Eva has a world inside her head: the land of Astraela, where Darkness and Corrupted beasts threaten eternal doom. Vivid dreams have given her four books as an up-and-coming author, but when undead fiends appear on Earth for a killing spree, she is caught in the crossfire between fantasy and reality.

These creatures shouldn't exist outside the pages of her books—and neither should Emrys, the fictional hero who slips in from the shadows to tell her Astraela is facing its ultimate destruction. With the fate of her own world at risk, and her main character's life being drained by an age-old curse, Eva must choose between stepping up to the plate or watching every reality she's ever known crumble before her eyes.

Perfect for fans of The Witcher and Once Upon a Time, Vision is a new adult fantasy novel filled with heart-pounding adventure, magic, and the power of friendship.

Content/trigger warnings for "Vision" include, but are not limited to: Animal death/harm, character death, dismemberment, disturbing imagery, gore, sexual assault.

❧ Eva Hale has had dreams of the world of Astraela for years, following the adventures of Thana, a girl cursed with a touch of death, and Emrys, an immortal phoenix man of legend. Enamored by her dreams, she writes them down and publishes them. Until the dreams suddenly stop, and she has no idea how to finish her series. It seems like her time with Thana and Emrys may have come to an end... Until Emrys shows up in real life to barbeque one of the very evil creatures from her dreams. He tells her that her dreams have been real, and Astraela is in danger. Only by working together do they have any hope of saving it. Eva will quickly learn that the greatest of dreams can turn into the gravest of nightmares.

❧ Story time. One late night, near the end of October, I prowled the list of newly updated stories on Wattpad’s fantasy list, trying to find a dark fantasy tale to have members of my discord read for our “Raid” initiative. I found this wonderful little book opening with a completely silent town with a spoopy atmosphere because of the man falling out of a tree. So, I drop the link to some of my team so they can see the awesome book I found... And one of the members mistakes the link as someone they’re supposed to message to join the server. I lose the book for Raid, and Wrenna Stone joins Dreamland’s discord...

A few years pass. Her continues to post. She joins book clubs. People trickle to her book. She becomes part of the Dreamland Community’s team, eventually raising to mod status. And she becomes an amazing friend to me. And now here she is, publishing the book that I found one day while combing through Wattpad, searching for gems among all the new updates, and man, was this an absolute diamond amongst them.

❧ I love Once Upon a Time. I enjoyed Supernatural. So when you have a book that basically smashes the two concepts into one? Heck yeah, sign me up! My personal friendship with Wrenna aside, I just really had fun with this book.

Were the characters sometimes too quippy to the point of unrealistic? Sure, but was it fun in a way that made up for it? Yes. Because my gosh, did I love the characters. Especially Emrys. My precious angsty Phoenix boy who tried to take all of the weight that he did not deserve. I cannot blame Eva for having a crush on her own fictional character, much less having a crush when she found out he was real.

Eva and Bobbi, our main Earth girls, were dorky besties who handled all the craziness going on around them differently but amazingly. Bobbi’s sass and Eva’s wonder were *chef’s kiss*. Also, like, seriously. Ignoring all the bad things that occurred, Eva got to live out a writer’s dream. Can I trade places with her? Just, again, without all the bad things that happened.

Then you have Mystia. Good ol’ Mystia. She’s a tiny ball of spark that you do not want to mess with. Tell her she can’t do something, because she’ll do it, but also ten times better just out of spite. Because she’s just awesome like that. Seriously, I’m pretty sure everyone would be dead without her amazing self and her candle-throwing skills around. Praise to the Mystia! Angsty boi is still my favorite though. No offense, Mystia. Please don’t poison my drink.

There are also a lot of other minor characters who are spectacular. As well as others that I would like to burn in hellfire unendingly :DDDD Those who have read the book know the specific ones that belong in that latter category.

❧ Also, like, can we just talk about the plot? An author who publishes about her awesome dreams just for them to be reality? That alone is awesome. But guys, you do not understand. There were chapters that literally left me internally screaming because “WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON???”

The juicy twists, just gaaaaaaah *screams into pillow for eternity*

Also, the consequences of things happening to a certain main character because of what they did prior to the start of the plot, and that just always hanging over our heads and following us like as a dark shadow T^T I don’t want it. Make it go away please.

AND THAT ENDING!!! Not just the ending-ending. But the last 50 pages of just uttering crushing specific characters, and then ripping out my soul by being so cruel. It wasn’t needed, Wrenna. It wasn’t. Why you do this??? T^T

Ugh, guys, the book is so good. Go read it so you can be traumatized... I mean, find joy with me!

