Jean Giono's Hidden Reality

Rate this book
Ford (English, Newbury College) published a translation of short stories by the French novelist, pacifist, and failed social prophet in 2002. Here he argues that Giono (1895-1970) believed that true reality is hidden behind appearances, and finds evidence through all his major novels in the themes of wind images; fear; lying; obscured vision, especially fog images; and his Protestant use of language, which views words as empty vessels to convey hidden ideas. In addition to analyzing the novels, he discusses the man and the critics, the concept of hidden reality, his literary resistance, the Hussard cycle, and his late fiction. He appends his translation of The Slave . The text is double spaced. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
