With the help of Friedrich Engels, German philosopher and revolutionary Karl Marx wrote The Communist Manifesto (1848) and Das Kapital (1867-1894), works, which explain historical development in terms of the interaction of contradictory economic forces, form many regimes, and profoundly influenced the social sciences.

German social theorist Friedrich Engels collaborated with Karl Marx on The Communist Manifesto in 1848 and on numerous other works.

Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin in London opposed Communism of Karl Marx with his antithetical anarchy.

Works of Jacques Martin Barzun include Darwin, Marx, Wagner (1941).

The Prussian kingdom introduced a prohibition on Jews, practicing law; in response, a man converted to Protestantism and shortly afterward fathered Karl Marx.

Marx began co-operating with Bruno Bauer on editing Philosophy of Religion of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (see Democritus and Epicurus), doctoral thesis, also engaged Marx, who completed it in 1841. People described the controversial essay as "a daring and original piece... in which Marx set out to show that theology must yield to the superior wisdom." Marx decided to submit his thesis not to the particularly conservative professors at the University of Berlin but instead to the more liberal faculty of University of Jena, which for his contributed key theory awarded his Philosophiae Doctor in April 1841. Marx and Bauer, both atheists, in March 1841 began plans for a journal, entitled Archiv des Atheismus (Atheistic Archives), which never came to fruition.

Marx edited the newspaper Vorwärts! in 1844 in Paris. The urging of the Prussian government from France banished and expelled Marx in absentia; he then studied in Brussels. He joined the league in 1847 and published.

Marx participated the failure of 1848 and afterward eventually wound in London. Marx, a foreigner, corresponded for several publications of United States.
He came in three volumes. Marx organized the International and the social democratic party.

Marx in a letter to C. Schmidt once quipped, "All I know is that I am not a Marxist," as Warren Allen Smith related in Who's Who in Hell .

People describe Marx, who most figured among humans. They typically cite Marx with Émile Durkheim and Max Weber, the principal modern architects.

Bertrand Russell later remarked of non-religious Marx, "His belief that there is a cosmic ... called dialectical materialism, which governs ... independently of human volitions, is mere mythology" ( Portraits from Memory , 1956).

This is lacking a little in depth, with most of the selections coming in under a page or two, but, still, this makes for a very fast read and the breadth and quantity of selections from across Marx's work makes this a very accessible and comprehensive (if a bit bullet-point-y) introduction to his thought.

Karl Marx was an incredibly smart dude and wrote a ton, so it's nice to have his thoughts regarding a particular subject edited and arranged in a readable manner. Many people seem to think Marx was just about workers rights and the revolution of the proletariat and crushing capitalism, but his social commentary and philosophy are the basis for pretty much all his popular theories and solutions. This book is a good place to start understanding Marx at a more fundamental level (in my humble and rather uneducated opinion).

Selected Writings In Sociology And Social Philosophy

A good book to pair with this reading might be - An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith

Karl Marx's social philosophy is idealistic in nature, not pragmatic. His theories stem from a utilitarian hope and cause, a picture lost and forgotten through some of his followers' attempts at extreme levels of change, a few ideas are even to be admired. But perhaps upon application they are doomed to fail, from what is now retrospective history today was Marx's hopeful future.

Marx helped define and describe the situation of the social-class structure, and maintains that throughout history of slave and master, it became more subtle but very much alive in feudal agriculture and landowners, then to bourgeoise industrial capitalist and wage-labourers. The title changed, but the nature of work afforded hasn't, Marx argues.

He also tries to define what "history" is, and what it means to us as social beings. History is made, we can presume, for as long as there is man. Karl Marx also maintains that it is the social being of man that constructs the consciousness, rather than the other way round. The idea of Nature versus Nurture plays a role. In one section, he uses a quote that tries to derogatorily say philosophy is simply religion and thought mixed together and ought to therefore be condemned. However, philosophy extends to other areas and allows abstract-thinking that could solve practical or social problems, somewhat akin to problem-solving and logical arguments set by abstract mathematics.

With that said, I thought that his analysis of the co-dependency in production of Crime & Law, locksmith & thief, arms & war, as investments of the private capitalist economy, a good example. Though also crudely stated, he quotes Shakespeare to make the point of attraction to money across, although I much prefer the statement, "Money is the root of all things evil".

This is a brilliant introduction, practically unrivalled from what else I have seen, to Marx’s general thought; not only for sociology (which is of course it’s intention) but also for understanding the fundamentals of the Marxist orientation (hehe) on economic and existential issues too. Rubel and Bottomore have chosen fantastic extracts from an incredibly diverse and wide range of Marx’s works to fulfil the reader on the most intricate matters. I would highly recommend this to anyone, from beginner to well-read on Marx, who wants a more appreciative understanding of his philosophy.

Whilst I wish there were more parts as to the economic side of Marx, that is not really under the remit of this book, and thus cannot be blamed on the authors.

The only irritating thing about this book is that I was reading it at about the same time as I was going for interview. I had only read about half of it before my interview came up, and I hadn't got to the bit about how Marx conceived revolution. Then I was asked in the interview about revolution as a concept, as I had submitted an essay on said subject as to Russia. I only have myself to be angry at for my own slow reading!

Otherwise, I love it

Bugünkü sosyal demokrat, sosyalist partilerin çoğu, Marx'ın "toplum felsefesi" ürettiği, hukuk, politika, tarih, felsefe, bilim yazıları yazdığı, üç ciltlik "Kapital"i yazdığı yıllarda kuruldu, örgütlendi!

I understood about 30% of this , however I’m sure it will be a 5 star when I come back round to it. This was my first dip into philosophy and I liked what Marx had to say on capital punishment. Boy really didn’t like Hegel though, full on roast at some points.
I didn’t go into this thinking I would understand it, I understood more than I thought but some philosophy guy on you tube said going in attempting to understand the whole thing would be naive so maybe it could be a book for beginners?

while i do not regret reading this book, it did teach me that i am not the biggest fan of reading about philosophy. this is my first marx book - weird choice for the first, but i feel like i have a better understanding. the best part is that i bought this book used, so there were a bunch of things underlined and written in the margins :,)

The writing is very confusing. It feel unnatural. Very hard to get through the book. I think the translation tries to be extremely accurate but it looses meaning in modern time.

The Introduction was quite good. Its odd reading though. Short Selections from across a range of texts wherever Marx touches on particular topics, grouped by topic area.

It serves well as a means of comparing what Marx wrote on say "Alienation" in the German Ideology versus Capital Vol I or other texts. But otherwise I"m not sure its a worthwhile place to start with Marx or of much purpose.

I really like that Marx's works are condensed in this book based on categories around some of his main themes.
