In how the Dutch in my Meetups talk about their fellow citizens of Moroccan dissent. In how Canadian politicians talk about trans rights advocates. In how White feminist spaces try to wrestle with racialization from a fearful distance.

In short, I'm saying I am not sufficiently or specifically educated to appreciate this book for all it is and says. But holy shit do I appreciate it with what I do have.
