The second book in the Charm Wars series, A Light in the Window, continues the strong character development and tensions between and among the characters. Although Alyse the feminist is clearly the heroine and espouses equality, her aristocratic background betrays her occasionally. In one particularly amusing scene, she and Kate try to pass as commoners at an inn. Unsuccessful though they are, they remain endearing and, eventually, escape, only to fall into more peril. Alyse ultimately experiences a touch of humility and grace, which makes her an even more loveable character.
Meanwhile, Rill's obsession with becoming an aristocrat continues to annoy this reader, as he, along with Troy Estatis, attempts to bring Alyse back to the city. His conviction that the Estatis are being truthful with him and his desire to assuage them make him look foolish. The ending of the book brings some relief, but it seems he still has a good deal to learn.
As a side note, after I reviewed the first book, I noted that reading the "teaser" was frustrating, as it left me in suspense for a year. So I chose not to do so this time. Perhaps, on rereading the series once it's complete, I'll try that again. Meanwhile, Dan Lutts has produced another great read for anyone of any age who enjoys YA fantasy.
