Pictures in Blue: A Blue Grove Mountain Novel

Rate this book
Avery Reid is at a standstill in her life. Being a newspaper reporter isn’t the fulfilling career she expected it to be, especially when she dreams of pursuing photography. It’s not until her best-friend books a three-week trip to Blue Grove, Oregon on her behalf that she starts to seriously consider leaving a career she’s worked toward most of her life. Between her strained relationship with her mother and her stagnant job, the absolute last thing she needs is a man in red flannel coming in and wrecking everything. Or maybe it’s exactly what she needs. Hudson Waters lives a quiet life in his home town, Blue Grove, where he is still grieving the loss of his sister three years later. Dubbed “the town grump,” there are very few people he speaks to outside of his family and his dogs. All he wants to do is spend time with the people he loves and work on his wood carvings. The less he socializes, the better. Until she comes to town and all he wants to do is talk to her. He knows he needs to stay away because he knows everyone leaves in the end and she won’t be any different. Pictures in Blue is about finding your passion a little bit later in life. It’s about healing and moving on from the past. Featuring a handsome, long-haired “lumberjack” who’s good with his hands (

Pictures in Blue is a beautiful written book with themes of loss and grief, self worth, and opening yourself up to happiness even when you’ve been made to feel like you don’t deserve it. The relationship between Hudson and Avery is so soft, so vulnerable, and so freaking beautiful.

And tropes? My god, all of my favourites made an appearance! Last names as foreplay? Check. Only one bed (or sleeping bag)? Check. Grumpy/sunshine? Check. A soft man who is totally gone for his partner from the moment they meet? BIG HUGE CHECK!!!!!!!

Also, golden retrievers, a great small town setting, loveable side characters (I can’t wait for the rest of the couples to reveal themselves further as the series progresses), a cute kid, and just enough open door spice to bring the heat!!

I’m a big fan of the author and was so honoured to receive an eARC in exchange for my honest review. LOVE YOU KELS YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!! 🫶🏻

5 years into a job that Avery once thought was her dream, she's miserable. But it's not just her work affecting her, her mother's constant cruel comments have led to a battle with anxiety and depression that she's working hard to overcome. Thankfully, her work bestie Charlotte takes matters into her own hands and books Avery on a 3 week vacation to the small town of Blue Grove, Oregon to gain some perspective. But what Avery doesn't expect is to run into a gorgeous man who ticks all the boxes she didn't know she had...

Hudson Waters appears to be all classic, rugged mountain man, but he's still raw with grief over the loss of his sister three years earlier. He doesn't let many people in, but the moment he meets Avery he can't keep himself away. The sizzle of attraction is clear to everyone in town, and more than one friendly local steps in to 'help'. Hudson and Avery have a choice to make; can they embrace three weeks together, knowing that it will end?

Thank you to Author @kelseys.corner.of.books for providing me with an ARC of this book. I was instantly sucked into the town of Blue Grove and wish I could vacation there too! The descriptions of the old buildings, the camaraderie of the community and the stunning nature scapes put me at ease and made it all feel so much more believable. Almost like watching a spicy version of a Hallmart movie 😉

I'm always a fan of main characters that have experienced trauma but evidence through their actions what a healthy healing process can look like. Grief and mental health struggles are messy, and showing this in a realistic way in books is so important. Both Avery and Hudson are great examples and I felt I understood their motivations so much more.

Congratulations to Author Kelsey Schulz again for such an incredible publication. It's available so I recommend you order right away 💜

I'm very much intimidated to write my review of Pictures In Blue by Kelsey Schulz. I just want to do her and her beautiful book justice!

Let's give it a try... here we go!

-content and trigger warnings up front
-movie references
-mountainy small town romance
-anxiety representation
-grief representation
-meddling/fairy Godmother townsfolk
-golden retriever love for days
-open door steamy scenes
-perfectly fitting character arcs
-Weather Girl (Rachel Lynn Solomon) vibes

I now have a thing for man buns, plaid, and lumberjacks (more than before). I feel represented in Avery (who does not give herself enough credit, but she is beginning to)! And there is a whole cast of characters in this quaint town that also have a part of my heart (hello Skylar).

If you connect at all with the quote, "You never lose by loving. You always lose by holding back." by Barbara De Angelis, you will connect with the beautiful love story Schulz created for Avery and Hudson.

