Rapturous Intent #4

Promised Intent

Rate this book
She once made me a promise and now I intend to hold her to it. I never meant for my life to turn out this way–to be the guy who ruins everything he touches and sacrifices everything and everyone who matters to him for my next high. It’s been two years since I hit rock bottom, but my band family still hovers over me like I’m a burden they have to bear, and I’m sick of it. So when my long lost childhood best friend, Melrose Fletcher, becomes our new tour manager, an idea forms in my head. One that’ll serve to get the guys to relax around me, and will also keep me accountable on tour. I’m certain she’ll shut me down when I proposition her to be my fake girlfriend on the tour, so I pull the only card I’ve got left–the promise we made to each other before our worlds, and our friendship, fell apart. What started out as pretend now feels like the realest thing I’ve ever experienced. But does a guy like me really deserve a happily ever after? Promised Intent is a steamy ex-childhood best friends/fake relationship rock star romance. It is the final book in the Rapturous Intent Series.

So, I definitely cried during Devoted Intent (the one before this)… but holy fuck. This one had me bawling because all I wanted was to hug and protect Kasen at all costs. He’s such a broken boy, stuck on his childhood trauma and the different actions that resulted in his life as he continued on.

If you’re new to this series (the Rapturous Intent series by Cadence Keys), this is the fourth and final book. Each book follows a different couple that’s in the band, and you feel yourself fall harder and harder for these men (at least I did!!!!). As we learned in the previous books, Kasen had a really bad drug problem and blamed himself for Robbie’s death (their band manager, but also one of their best friends). In this one, he’s clean and sober, but he’s nervous about going on tour with the band and staying sober. He’d never done a tour or played sober, so he holds onto a promise that his childhood best friend (Melly) made him about always being there for him. She’s currently their band manager and is going on tour with them replacing Robbie. His thought process? Have her fake date him so that the guys in the band won’t need to worry as much about him, and it gives them time to reconnect after 15+ years of distance and not knowing one another.

SO FAKE DATING AND CHILDHOOD FRIENDS RECONNECTING? I’m sold and my heart was so freaking happy. This book was literally everything and I’m so sad that the band’s story is over. Cadence just blew it out of the park and blew me away.

It’s so funny because this wasn’t even technically an ARC (though I did get to read it before it’s out). BUT, Cadence was doing a sale on her website where if you purchased a signed book, you got the e-book as well. And because I had already had 2 of the e-books from previous ARCs, she sent me the new one and I was soooooo freaking happy that I didn’t have to wait until the release date. I literally devoured this in under 5 hours because I couldn't put it down and refused to wait to see how this ended - staying up waaaay past my bedtime, but it was worth it!

This is the fourth and final book in the rapturous intent series! This book follows the fourth and final member of Rapturous Intent, Kasen Stone. Kasen has become my favorite! This is an ex-childhood best friends reconnecting, fake dating, forced proximity, rockstar romance, and recovering addict. These are some of my favorite tropes to read!! It’s a captivating story that kept me hooked from beginning to end. Their childhood bond was ultimately what I loved the most. This book is one of the BEST read to finish my 2022! I really can’t wait to see what Cadence does next!! LOVEE her writing!!

Promised Intent is the fourth and final book in Cadence Key’s Rapturous Intent series. I have read every book in the series, and I have to say it ends with the best, this book.

Melrose and Kasen met as kids and became best friends who supported one another through their difficult childhoods. They were separated as teens when Mel was forced to move across the country with her dad. Both of their lives spiraled out of control without each other’s support. Mel suffered emotionally in her personal relationships and closes herself. She does not make friends, has no home base, and focuses only on her job. Kasen joins the band but falls deeper into the wrong crowd and illegal substances. He hits rock bottom with his second overdose and the death of their band manager Robbie.

The pair reunites when Mel takes over as their tour manager. At this point, Kasen has been sober for a year and half but everyone is worried as they return to the rock star tour lifestyle. Kasen calls in Mel’s promise to always be there for him. They decide to fake date one another to keep him on the straight and narrow and to keep the band from hovering. As with most fake relationships, their real feelings come rushing back. They struggle against personal demons as well as the mutual attraction that flares immediately back to life. Can Kasen stay sober and forgive himself for the sins of his past? Will Mel let Kasen in, or will she keep him at arm’s length?