❧ Okay, but you gave this book a 4 out of 5 despite all this screaming (well, a strong 3.5 rounded up to a 4). Why? Well, like I mentioned above, there are a lot of snarky quips and humorous bits that sort of remind me of Supernatural type humor, which isn’t bad, but those scenes are definitely typically less realistic and just humorous, which although I enjoy, take me out of it a bit. That alone though would’ve been minor enough to just bump it down to a 4.5 rounded up to a 5 still, though, as a lot of media do this. Entertainment be entertainment, after all.

However, there were a couple other personal gripes that just kept pulling it down bits and bits more. Such as Eva feeling a bit too passive in the overall narrative. It felt a lot like the story was happening *to* her rather than her playing an active roll. Which, like, I get it. She’s an Earthling trying to survive a lot of very savage magical things, but I just wanted more out of her. You could argue this was a large part of why the story was very evenly split between Eva and Emrys in terms of PoV, so you had one who could handle it and one who couldn’t, but... Yeah, just, for me, I wanted her to have a more active role, even if that role wasn’t combat-oriented.

I will say here that my copy is an ARC copy, so my following problem may be corrected before the final published version rolls out. I mentioned that there are wonderful twists, and although they were mostly carried out very well, there were some questionable things to them as well that I thought could be smoothed out to leave a lot less confusing bits dangling. Could they be intentional because there’s still answers to be gained in the sequel? Yes. But it felt like the characters took the punches a little too well, didn’t question things enough, stuff like that. I’m not asking for things to be fully smooth, just that if the strands are being left hanging, they be a little less frayed, if that makes sense.

❧ Overall, though, this is an absolutely amazing debut that I highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of the shows I mentioned before. Or just who loves the idea of the concept. Or just loves Dark Fantasy. It’s a really great book, and I’m so honored to be a friend of the amazing author who wrote it <3 Looking forward to all you achieve, Wrenna!

„Vision” by Wrenna Stone combines urban and portal fantasy, mixing the real and alternative worlds. The protagonist, Eva, is the author of a fantasy novel series she created on the base of unprecedently vivid dreams she’s been having. The troubles start when the night visions stop, and suddenly, she’s finding herself anxious and unable to finish her story. But this will be the least of her worries because her sleepy little town gets plagued by bizarre and unsettling events that seem suspiciously similar to what happened in her made-up world.
Before we venture any further, a word of warning. “Vision” is not the kind of story where characters are teleported to their dream fantasy world to have adventures and time of their life. It is a dark and we-are-all-going-to-die-soon type of narrative. Astraela, Eva’s dream world, is dying, and its dark corruption slowly seeps into Earth. Sadly, it is not the best time to venture forth and discover this fantastic world, but Eva doesn’t have much choice in the matter, as she is swept by the events and forced to run for her life pretty much all the time.
The strongest part of the whole novel is the cast of quirky characters. Besides Eva, we have a Phoenix guy who loves setting things on fire but can’t figure out how to use a microwave; a devoted friend who owns a coffee shop and is a magician in the kitchen, though she is always keeping a tight leash on the others, trying to stop them from doing stupid things (which rarely works) and a half-goblin lady who loves explosives and hire undead to keep her expenses low. Despite the very dark storyline, plenty of hilarious scenes lighten a mood and make you snort with laughter.
From the main cast, my least favourite one was Eva. She’s not a bad character (though her helplessness was annoying sometimes), but she looks rather plain and boring compared to her colourful crew.
The storyline initially seems simple – one world is dying, the corruption is spreading to Earth, and we need to do something to stop it! But as the story progresses and we learn more about the characters and their past, the whole focus shifts from the world to the people trying to sort out their own histories and problems in the first place and save the world later. And that second part won’t be easy and certainly won’t happen in this book (it’s the first book in the series, so characters have a lot of work to do before they get to that).
The last act of the story was great. We got a roller coaster ride full of action, characters suffering and doom approaching inevitably. I liked the ending, even though I’m sure many people will find it a bit too depressing. In my opinion, it was a perfect closure for the first book.
If you like a dark fantasy and are not bothered by brutal things happening to poor, traumatized characters, I’m sure you’ll find this novel entertaining.

Had to whip out my computer to write this review because furiously typing on my tiny phone keyboard just wasn't gonna cut it--and then I forgot all my coherent thoughts. So... incoherent thoughts it is?

I'll just start off by saying I LOVED this book from start to finish! The start is fun and exciting, with only a touch of the angst that is to come. I really enjoyed the banter between characters and the way they led the reader into the story without being too confusing, but not too slowly either. There was never a dull moment, but it also never felt like I was drowning in world building, convoluted plots, or more characters than I could keep up with. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I enjoyed how balanced everything was. The story really started to pick up the pace in the third act, however, where it became quite the rollercoaster. There were many times that I stayed up late just to read "one more chapter"--you know how it goes--and I feel that is truly the mark of an excellent book.