The feeling I set out to find with my May TBR, I found in this book. When I look back on Summer 2023, I will transport back to my time spent in Blue Grove.

Is that enough to get you to pick up Pictures In Blue?

Thank you Kelsey Schulz for the complimentary copy to read and review and for letting me DM you as I read!

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review
[TW are listed in the book but include: death, cancer, grief, gaslighting, verbal abuse & self worth issues.]

In short: Read It!!

This book was so much more than “boy meets girl/they fall for each other/there is some sort of conflict/they find their way back to each other/the end book. (don’t get me wrong, I adore those books & I’m here for all the happily ever afters!)

Pictures in Blue speaks to the loss of a sister (parent, wife, daughter in law) and the heartbreaking grief they endure after her passing.
Pictures in Blue addresses a verbally abusive Mom & the affects of that abuse on the female MC (Avery) on her self-esteem,her job & relationships.
Pictures in Blue includes healing. The journey to find healing, the doubts, the second guessing & the freedom that can be found.

As I read this book I jotted down notes of things that stuck out to me.
- Grumpy/Sunshine
- Escape to a small town
- Cute nicknames (Dory & Nemo -adorbs!)
- Meddling Grandmother figures
- Baking, coffee & books!
- Dedicated friendships
- “Guess what? Chicken butt!”
- Quoting Princess Bride
- Man bun & flannel

If you want a swoon worthy (with a bit of spice 🌶️), book that give you all the big emotions, butterflies in your stomach, set in a perfect small town with a man-bun-flannel-wearing mountain man this is your book.

I am obsessed with Avery and Hudson! This is such a wholesome story that I needed to read.

I’ve been chasing the Gilmore Girls, small town vibes since I finished the show for the billionth time and this book checked off all the boxes.

The mischievous baker and inn owner playing match makers, the town grump, all the townies invested/meddling in the relationship, town meetings.

There are some heavy topics discussed in this book including but not limited to death, cancer, toxic parental relationships, self worth issues and anxiety/panic attacks on page.

To the contrary there is a lot of healing that happens in this book across many of the characters and ends leaving you feeling hopeful. (Hopeful for more blue grove content asap😅).

Thanks to Kelsey for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Immediately packing up to move to Blue Grove Mountain

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
🌶️
This debut book had me feeling all the butterflies and wanting to move to some small town in the middle of nowhere!!

Avery hates her life right now. She hates her job, she hates her boss, she hates how her mom makes her feel. One night her best friend books her a three week vacation in a cute small town in the middle of nowhere. Avery is excited to spend this time refocusing on what’s important, and hopefully finding herself again.
What she doesn’t expect is to fall in love with every aspect of the small town. She doesn’t expect the members of the small town to accept her so easily into their life. And she definitely doesn’t expect to find a grumpy, flannel wearing, rocking a man bun, mountain man.
After three years, Hudson is still struggling with the loss of his sister. He prefers solitude and the company of his 5 golden retrievers (yes you read that right 5 dogs). He isn’t expecting a literal ray of sunshine to find him. And he isn’t expecting the feelings she gives him. But she’s only in town for three weeks, and they can’t deny their attraction to one another. So they make an agreement to get have a fling for while she’s here, and then they’ll go their separate ways when it’s time for her to go. But what happens when he realizes three weeks is not enough time with her, and he wants more.

This was such a feel good book. I loved how patient Hudson and Avery were with each other. I loved how they helped each other through mental struggles. I LOVED how the town meddled in their relationship to get them together! I loved Hudson’s family.

If you want a low drama read, with no third act breakup, low spice but high on the butterflies, grumpy MMC that’s a secret cinnamon roll, this read is for you!!
Congratulations Kelsey on your debut book! Can’t wait to visit Blue Grove Mountain again!

If you are into small town romances with Gilmore Girls vibes, I highly recommend you check this one out!

Blue Grove is absolutely breathtaking, and the cast is truly endearing. This close-knit community is just so sweet and exactly what our girl Avery needs as she escapes her current unhappy work situation and her toxic relationship with her mother.

The town’s matchmaking antics add a delightful comical layer to the story, as they playfully scheme to unite Avery, the town visitor, with Hudson, the local grump. He wrestles with the heaviness of grief after losing his sister, a burden that’s pushed him into solitude, where he dedicates himself entirely to his family and his five golden retrievers.