Kasen’s an amazing character. Ms. Keys wrote about a man who is completely broken having lived life feeling as if he wasn’t enough to be wanted by anyone. I was rooting for him as he fought to stay sober, to forgive himself for the damage done to himself and others, and to believe that the band genuinely cares about him. Mel was not as easy to root for as she really kept herself from opening up to Kasen. Maybe it was because we didn’t get the complete backstory until the end of the book.

I loved Promised Intent. It’s an engaging story that kept me hooked from start to finish. I loved reading about the couples from the first three books. This information didn’t feel like a distraction to the main story. I highly recommend this book as well as the Rapturous Intent series.

I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.

“There are parts of life that were easier when I was high - I never had to feel any pain, I was the life of the party with more friends than I could count, and I could ignore the emptiness that sometimes weighed me down so much I thought I was going to drown. But none of those things were worth what I nearly lost - my band, my found family, my life.”

“She makes me feel things I haven’t felt in a long time, and that’s the exact opposite of everything our arrangement is supposed to be.”

“You do not have to be defined by the mistakes you’ve made. You need to learn from them en move forward.”

Thank you Cadence, for this ARC.

So I'm new to this series and I know it seems crazy to start at book 4 but since you can read them as standalones, I had no problem reading this. I'm a sucker for Rockstar, second chance and childhood best friend. With Kasen and Melrose, time has not been kind to them. Yes Kasen is a famous Rockstar but with that came temptation and he fell hard to it. He was lonely without Melrose and needed something to get his mind off it. With the band,he was able to focus on the music but his life got rocky. Enter Melrose, she's got some major past trauma especially when it comes to guys. Let's just say Kasen has his hands full with her. She does not make it easy on him. They make on a promise to help him stay focused and well there's still love there. These two made my head hurt for real. They'd have a moment and then it blew up in their face. It was a journey on whether or not the walls would permanently come down or not. I liked the book along with the characters in it. It was great to see the journey and watch them fall in love!

Promised Intent had me so emotional through the whole read. It's such a beautiful, gripping story of two broken people finding their jagged pieces in each other.

While I've never struggled with an addiction or ADHD, I found myself relating to both Mel and Kasen throughout the entire book. They were so incredibly real and grounded as characters, and I empathized with their struggles so much. As I read, they slowly became part of my family and they'll stick with me as pieces of me for a very long time.

This was my first read of this series and it's an absolute travesty that I haven't read the other books. If they're as engaging and gritty as this one, this series will easily become one of my most cherished reads.

Thank you to Cadence for giving us this amazing, thoughtful story, and thank you to The Smuthood for the ARC. I've never read something that felt so raw and real to me, and I'm completely and utterly blown away by Promised Intent.

If I could go back and teach myself one thing when I was little… it’s that a woman doesn’t need a prince to slay her dragons. She is capable of picking a sword up and slaying the dragon herself. The ending of this book was me repeating this phrase over and over… and I’m here for it! Melrose is the nomad that never had a home and Kasen is the addict that can’t seem to get anything right. Together these two gave the strength that each other needed to fight their own battles and slay their own dragons. I absolutely loved this book, from Chapter one to Chapter 36, I inhaled this book. The one thing I appreciated the most is that this author accurately portrays the addict and the addict mind. I would know, I am one. She shows the mind in which an addict wants to stop but can’t, the suffering, grief and shame that an addict goes through on a daily basis. I would highly recommend this book… Bravo to the author on a well written work of art.

Wow, the emotional hits just keep on coming with this series and the author knows how to get the most out of us with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

Kasen is unarguably the most broken of the band, and that’s saying something. You would think that the author would therefore pair him with a strong character to fill the gaps, but instead we get a perfectly imperfect heroine to complement the delightful mess that is Kasen.

This book is a journey from addiction and pain, through to acceptance and recovery with a lot more events in between that make the hea so well deserved.

No holds barred this book doesn’t dull the edges at all. Dark and emotional to the end.

