The conflict between Henry II & Becket derived from "the strong character of both the King & the Archbishop, the points of principle which divided them & led to Becket's murder in Canterbury Cathedral. Richard Winston covers both aspects in his search for the character of Becket, taking his readers thru the maze of medieval history.
Winston was much better known as the translator, together with his wife Clara, of Thomas Mann and other giants of German literature. It was interesting to see what he could do as an author, and the result is very much worth reading.
