A Different Read For Me

I recommend this picture book to those who enjoying taking a deeper look into life. There were many battles in history and the winners of wars write their own history while ignoring how the other nation felt and suffered, especially when there’s major differences between the cultures. Whose way of living is right? Or is the conquered only looking to enslave, pillage, and force their customs onto the other?

Free-verse poetry centered on Moai

This is a thought-provoking book. It consists of thirteen free-verse poems, each related to an original work of art. The book also touches on other ancient civilizations and has an environmental message.

This is a quick read of poem-like phrases of inspirations. It also contains picture art, some with humor. The author uses the mysterious rocks from Easter Island, known as Moai, as the focal point.

What I really enjoyed about this book was how well put-together it is. The fun images go perfect with each poem. The poems are deep and allow for reflection. The way some of the verses have classic songs quoted was a unique way of doing and it put a smile on my face. This book isn’t spiritual or religious in any way. I know some might think the Moai are meant as such but there are different ways of looking at it. In this book, it is meant, more so, as a cultural backdrop into the ways of the Rapa Nui people and how together they were and adding the modern struggles of what today’s society is going through, enlightening us with how we could learn from these great artists of the past.

This book fascinated me even more about the Moai. I’ve seen a few documentaries on these large rock-shaped heads and have always enjoyed learning about them. This book was a fun way to see how we have destroyed our world and how, if we really try, we can probably make it a better place. There is so much corruption these days that I think is leading us, our world, into self-destruction. It doesn’t have to be that way though. This is an easy read in which we all could learn something from. If anything, the picture art are also interesting and tell a story as well.
