West Oaks Heroes #4

The Three Week Deal

Rate this book
He’s a smoking-hot firefighter with a wild side.
And now, my obnoxious new roommate. When my apartment catches fire, I know I’m in for a hell of a day. It only gets worse when I meet my temporary new roommate—the same grouchy firefighter who just yelled at me. Matteo De Luca is a tattooed, loud-mouthed, alpha hunk of a man. And he doesn’t trust me, especially when he finds out I’ve been accused of a crime. A crime I didn’t commit. Whenever we clash, the fiery chemistry between us just burns hotter. Too hot for any woman to resist, even a hard-nosed detective like me. The only solution? We make a deal. Three weeks, no strings. Nothing but benefits. But soon, we’re swept up in a conspiracy that could take us both down. As the threats and danger escalate, I realize Matteo’s far more than just a shameless, dirty-talking temptation. He might be the hero I’ve always needed. This suspenseful romance features an ex-Marine firefighter with a big heart, a tough damsel who hates finding herself in distress, a page-turning mystery , and epic cuddling sessions. Angela and Matteo’s story can be read as a complete standalone. Don’t miss this steamy, heart-pounding who-done-it!

Let me start by saying, I liked the books included in this series. The writing style, story flow, characters, romance, spice, and suspense when combined, it's just perfect.

Matteo and Angela started on the wrong foot. Her apartment was on fire and he was one the firefighters who responded on the scene. But the dog of Angela's neighbor was left in the building and she was asked to rescue it, which she heroically did. But that stunt was reckless and made Matteo so mad because she could've hurt herself along the way. This first meetup didn't really go so well and made a bad impression on both of them. But not bad enough for them to notice how they were physically attracted to one another.

Since she doesn't have anywhere to go, Angela called her bff to ask if she could stay for a while in her apartment (her bff was out of the country). Which she more than happily agreed to and also told Angela that she'll be having a roommate. And surprise, surprise that the angry firefighter was the said roommate.

It turns out that the Matteo was actually goofy, sweet, protective, and funny. He was a grown man with a golden retriever personality. He tried to befriend Angela and make their living situation not so tense. For a week they were civil with one another, he even invited her to join him and the other firefighters to celebrate his birthday.

But Angela was so caught up with her own investigation, and didn't want to impose so she never went to the party. Her non-appearance made Matteo irrationally mad and he doesn't even know why he felt that way. He thinks it was because of his budding attraction to her. So instead of focusing on that, he decided to find someone else to help him release some tension. But when he opened his dating app, he saw Angela's profile and that she was currently active. He got even madder because of the jealousy thinking Angela was currently looking for a hook-up. So he left his own party, stormed into their apartment and propositioned Angela with a "roommate with benefits" setup since both of them were attracted to each other. And this is where everything begins.

Angela was smart, dedicated, feisty, and a no nonsense heroine. She doesn't take crap from anyone, works really hard to prove herself, and to achieve her dreams. However, she was also very guarded and won't accept help from anyone. She was so used to being alone and keeping everything to herself. There were times I got annoyed with her most especially when she kept pushing away Matteo, when all he ever did was stay and support her with everything that's going on with her life. But I also understood that she was scared and all of her feelings were new, something she never felt before. But when she finally realized that everything is better when Matteo's on her side and that she actually wanted to be with him everything just falls perfectly into place.

Matteo was persistent and never gave up on Angela. Even though she was being prickly or wouldn't let him in, he never wavered from trying to know her even better. He stood by her side and became her support while she was finding out who was behind all of her attacks. He was so open with his affection towards her and didn't shy away from telling her how he really felt. He never made her feel alone despite the fact that she continually put some barriers between them. He got this never ending patience and understanding for Angela that made me love his character so much. Perfect book boyfriend through and through.

The two of them were so good together even their sort of partnership with the investigation worked out so well. Their chemistry was off the charts and don't even get me started with their spicy scenes, they were chef's kiss and definitely sooooo hot and good. And maaan, Matteo's mouth should be illegal, Angela didn't stand a chance whenever he opens that sinfully beautiful mouth.

I loved that there was no separation in this book. That they act maturely and don't let their insecurities and emotions drive a wedge between them. I appreciate how they talk things out instead and decide to be open with one another. This type of resolution is more satisfying than reading characters being miserable apart.