The witty banter and well-intentioned meddling make for thoroughly entertaining moments, but what truly shines is the heartfelt journey of self-discovery and happiness for both Avery and Hudson.
While the story delves into heavy topics such as loss, toxic relationships, self-worth, and mental health, it’s balanced by an abundance of healing, love, and support throughout.

I don’t often pre-order books especially ones I haven’t read, but I had a good feeling about this one and I mean look at that cover, I had to! My only regret is that I should have read this sooner, I loved it and Kelsey has become and auto buy author. I’m so ready to visit Blue Grove anytime she will have us!

Kelsey. Freaking. Schulz. Where do I begin?

I’ll start off saying that I am much harder on rom-coms than I am other things. I am a high fantasy and romantasy reader through and through, with a rom-com mixed in here or there (beginning to be more often than that, but I digress)
All this to say, it really does take a fair amount to impress me with a rom-com. And this little gem blew me AWAY!

If you are a Gilmore Girls fan? Pick this up ASAP. Better yet, if you loved the Lovelight series by BK Borison? You’ve come to the right place. Kelsey created the most charming little world, full of so much character and love, it felt like being held in a warm hug for hours. I finished the first 65% of this novel in one sitting without even trying. It is so easy to blow through, because these characters feel so REAL from the first page.

I adored Avery & Hudson. Avery’s difficult relationship with her mother, and her subsequent struggles with mental health and consistent engagement in therapy were so well depicted. We got to see Avery working through and challenging her negative thoughts on page, and it was such a hopeful and inspiring thing to see. Hudson’s grief was handled with the same amount of care and detail, and I appreciated this aspect of the story SO much. The way these two connected and supported eachother had me quietly smiling all throughout (whenever I wasn’t outright laughing or swooning). Hudson is the perfect combination of sexy grump and deeply supportive cheerleader for the people he loves. He is the kind of LI I most adore reading about.

I just really think this story had everything I want in a rom-com. It had charm, humor, tension, depth, spice 🌶️ and absolutely heartwarming romance. And did I mention there is no third act breakup??? But still a completely satisfying climax for the plot? It’s all just *chefs kiss*

Endless thank you’s to Kelsey Schulz for the opportunity to read this eArc. You can bet I immediately ran to Amazon to preorder myself a physical copy. Make sure to pick this up or download it on Kindle Unlimited on 6/27!

I still have tears on my face as I'm writing this. #$#*$& this was so freaking cute. Like the sweetest gooey cinnamon goodness.

Avery is living an unhappy life in Malibu when her bff books her a trip to Blue Grove. Struggling with the trauma of being raised by a POS mom, she is still struggling with anxiety and panic attacks, and lacking confidence in herself.

Hudson is a sad lonely (but not like the ick kind) man that is a bit of a grump, and still mourning the loss of his sister. Living in a little cute little cabin with 5 golden retrievers ( i know right) he uses one word answers and is awkward.

Avery and Hudson are just dreamy. This was like watching a hallmark movie but way better! The cheesiest but most adorable story. And I was worried because I wouldn't usually choose something like this for myself, but it was supposed to be a buddy read that I accidentally finished in 2 days. i was grinning and kicking my feet cause this was so freaking cute, and I made sure to start recommending it to friends before I even finished it.

I’m. Obsessed.
One of the most sweetest, heartfelt loveable stories I’ve read in a long time. From the moment grumpy Hudson hit the page I was hooked. My heart just swoons for a grumpy lumberjack. Mix in some family drama, family heart break, anxiety and self esteem struggles and you have yourself this brilliant little number. Jamb packed with so much but nothing felt rushed.

I was getting some serious Sarah Adams writing style vibes so if you’re a fan of hers I promise you’ll love this little gem!

Thank you so much to @kelseys.corner.of.books for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series

This book is everything.

This was on my radar after one of my booksta friends raved about it last year (thank you, @wickedbeebooks 😊) and we chose to read it as a buddy read with our rep team over at Daily Book Recs for January. I am so happy I finally picked this one up because this might just be a new favorite romance book of mine. I loved gushing about it with @planted.library too! Hudson girlies for life 😮‍💨 petitioning for all MMC to have a man-bun, pls and thnx.

The characters are so real, so raw in their emotions, and so relatable and loveable. Hudson is dealing with heavy grief years after losing his sister. Avery is at a professional standstill and suffering under an extremely toxic mother. Together, these two find love, find happiness in the darkness, and find themselves along the way. It’s such a beautiful journey.

