Intuition: Unlock Your Brain's Potential to Build Real Intuition and Make Better Decisions

Rate this book
We have all experienced a 'gut reaction' or acted 'on a hunch' – we've used our intuition.

Until recently, science didn't have a good explanation for how intuition works. In fact, some scientists dismissed it altogether as unproveable and 'woo woo'.

Here, in the first book to explain the science behind intuition, Professor Joel Pearson, an expert in cognitive neuroscience and leader in human consciousness research, turns what we think we know about intuition on its head.

At his dedicated lab at Sydney's prestigious University of New South Wales, Pearson was able to identify and recreate intuition in a lab, proving its existence and laying the groundwork for this book – a practical and entertaining introduction to the brain science underpinning intuition, and a framework for how we can develop the ability and put it to use, in the boardroom and beyond.

Intuition follows basic rules, and Pearson explains that by understanding them, we can better train ourselves to use our intuition productively, supercharging this incredible human ability and harnessing it toward better decision-making.

Intuition is not a sixth sense – it's a superpower.

This was a pretty interesting read for several reasons. Aside from the fact that I was drawn to the topic, naturally, based on the title alone, the author's approach to the subject was, well, unexpected. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Joel Pearson himself mentions how some of his takes may be controversial, so he appears to be aware of himself. But I guess when it comes to things like "intuition", its origins and what it is, it is a matter of personal belief.

The author approaches the subject from a scientific standpoint, and in order to do this, he creates a matrix of sorts through which intuition can be scientifically tested. Joel pushes the idea that intuition is purely a matter of science as opposed to what he terms "woo-woo" or magical thinking. Many people and cultures around the world would differ when comes to what a hunch or "gut feeling" is. However, overall, this was a pretty interesting read.

I think what people may find "controversial" are his definitions of certain terminology, over and above the whole idea of what intuition is.

The point of Joel's study is, in essence, to observe how intuition can be used to make better conscious decisions. So essentially, drawing from the subconscious mind to actively improve decision-making. He takes us through case studies, his own scientific experiments, as well as techniques one can implement to intuitively make better decisions, starting with small things, of course.

So while I found myself disagreeing here and there, it was really fun and intriguing to learn from. Going through the experiment in the early part of the book was so interesting, but also got me wondering about other things pertaining to media, things like films etc. and how they affect us and our thinking.