I liked the suspense too. I never guessed who was the main culprit and I'm satisfied yet also sad that it was him. I didn't want him to be the bad guy because in the previous books, he was a supportive guy, not actively but his support was always there. So his character arc was so unexpected that it caught me off guard. Why does it have to be him? But then I also realized he was a grown man who goes after women at least 2 decades younger than him. Not that I had a problem with the age gap but I felt like he was preying on younger women. Anyway, I'm just sad for his character.

Overall, I loved this book. I just removed the 1 start because I didn't like who turned out to be the villain. Aside from that, I had fun while reading this, and I loved Matteo and Angela together. This may not be one of the popular tropes, but the surprise pregnancy made me so happy. I know that they'll be good and loving parents, most especially Matteo. He was just a natural care giver and protector. Readers can definitely see that with the way he treats his niece and all the people who are special to him. I loved the bonus epilogue too and it was just so endearing reading how their love seems to only deepen as months go by. Also to see how they dote on their baby and their family. ❤️

P.S This is my second favorite in this series so far. Six Night Truce is still on my #1 spot.

DNF at 30%

Well, this is frustrating. After a run of wonderful books, this is the second DNF in a row. This one isn’t as bad as the previous one but I didn’t care for the heroine, a female detective on a small town police force. I found her very cold. And I didn’t feel much for the hero, a firefighter. Not a good combination. Plus he was a firefighter and I may be wrong but I think they make pretty decent money. He’s also got a roommate. Rather than pay rent he works for her. Plus he works as a bartender and also picks up extra shifts at his firefighting job. Yet he doesn’t seem to have two nickels to rub together. This does not compute.
He has his sister in law and niece move into the house when the roommate goes on a months long assignment without running it by the HOME OWNER. And this was because the sis in law is also poor as a church mouse.
When there is a fire in the heroines apartment, her bestie who happens to be the homeowner invites heroine to stay there while she’s off on assignment since there’s a free room - except turns out there isn’t.

I just found it messy with people I could care less about. I’m willing to try this author again but this particular book isn’t working for me.

We're back in West Oaks with another action packed story! This is a forced proximity and enemies to lovers trope. Angela is a detective for West Oaks PD and Matteo is a firefighter. A fire at Angela's apartment building has our two main characters meeting. Matteo is pissed when Angela risks her safety to safe a neighbors pet. And then Angela becomes Matteo's temporary roommate, and they start to butt heads. An investigation against Angela also has them racing against time in order to clear her name. I loved them despising each other at first and then realizing they totally have the hots for each other. Matteo is such a dirty talker in the bedroom, and Angela loved it. The action kept me on the edge of my seat. I thought I had it all figured out until I didn't! And every single thing about Matteo had me swooning!

*I received an ARC from the author for my honest review*

FmC is a detective. MmC is a firefighter
I was disappointed with the quality of the story.
This shouldn't be classified as an enemies to lovers. They had 2 bad interactions, and then they hooked up.

FMC annoyed the shit outta me. Her personality in this book didn't line up with previous books.

She was constantly going off the rails without even knowing what was going on.

The fact she is attracted to everyone in the book..."if I hadn't met Matteo first..."

(She was sleeping with her mentor, who promoted her to detective the minute he got his promotion to captain. 🤨 Yet she wondered why a more seasoned officer hated her.) Such a badass

I loved MMC, except he was a pushover.

Angela, a police detective and Matteo, a hunky firefighter star in this enemies to lovers, steamy mystery crime thriller.

Her apartment building is on fire and contraband is found in her apartment. She has nowhere to live and now someone is after her. She moves into her best friend's apartment and meets her roommate who is a tall hunky firefighter!!

I loved the twists after twists in this crime mystery, it had me flipping through pages with great anticipation. Just when you think you know who did what, you're wrong again.

I’m only sad that I started at book 4 of this series, thank you to Book Sirens and Hannah Shield for this amazing opportunity to read such an amazing book.

This book caught me off guard and completely consumed my thoughts. I thought I knew characters and, at times, doubted everyone. Whom can we trust? Who is after Angela? The twists, some expected, some not. Each book in this series just gets better, and now we wait for the next one.