I told myself I was prepared for the story to take a dark turn because I'm pretty tough, you know. But then, Wrenna decided to rip my heart out and stomp on it while I lay there helpless and sobbing, so thanks for that. Truly a soul crushing experience in all the best ways! If you love having your heart ripped out, this book is definitely for you. I promise it won't disappoint.

Anyway, all in all, this is a fantastic debut and an even better start to a series. I will be eagerly awaiting book two!

Have you ever read a book with a world so cool that you wished you could transport yourself into that book? Well, this dark fantasy story of an author going into her “book world” is a good reminder that it won’t end well for you or the characters you love. XD

Vision starts off cozy and cute, with Eva the aspiring writer fighting off writer’s block and trying not to fall in love with her coworker. But when she realizes that her story has been real the whole time and is invading her world, everything spirals. And when I say spiral, it spirals. The cozy vibes transform into fun, fantasy vibes as the new world is explored—before everything quickly turns very dark and very horrific. The amount of twists and turns in the last few chapters of the book is also mindblowing, and I just had to binge the last part of the book all in one night.

Eva is a lovely main character who you will automatically root for, while Emrys is almost too perfect. Bobbi and Mystia are also wonderful side characters. The book is very well-written, with passages that kept me reading over and over for the sheer beauty of it. And when the story got extra exciting, it was so easy to breeze through.

Overall, if you are a fan of dark fantasy and DnD, this book would be perfect for you! I highly recommend it and I’ll be patiently waiting for the second book.

Thank you to the lovely author who gifted me a book for free for this review! She’s as incredible of a writer as a human being.

I have to start by saying that the characters and narration absolutely make this book. From Eva's relatable writer quirks to Bobbi's wit or Mystia's snark—and of course, the lovable idiot my heart melted for repeatedly that is Emrys—it was easy to become invested in the main gang and get swept along by their excellent banter. Emrys gets a special gold star though. Why can't he step out of fiction for me, huh?

The world-building was a blast too; Astraela keeps that familiar spark reminiscent of a DnD-esque world while also being fascinatingly unique, and I loved the way details gradually unfurled as we discovered more about it alongside Eva. And the plot was a wild ride, to say the least. I went in thinking I knew what was happening and tumbled out the other end utterly traumatised and unsure if I could trust anyone anymore. I whizzed through the final arc barely able to put the book down.

In honesty, this is probably a personal 4.5 star, if only due to certain points where the pacing didn't quite hit for me, or the fact that the main characters (particularly Eva) felt a little passive at times in regards to the passage of events. But those are such minor things that they didn't really steal from my enjoyment. And there was so much intrigue and juicy angst set up in this book that I can hardly wait for the next instalment. This series is going to rip me to pieces, I can feel it.

By far one of my absolute favorite reads of 2023! The worldbuilding, characters, suspense, literally everything about this book is so beautifully written. I had the pleasure of reading an earlier version of Vision prior to the release as a physical book, and I have to say even the second time reading the novel with the edits and modifications, I was just as mesmerized as the first time. I felt very much there with the characters, the words lifting me right off the page and into the chaos between Earth and Astraela. I absolutely CANNOT wait for Risen and to see the fate of a certain chaotic fireball. Such a magnificent read, will recommend many times over to anyone and everyone who asks (and doesn't ask, because if you're not reading Vision, wyd? xD). Seriously, go read!!! 100/10 highly recommend.

The roller coaster of emotions that this book shoved me on was everything I wanted/needed and more. Amazing plot aside, I really enjoyed the writing style. It was the right amount of descriptive and poetic that I was able to consume this book within a rather short and unhealthy timespan.
Also, the characters were so great! Even the ones that I wanted to strangle with my bare hands because HOW DARE YOU. That’s how you know a writer is good when they get you to be extremely emotional about so many characters in their novel. I really liked the development of the romantic and platonic relationships, it felt natural and probably contributed to the absolute pain I felt by the end of the book. But fear not, everything you’re going to experience with this wonderfully crafted story will be worth it! Promise~

hands down, my favorite fantasy book. this book basically took me on a rollercoaster of emotions and REALLY fed the dark/horror imagery. and i LOVE all the characters. every single one of them has my heart, and the writing feels raw and real and fun, something that's missing in other books that are so focused on style that they forget the heart of the book.

emrys. that's it. that's the sentence.

um, so that ending...that was rude.
