The structure weakened the book for me. First part was a biographical synopsis but with little attention to his poetry, most of this was pretty bloodless. The middle part was mostly devoted to gently chiding Izaak Walton for being to hagiographical & then giving John Carey's book a well-deserved trouncing. The third part goes over the poems & sermons & this makes the biography part come alive. If Edwards had gone through the life with discussion of the poems as he went along & refuting Walton & Carey at apposite places, the book would have worked better. Discussions of the poetry & sermons is thoughtful.