A fitting finale, with enough about the surrounding characters to satisfactorily tie up their stories neatly too

Ok, this book. I absolutely loved it. It wasn’t your typical rock star love story. It was so much more. These characters, they both have issues from their childhood, that they are dealing with. Kasen.. he’s this sweet, amazing, troubled man. He feels so much guilt, and shame. He turned to drugs in order to deal wish his childhood. And that turned in to a major problem as he got older. And now, he’s clean, and trying to not be a burden on his band mates. And Mel.. she has a crappy childhood as well. Her dad was awful, and she left as soon as she could. She’s grew to be tough, and not depend on anyone. I swear though, as much as I loved these characters, there were points when I wanted to smack Mel. Like, I don’t want to give spoilers, but she just needed to open her eyes.. I highly recommend this book, it was so good. And I’ll definitely be reading the other books in this series.

Wow

This series keeps you wondering what will happen next. Kasen and Mel were best friends as kids, who got separated when Mel moved away to a different state with her controlling father. They wrote letters to each other for sometime until Mel stopped writing to Kasen, his letters being returned to him unopened and him never receiving many of her letters. Both characters have gone thru much turmoil, meeting up 10+ years after going their separate ways, Kasen becoming a star in a rock band and Mel being a top manager of different bands. Both have to fight their demons and find if they can finally find true happiness or not. So sorry this series is ending. Would be neat to read how all the characters are doing 10 years down the road. Looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Melrose and Kasen met as young children and became fast friends and soulmates. But both have a lot of turmoil in their young lives and are torn apart as teens. When they meet up again, Mel is a tour manager who has built walls around her heart. Kasen is a bassist in a famous band finally clean after several overdoses. As Kasen goes out on his first tour clean, with Mel as the tour manager, he calls in a favor and asks her to be his fake girlfriend to help him stay on course. I loved these characters and their resilience in the face of so much pain.

I have read the other books in this series and really like them all. You could read this as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order.

I read an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Kasen + Mel’s story takes you through the ringer!! Their past is painted so well that I makes you love that they had each other just to rip your heart out when you find out when happened to both of them. But the way they start to open to each other in the present is so beautifully written I fell in love with their story so hard! The battles they both had to go through with their trauma broke my heart but the unwavering support the band gave them & they have each other made all the tears worth it!! It was a great wrap up to this great series!

As always please check the triggers, some scenes may be difficult for some readers.

Finally we have Kasen's story, we have read about his troubles from everyone else but its time to see it from his side. Addiction, Guilt & his conscience.
Will Kasen be able to control his cravings while on tour or will history repeat itself.
Fake relationship with childhood best friend just screams trouble in every way.

Such indepth writing really shows the mental damage that can occur from narcissistic relationships.
Absolutely loved the beauty of Kasen & Melrose connection & how soul mates will find their way when the time is right

Okay, so I’ve never read anything by Cadence Keys before, but after reading this book, I’m definitely going to have to read her other books as well!!! Kasen and Melrose’s love story was deeply emotional and wonderfully heartfelt, and I loved every second of it. I loved the idea of ex childhood best friends who somehow ended up back in each other’s lives, and throwing in the fake dating trope as well? Complete and utter perfection. I connected with both Kasen and Melrose for different reasons, and I loved how watching them learn to be strong both as a couple and as individuals. All in all, this was a fantastic read, and I highly recommend!

Most emotional romance book I ever read. I actually cried during the reading. Al you want to do is hug, protect and hold him tight.
I love the romance in the books, but also the fact it's not a hallmark like romance. Real life is in there to. Sometimes life sucks and love that these books contain just the right amount of real life intertwined in them.
I'm major fan since the first book I read. And she never disappointed me. This wasn't a exception. Which is kinda funny because sports and music trope books aren't my favourite genres to read.
Mostly ignore those and skip to other genres