Thank you to Booksprout and the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

I really couldn’t get into this book. I skimmed nearly all of it and almost didn’t finish it. The characters just felt a little one dimensional to me. Nothing really deep between the two or within themselves either.

Honestly I disliked this book so much I’m not sure I want to finish the series.

4.5/5⭐

We have met Angela Murphy briefly in prior books. She is a West Oaks PD detective. The story starts with her arriving at her apartment in flames. She talks to her neighbor, who is present, and she advises Angela that her dog is still in her apartment and asks for her to get him. Angela, being the caring and helpful person she is, decides to unlock her inner Spider-Man and climbs up to rescue her neighbor's dog. Witnessing all of this is Matteo, one of the firefighters who responded to the fire. Seeing Angela risk her life like this pisses him off. Their first meeting wasn’t the best, with both making a bad impression on each other. But this meeting also awakens a physical attraction to each other.

Since Angela’s apartment is burned down, her best friend Neve offers her apartment for Angela to stay in while Neve is away. Neve is more than happy to do this and tells her that she will have a roommate. When she arrives at Neve’s place, she realizes that her roommate is none other than the pissed off firefighter she met at her apartment, Matteo.

I really enjoyed this read. As always, Hannah’s writing style has a way of pulling me in from the first page. I was excited to read about Angela because of her appearances in prior books. Hannah is always good at balancing the romance and the underlining suspense plot of her books.

Angela has a strong, feisty, and hardworking character. She is always there to help someone, and she works very hard to prove herself. She was highly protective, though, and refused to accept any additional help. She had become so accustomed to keeping everything to herself and not allowing anyone to get close to her that when Matteo tried to get to know her, stick around, and support her through everything, she pushed him away. She was terrified because she was experiencing all of these emotions for the first time. But once she realized that having Matteo by her side made everything better and that she actually desired to be with him, she began to open up completely to him.

Matteo never gave up trying to get to know her, despite the pushing away, which I appreciated. While she figured out who was behind all of her attacks, he stood by her side and became her ally. He was very forthcoming with his love for her and didn't hold back when expressing it to her. He gave Angela the time to open up to him and made sure to never make her feel alone. He understood her deeply and was patient with her.

Plot-wise, I loved it. I always love reading Hannah’s books and trying to figure out who the villain is. I had like two people who I thought were the villains, and I was right, though I had doubts.

Overall, I’m continuing to love this series and I can’t wait for the next one.

Matteo and Angela

If I had to choose one word for this book, it would be intense. There were so many twists and so many villains. Hannah did a great job leaving clues for every one of her villains and just when I was convinced it was one person, another popped up. But not only was the suspense intense, the romance between Angela and Matteo was equally as intense. They went from enemies to roommates to friends to friends with benefits and then finally soul mates.

Angela and Matteo met when her apartment building was on fire. He was the fireman in charge of the scene and she was the crazy woman who climbed scaffolding to save her neighbor’s dog. But as a result of that night, Angela’s life is turned upside down. She’s set up as a corrupt cop and finds herself an unwilling roommate to Matteo, who is a witness in the investigation against her.

Matteo and Angela both have a lot going on in their lives. Angela is still mentally recovering from a shooting two years ago and struggles to let anyone in. Matteo is just trying to be a man his deceased brother would be proud of, helping his sister-in-law and niece in any way he can. Matteo struggles with people’s perception of him. He loves being the good time guy but there is so much more to him. Angela gradually recognizes that and takes care of him just as much as he takes care of her.

Angela has been such a stoic character in the other books she appeared in and it was fun to see her embrace the side of her that she never let anybody see. Matteo and Angela were the perfect Yin and Yang and brought balance to each other. This was a great book, I loved the writing and the plot and the characters all equally.

Angela and Matteo's Adventures . . .

Police Detective Angela Murphy and West Oaks Fireman Matteo DeLuca end up together in an enemies-to-lovers story. Angela comes home from shopping and her apartment building is on fire! A neighbor lady grabs her to say her Pomeranian Daisy is still inside and the fireman won’t let her go back. So Angela, who as a police detective knows humans are their first priority, looks up to the balcony where she sees the dog jumping up and down at the glass. And she’s sure she can climb on up. She has faced worse danger on the job! But she does make sure the fireman is not looking her way, so deep down, she knows this is not a good decision! And then Matteo De Luca sees her! She is on her way down and passes the dog to him. And when she slips and falls, she lands on him and they tumble to the ground. She smirks when he threatens to have her arrested and he quits while he is ahead and walks away.

