Gawd DAMN!!! This was probably one of the best books I’ve read in a REALLY long time! I was giggling and smiling my way through this. And how often does THAT happen?!??!?
Isak teaches his 80 year old grandma how to play Counterforce (the book's name on the game Counter Strike) and how she’s a pure natural talent at playing the game… and how she becomes a part of the team. And their extra-grandma to ALL of them, taking care of them both in the game and offline as well, in the real world!
Not only is it a really good story, with the old lady teaching the kids a thing or two… but the dialogue in this… It’s FUCKING AMAZING!!! I can’t even sometimes with the awesome one-liners and comebacks that Grandma Edda delivers. The fact that there’s actually some inspiration from the real world in a team of gamers that are aged somewhere between 65 and 80… Which is so cool! Just shows you’re never too old, right?
I mean, that’s why Edda decides to try out online gaming to start with. She’s just become a widow and lives alone with her small poodle, she’s got nothing to do and life seems very dull to her. So when her grandson Isak jokingly says well… you should try online gaming with me… She just says YES! Show me how! And the awesome insanity starts.
There’s some social commentary as well, what with online bullying, parents that can’t take care of their kids thanks to drinking and drugs, drug use among gamers, loss of friends, grieving over loved ones… And the joy and friendship that you can get from being online, and also the emotional support!
This is just a great book all around, and I can not recommend it enough! Just READ IT!