This is the 4th and final book I’m the Rapturous intent series! I bawled my eyes out 😭 Full on ugly crying. This is Kasen and Mellys story. Kasen is our broken boy who blames himself for his band manager, and friends, death. He’s sober now but going on tour is making him nervous. Turns out his childhood best friend Melly, is their new band manager. They reconnect and end up “fake” dating 😏 in an effort to keep Kasen on the straight and narrow. I must say out of all the books Cadence definitely saved the best for last 😍

wow

Wow, just wow! I have fallen in love with Kasen and Mel. Kasen has so many facets to his personality from sad, to vulnerable, to the little boy who just needed his best friend. Mel has put up so many walls because the men she has allowed in her life have treated her so poorly. Kasen has always been her only true love and she has only been his. Substances and emotions get in the way for a while but true love Wins out. I love how this gives us an insight to what was going on with the rest of the band members. Hope there will be more

Kasens character pulled me in from the last book, I wanted to know more about him. I absolutely love his story. He is broken and has been through alot. He is trying to prove to his band mates/friends that he has changed although going back on tour has him nervous because he has never played sober. Mel who is the new band manager just so happens to be someone from Kasens past. She is his childhood ex best friend. He goes to her hoping that she holds true to a promise she made when they were younger. This book is full of emotions and so worth the read!!!!

I love this series of books, but I think this one is my absolute favorite. Kasen’s tortured soul has called to me since the very beginning. He’s cleaned up his act now since Robbie’s death, but still feels like he’s on the outside looking in. Until Melrose walks back into his life, and seems to give him another reason to live and prosper!
A wonderfully told story about how deeply a person’s past can impact their present and future.
A MUST READ!

Childhood friends that grew apart. They both had reasons for not trusting the other but when Karen needed someone Mel was there for him even years later.

Going on tour with your childhood best friend seemed easy enough, keep him on the straight and narrow right?

Old feelings and new seemed to creep into their relationship. Was it worth exploring or should they go back to being friends?

Absolutely loved this story and will be going back to read more of authors work.

The pain, the trauma, the emotions were so raw and real. This book had my attention from the first page. The characters were flawed, but relatable and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

I wasn't sure I was going to like Kasen, but dang it I do! His story is about recovery, starting a new sober life, finding the girl of his (12 yr old) dreams whilst working with her. Courage to tell his story and believe and love himself again.
Both his and Mel's back stories are heartbreaking, but in the end they each get and deserve their happily ever after.

this book is a fantastic way to end the series, the character development for these main characters is off the charts. The hardships both characters went through from their younger years to adult hood, you feel like you've been there the whole time. The author keeps the situations they go through completely raw and emotional. I definitely recommend reading this series in order.

This book was so good! It’s so deep and emotional, I loved it. Mel and Kasen are friends from childhood and each have their own crappy and terrible trauma from childhood. They each have their own way of coping and end up going separate ways but are now reconnecting when Kasen goes to Mel hoping that she’ll hold up her end of the promise they made years ago. Such a great end to the series and such a great read.

This book hits a lot of tropes and makes you feel a lot of emotions while doing so. This book is the fourth in a series, and while it works well as a stand alone, it would be better if you read the series first. By this point there are plenty of characters involved, each with their own story that had been covered. My heart hurt at the straight up deadbeat parents depicted and the way those choices affected the main characters. The character development in this was well done, and portrayed trauma and the stages of attempting to heal from it. The struggle to trust and love not just others, but yourself again.

Melrose is a kickass tour manager whose walls are the only thing higher than the plastic heels she wears to her pole dance class. She has one hard and fast rule: no getting involved with musicians. But what is she supposed to do when one turns up on her doorstep and cashes in a long forgotten promise?

Kasen is the bass player for one of the best bands in the country. And they are getting ready to go on tour for six months. This will be the first time he is sober on tour, ever. And with all the things that come with touring, he knows he needs help. So he goes to his tour manager, his ex best friend from childhood, with a plan to help him have the support and not feel like a burden to his band mates.

I am happy and sad about this book. Happy because it is so, so, so good and sad because it's the last book of this series and I have enjoyed it so much! This is Kasen & Melrose's story and I just can't say how much I loved it. It's a bit of a second chance romance although they didn't really have a first chance thanks to others. They were childhood best friends and the only thing that each other had to cling to until they didn't have each other anymore. From that point on, each of them was changed and neither reacted in a good way. Learning to trust each other was hard, but when they realized that it was worth the chance....ahhhh....so sweet!!

I did read an ARC copy of this book, so ymmv.