Neve offers Angela her apartment since she will be gone for a month. Neve’s other roommate turns out to be the bossy firefighter who tried to stop her from rescuing the dog from her burning building. Will Matteo be put in an awkward position since the Chief just told him illegal drugs had been found in one of the apartments… the one that belonged to Angela. There is an internal police investigation going on. And his sister-in-law Emily and her daughter Natalie are also going to be in the apartment since he thought Neve’s room would be available. How will this all work out? And who planted drugs in Angela’s apartment? Maybe their 3-week-plan will get his mind off all his troubles?

Finally, we have Detective Murphy's story! And what a story...

When Angela approaches home and sees a commotion, something is wrong - her apartment building is on fire.
After an exciting encounter with one of the firefighters, everything goes sideways. On the personal side, her apartment has fire damage and she can't live there. Also, as by her BFF, she needs to mingle and have a life. On the professional side, she gets suspended because the firefighters found drugs inside her apartment. Like this amazing detective would have anything illicit. At least, the sexy and sweet firefighter she met, Matteo, believes her.
Since she's homeless and her friend is out of the country, Angela moves into her house. And who's her new roommate? Matteo!

This wasn't one of my favorite books from Hannah, which doesn't mean I didn't like it. It's a bit unfair, but I expect to love every one of her books. So, when I just really like it it's weird.

I loved these two and their relationship - they are adorable. The side characters were well-written and significant to the story. The crime-solving mystery part was good and kept me entertained until the end.
As a bonus, it's always good to revisit the previous characters.

This book literally made me go insane because THAT PLOT WAS AMAZING. Okay hear me out, the start seems like a typical romance book with friends/roommates with benefits but the mystery of who is trying to hurt Angela was AMAZING.

I technically figured it out very early on but you were constantly made to doubt yourself as the story went on and you absolutely couldn't have guessed the direction in anyway whatsoever. The twists and turns. Absolutely amazing. I was literally screaming at the end.

On the other hand, I will say that as I read this series, I've realised the author - Hannah is really good at plot twists, mysteries and writing about the connection between the main characters but the spicy scenes lack and this one literally made me cringe because Matteo's dirty talk was just not it for me. But I'll forgive the author since the plot was so good. This book did have more spicy scenes than the others due to it being a roommates with benefits book so it was alot more cringe.

Overall, the book was great, slower than the rest of the series and one that you have to push through to the end but is worth 10000% of your time if you do!

Angela is a detective with the West Oaks police department and Matteo is part of the fire department at the same area. When she comes home to find her building on fire she is stunned. But when a neighbor tells her that she couldn't get her dog out Angela takes it upon herself to get it. Matteo isn't happy by what she has done and voices his opinion to her. Angela's friend tells her to stay at her place while she is waiting to see what goes on with her apartment. She is surprised to find that Matteo is the person watching her friends place while she is gone. Angela is shocked when she is told that they found contraband in her place and tries to prove her innocence. Its not long before things heat up between her and Matteo. Will Angela discover who is out to get her? Can she and Matteo be together?

This is an amazing story that once I started it I couldn't put it down. This is a well written and very entertaining story. Its a book that any book lover would enjoy.

Angela is a detective and after drinks with a friend one night she gets home to find her apartment building is on fire. Her neighbour cant find her dog so Angela climbs up the balcony and saves the dog. Matteo is the pissed of fireman waiting when she gets down.

The friend she had drinks with offers her place as she is away for a month. She has a roommate but Angela said its fine. She is just grateful for somewhere to live but of course when she gets there the roommate is Matteo

Matteo moved in his sister in law and niece without telling the friend even though she is the owner of the house. Angela thinks its his wife and daughter so gets mad at him while he flirts with her

Angela is kind of a bitch at first. Matteo just wants to help and she is just mean. They both obviously like each other but just snipe at each other instead. But it doesn't take long for them to fall into bed. His SIL goes to stay with her parents so they decide to be roommates with benefits for the 3 weeks she has left at the house. Then they have a lot of sex!!

