“Instead of tellin’ the lass to leave ye alone, ye decided that it would be a good idea to marry her!?”
Veronica is determined to get the insufferable Laird to invest in her healing business. And the more he tells her no, the more she refuses to give up. But her pestering leads her into trouble, when he demands, as a counteroffer, that she marry him…
Laird Colby has no time for anything, apart from the Sinner’s Pub, the devil’s den he keeps in Edinburgh. But when his brother dies, leaving him with his two hellion nieces, Colby knows he must get a wife. And the healer who keeps showing up unannounced might be the perfect fit…
They have simple only business. No touching or kissing. And absolutely no falling in love.
* The Highlander Takes a Wife is a steamy Scottish historical romance novel of 60,000 words (around 300 pages) written by Eloise Madigan and published by Cobalt Fairy.
No cheating, no cliffhangers, lots of steam and a happy ending.
Oh boy. I don't like being so harsh but as a huge lover of historical romances I gotta say... it is very apparent the author that wrote this perhaps never read a quality historical romance herself or even attempted to do the proper research for her book.
This is NOT a medieval romance. It may claim it to be so but it's just not. This is a contemporary Scottish romance masking itself as a medieval historical. It is atrociously bad at pretending to be otherwise.
Between the modern dialogue, thoughts and actions of both MCs it is completely laughable they would try to pass this off as a historical romance.
The heroine Veronica was annoyingly stubborn and rude. It didn't matter how often she claimed she had manners and knew better than to act certain ways (ie: barging into the heros study repeatedly) especially because she hated when others acted said way to herself... but she still acted those ways regardless. She wasn't entertaining or likeable at all. Her attitude about just doing whatever she wanted was inappropriate for the supposed vague medieval time era.
She repeatedly stormed into the Laird's study, aka the hero Colby. She did this multiple times in what little I read to absolutely no punishment. It was just brushed aside. This would NOT be okay. Especially when it was established at the beginning how it wasn't even her first visit. Apparently she had been badgering the hero to support her business despite him outright telling her no.
The hero Colby was much like the heroine. Too modern in how he spoke, acted or thought. He apparently owned a bar of ill repute with two other Laird's. This for me was absolutely ABSURD. However could three important Laird's possibly own and run an establishment together (and be on site everyday to run it) and still maintain their own lands which by all accounts would be spread far and wide over miles of land. ?!?!?! The likeliness of this being remotely possible was absolutely ridiculous.
Add in how the hero was intent on finding someone who fit whatever "motherly" mold he deemed was needed to raise his nieces and... yeah.
This book was incredibly strange and I could not take it seriously. I was so disappointed by the writing and style. I was hoping to find a quick little romp in the highlands and instead only got frustration for my troubles.
I beg you author, do your research. This is shotty work for an author. Which is sad when there is so much effort and love that goes into creating these stories. Please just take the time. Do the research. Make it seem authentic. Just because the characters speak with a Scottish accent doesn't make it so.

The highlander takes a wife is a charming medieval historical romance novel written by Eloise Madigan. Colby is a Liard who doesn't know what to do with a persistent woman Veronica, until he decided she can be a solution to his problem, little did he realise that he was about to embark on a journey of love. I really loved the connection between Veronica and Colby and how they seem to compliment each other without having to think about it. The novel is well written and easy to read. The writer's description is so vivid that you can actually picture yourself in the scene together with the characters. Once you read this book you will fall in love with the author's writing style. I recommend this book to historical romance lovers.
Veronica and Colby Veronica and Colby were not exactly a match made in heaven but stranger things have happen. He works long hours at his business, she wants him to invest in her business and guess what they do not agree. Yet offering a marriage of convenience will serve an answer to his problem of the children he is responsible for now and perhaps for this determined woman she can see her dreams come true. I love the chemistry that these two had. There are also some very interesting characters in this tale, a bit of steam, and some danger just to keep you engaged. This is a super duper Scottish tale I loved it.
He takes a wife, but finds the true meaning of life
Veronica is the true catalyst for Colby to realize his full potential as a father to his brother's twin daughters. He doesn't know what to do with them, so decides to find a wife and a mother figure for them. Since he doesn't believe in love, he just needs to find a motherly figure. Little did he know that the annoying woman who kept returning to have him invest in her business, would be the one he chose. But there is always evil around to disrupt their lives. This was an easy and fun read.
This is a great story of a Laid that has taken over the care of his two young nieces following the death of their father. Their preferred her freedom and alcohol above the care of her girls. There was a young healer that was constantly barging into his office demanding his attention for help with her herb business. One day he saw how good she was with the girls so he gave her a choice if she wanted his help she would have to marry him and become a mother to the twins. Now how will this work
Colby knows that he needs a mother for the two lassies but he hasn't found the right woman yet. So when Veronica visits unannounced again he decides that she will make a fine wife. He just needs her to agree. Veronica knows that Colby can give her everything that she needs so she agrees. She just didn't think that she would fall in love with him but someone wants to make sure that they don't wed. Will Colby be able to win her over? Will they get their happy ever after? A good read. Great characters
Veronica and Laird Colby very interesting characters, lot of humour as they butt heads Veronica is strong will, speaks her mind and very determine to start her own business. Colby is also head strong and doesn't have time for Veronica things chance for them especially when Veronica meets the two nieces that Laird Colby has responsibility for. I recommend this book a must read.
Colby is annoyed that Veronica won’t take no for an answer on funding her as a healer. Colby has been left in charge of his twin nieces, one is extremely shy but takes to Veronica, that wakes up Colby. Colby comes up with a plan marry him, take care of his nieces and he will fund her. There is mystery and fun, a little sex .
A exciting story of Veronica and Laird Colby . It has a lot of humour with them having there disagreement at first but with Laird Colby having the responsibility of his two nieces it becomes entertaining . A very enjoyable read. I am on the ARC team and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers
Colby is a laird and he is caring for his two neices and then he meets Veronica and falls in love the first time he meets her There are ups and downs but they fall in love and he helps her sell her healing products This is a wonderful story loved reading
Laird Colby and Veronica strike a deal when he finds himself with two children after the death of his brother. Veronica is seeking and investor and comes to Laird Colby. After countless refusals they strike a deal when he needs a wife. This story had me in their corner for Colby and Veronica to get a happily ever after! I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.
An entertaining story with the Laird and determined healer getting more than expected . Determination resulting with all reaping rewards. Love and romance despite obstacles and danger create a close knit family in the end. Well worth a five star rating and I highly recommend this book and author.
Veronica is a healer that would like to make her business a success but needs some help to make it happen. She goes to Colby Laird Fergerson. He says no repeatedly but offers her another kind of position. She says yes and their story is a very good story.
I absolutely loved reading this book. I loved the characters and storyline so much. Veronica and Colby were wonderful characters. As always Eloise writes a great story. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜😊😊😊😊😊
I fell for Veronica & Colby! They had quite the adventures in business & intrigue. Twins Arabella & Paisley were too much fun to see grow in security & love! Well done! Delightful read to enjoy again & again!
Worth a read. Sweet, with the right amount of steam. Just, jarred a bit a couple of times (mostly stays with the historical feel) due to modernish language (like Oxygen in lungs and such)
Right from the start the story drag me in and I could not put it down. How a woman shown twins girls more love than they’re birth mother and a uncle learn to love and respect the woman he chose to be his wife. Need to read it. It drags you into the story.
I love a book that starts immediately with the story. This one did exactly that. It was a great read and I loved how the relationship between the H and h built.
Colby and his nieces didn't know what they needed. Along came a healer and what did they know? Read and you will discover everything that will take place.
