A new work on Amedeo Modigliani will be out November. An early review piqued my curiosity and hence, I found this little gem in our library.
It is a survey of his work with a generous helping of photos of his works, sketches, associates, comparable work and his life in general.
The biographical info has what I assume are the important known facts and elements. His life was unnecessarily sad. Cross addicted to drugs and alcohol, he died at age 35. At the time he felt he was at the end of his creativity.
His companion, Jeanne Hébuterne, is certainly notable for her suffering, much of which was surely caused by him. There is one sketch of hers and she seems to have talent too.
This is the first biography of Modigliani I read. The author apparently put more effort on writing the artist's private life than his artistic life, but of course when you look at Modigliani's paintings you really cannot overlook the relationship between those two lives of his. Besides, this man's life was God's great work of love story... hit every woman hard, Modigliani managed to do it before and AFTER his death.