She is been set up by someone, They found drugs in her apartment after the fire that were stolen from evidence at the station. She is suspended for trying to help. Her boss is her ex and he's not happy she's doing her own digging.

I have to say I did not guess the end. There was twist after twist. Who I thought it was turned out to be wrong and I like when that happens. I've guess all the endings in the other books but this one got me.

It was nice to see the other characters from the other books

Nice epilogue

I love a good enemies to lovers romance and this story fits the bill. While a misunderstanding leads to Matteo and Angie butting heads, it doesn't take long for them to realize there is a spark between them. But with everything going on in her personal life, she isn't ready for a relationship. Thus their three week deal that they agree to.

Matteo is one of those caring people who is actually happiest when he has someone to look after. And while this can lead to him taking on unnecessary responsibilities at times, his persistence is will be a plus as the story progresses and he tries to keep Angie safe. Angie is an independent woman who has issues trusting others but as Matteo shows her in actions that he will be there for her, she starts to let down her walls.

I loved the interactions between these two, the suspense throughout this story, the appearance of characters from previous books, and the twists and turns. These are my favorite characters so far in this series.

If you like your romance novels with loads of action, then Hannah Shield is the author for you. This has action a plenty, and more twists and turns than you can imagine. And the ending will absolutely blind side you, I seriously did not see that coming. The suspenseful thriller aside, this is also a romance though you wouldn't have thought so the way Angela and Matteo clashed when they first met. Their 'meet cute' is her climbing up the side of a burning building to save a dog, totally ignoring his instructions not to (for her safety of course). Before you know it, they have a roommate with benefits deal going. Great character development from both, end up with them in a loving, respectful relationship.
Loved the ending, proved just how far they both had come.
I truly hope there is more to come from this series as I have thoroughly enjoyed this and all the books in the series so far.

This was a nice and easy read.

The writing was good, the storyline flowed so well with lots of interesting and suspenseful details and events, the way I put on my detective hat and connected all the dots was, now thinking back, ridiculous but so good and satisfying at the end, love it.

The chemistry between our 2 mains was also good. Their relationship development was done perfectly, at least to me. I love how they slowly got to know, open up and be comfortable around each other, enough to trust and show each other things that they’d never let others know. And their communication skills were immaculate, they were so straightforward but at the same time, nice and respectful to each other. Not to mention, they were sarcastic and funny as hell.

I’m telling you if this ain’t couple goals I don’t know what is.

Anyway, overall, I enjoyed this a lot and had a really good time.

Matteo and Angela

Hannah Shield is at it again with another romantic suspense thriller. Someone has set fire to Detective Angela Murphy's apartment complex and framed her with damaging evidence. With nowhere to go, Angela crashes at her best friend Neve's house, only to find herself face-to-face with the ridiculously attractive firefighter Matteo DeLuca. Matteo's got his own set of problems, including taking care of his sister-in-law and niece after his brother's passing, and Angela's got her own set of walls to break down. The two of them make a deal - Angela gets to stay in the house for three weeks until Neve returns, and Matteo gets to try and wear her down. What starts as a physical attraction quickly turns into something more, and the heat between them is off the charts. Can Angela handle a man like Matteo, who's always there for her and knows just what to say to make her melt?

Angela is a detective, she rushes home to find the flat next to hers is on fire, her neighbour is worried about her small dog, so she climbs the scaffolding to rescue him. Matteo, a firefighter, sees her and gets cross. Later she arrives at her friend's house to stay, as her flat has been compromised, turns out that Matteo lives there too!
Someone is setting Angela up because drugs are found in her flat. It appears that evidence is disappearing from the police station. One of Angela's old cases is asking for a retrial as he says he was innocent of the murder.
Is this all connected? What a twist at the end!

Sheild's does it again! This is book 4 in the series West Oaks Hero's and a wonderful addition to the series even though it can totally be read as a standalone. A thrilling and captivating read. Our main characters are Matteo and Angela and these two didn't not start off with hearts in their eyes for each other, although the physical attraction was definitely there. I loved these characters and their interaction. Adored the storyline with that twist at the end! A wonderful read with both sweet and steamy romance that will have you falling in love with these characters and a storyline that is smooth flowing and entertaining. I loved it and can't wait for more!

That was rough...

What can I say?

These are the most one dimensional characters I've read in a while. The plot was meh at best.

Angela is a "badass cop" and we know this because she told us so. It's certainly not because of her actions. Clearly someone hasn't heard of "show, don't tell." Her entire character was giving #menwritingwomen. Not a good thing.

Matteo was whatever. He comes off as an immature frat guy and that's pretty consistent throughout the book. He grew on me a bit, as he got involved in the investigation and showed he had a working brain, and then by the end he was back to his idiotic caveman ways (not in a sexy way).

Ngl I almost dnf-ed at like 8% and then told myself to at least get to 30%. Got there and skimmed the rest.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. It is very good with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Angela and Matteo meet the night her apartment building is on fire. Then again when she takes up her friend's offer of a place to stay. The fire is also the start of troubles for Angela where things are being made to appear that she is a dirty cop. There are different people behind everything but it all relates back to a case she did after being shot. Angela and Matteo get together during this time and fall in love. It is Angela with the help of Matteo and her friends who finally solve the case, clear her name and get the true culprit arrested.

maybe not her type is her type

Angela and Matteo. Angela or Murphy has been on my mind since her role in the first book and what she encountered at the end of that book. Now we are back and she has another hit in this book with an IA investigation. While that occurs she is in danger, homeless, and finds herself a firefighter romance. Matteo is a great hero and I love how the book showed his fight to do right for loved ones. The family dynamics was present in a different way with in laws and college roommates. The in depth conversations showed great character development and helped make this a great couple and interesting story as I did not see that bad guy coming!

This is the fourth book in this incredible series and this is Matteo and Angela’s story. Matteo is an ex-marine, who is now a grouchy firefighter, while Angela is a police detective. When Angela’s apartment burns down, she ends up as Matteo’s roommate.
This is a well written story which is a fast paced, enemies / lovers’ story, with suspense, danger, intrigue, action, romance, emotions, humor, witty banter, bickering, twists, tension, mystery, and love, which leads to an entertaining, unpredictable, and steamy addictive page turner.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Because the Fire and Police departments work closely together on some occasions, it was inevitable that Angela and Matteo would cross paths eventually. Preferably on the same side, but that didn't seem to be the case with evidence at a scene. However, becoming house mates helped them see that they were actually on the same side.
While using their skills and investigating together, they were able to connect the evidence to find the culprit as well as solve a prior case of murder.
This author has become a firm favourite to follow as I am hooked from beginning to end and detesting any interruptions while reading.

We already knew Angela as the tough cop from the previous books. In this story, we see a more vulnerable Angela, with scars, who just witnessed her apartment going up in flames and finds herself entangled in corruption suspicions. It's the perfect backdrop for her to seek solace and protection in Matteo's arms. Matteo has his own problems, and at first, he seemed more interested in having fun with Angela to forget about his own dramas. However, as the story progresses, he appears to be a good man, capable of love and care. Considering it's an action romance, I found this part to be well crafted. Although I guessed who the villain was quite early on, the story made me doubt and then confirmed it in the end. I ended up being hooked until the very last page.

Stand alone in series

I’m a fan of the West Oaks series, so I was watching for this one to come out. There are some characters from previous books that appear here, but the story itself is entirely separate and can stand alone. I like the mix of actions db suspense in Hannah Shield’s books, though I actually would have liked this one even better if it ended before the epilogue.

I received a copy of the book at my request (and read it in KU), and the opinions here are my own.

I totally enjoy this West Oaks heroes series. While this is book four, its a total standalone between Angela, who is a Detective at West Oaks PD and Matteo from the Fire department. While Angela seemed cold in the beginning, i warmed up to her. I loved Matteo though. The whole story line will literally keep you guessing right to the very end. I'll be the first to admit that I was wrong in who I thought was behind everything. A great story and a wonderful addition to the series in my opinion. I received an ARC copy.

This is a great series with alpha men and kick arse women. Matteo and Angela are completely at odds with one another until fate keeps throwing them together. The attraction is strong and they begin with a three week agreement of roommates with benefits until it develops into more. As someone is trying to frame Angela and danger escalates, the author does a fantastic job keeping you guessing with plenty of twists and turns. Both characters have issues from their past. But by leaning on each other, they are stronger.