The small town of Blue Grove is lush with side characters that you’ll easily fall in love with. (I cannot wait for the companion novels to come out- I am SO excited for Sky’s story!) My favorites were Cordie and Fran!

If you love things like:
•found family
•small towns
•grumpy sunshine
•only one sleeping bag 😏
•anxiety rep/therapy rep
•grief rep
•MMCs in flannel
•MMCs in grey sweatpants 😏
•actual golden retrievers (5 of them!)
•Gilmore Girls vibes and references

…then I highly suggest picking up Picures in Blue!

Inspiring and heartfelt

This is a story about finding yourself and finding your voice. Living through grief and living through trauma. While Avery goes on the ultimate small-town trip to find herself and to relieve some of her pent-up exasperation with her job and her mother, Hudson is stuck in a grieving cycle he can't seem to break free from.

What starts as a casual notice of the handsome grumpy guy in town quickly evolves to a Stars Hollow level of whole-town shenanigans to force the two together. We love meddlesome side characters!

My favorite thing about these two is they genuinely made each other better. While one has to learn the definition of an anxiety attack from one, the other learns that all the words they've internalized about themself are wrong. They learn to create boundaries from toxic people and learn how to stand up for themself when they have a whole town to back them up.

In short, I love them, your honor.

She is in desperate need of a vacation and a purpose. He is a quiet man drowning in his grief. They need each other but just don't know it yet.

Avery Reid hates her job, works for her toxic ex, and has a narcissistic mother. When Avery's best friend forces Avery to take a 3 week vacation in a small Oregon town, Avery sees that this could be a break for her. When she first arrives in the town she cannot believe how lovely everyone is. This is the kind of place her heart has always wanted to be called home.

Hudson Waters grew up in his small town with a loving family. Unfortunately, his ideal world grew dim a few years ago when his sister died. Now the self proclaimed town "grump" he is content living in a big cabin with lots of dogs and solitude. When the human equivalent of sunshine visits his town he tries to ignore the pull he feels towards her.

Avery loves this town. Even when the grumpy Hudson is giving her his cold shoulder, she can see that this town holds a lot of love. Over time, the new people she meets scheme to get her alone with Hudson over and over again. Unfortunately, it works and Avery finds herself kicked out of her accomodations and staying in Hudson's beautiful home. Avery and Hudson both try to set a boundary to leave each other alone knowing anything between them could only ever be temporary. But they can only ignore their shared attraction for so long before boundaries and crossed without much remorse.

Dual POV, grumpy/sunshine, emotionally abusive parent, living through grief**,
open door love scenes.

This book felt fast. Maybe because the slow burn abruptly upended into insta-love. In three weeks, the MCs change almost everything about themselves, mostly for the better. This small town is nosy and manipulative but not annoying about it. Avery's mother is just about as horrible as a narcissist person can be. If you are sensitive about comments about body image from a parent, as well as physical insecurities, the subject matter is live on page. Fortunately, Hudson does a great job helping Avery through those moments. Hudson is a tall, handsome, flannel wearing MMC with a man bun. He is gone for his girl super quickly and it's charming. These MCs are cliche in their small details that make them perfect for each other but it's a cute trope. These two make each other better by being together. Sweet HEA and Epilogue.

**Trigger Warnings

"AUTHOR’S NOTE: Content and Trigger Warnings: Panic attacks on page, verbal abuse (parental), body dysmorphia, sibling death (flashback), gaslighting (parental) This is an open door romance, so the content may not be suitable for some readers. There are multiple scenes depicting consensual sex and intimacy. There is also coarse language and swearing throughout the book."

Oh, how I love this book! Kelsey writes so beautifully, I wanted to crawl into this book and live there.
Avery needs a break from her job, so her best friend books her a reservation at a little inn in the small town of Blue Grove, Oregon for a few weeks to reset and reassess her life. She’s instantly taken with the town and the people in it. It has major Stars Hollow vibes, so who wouldn’t be?
Hudson is the local town grump. Years after his sister’s death, he’s still dealing with his grief. He cares about his family, his dogs, and some of the townspeople, and that’s enough for him. He’s a flannel-wearing dog dad with a man bun who carves dog figurines out of wood from trees he chops down himself. So in my opinion, he’s pretty freaking dreamy, even though I would have to take a ton of allergy pills to live with him.
Avery and Hudson are drawn to each other from the first time their paths cross. They both kind of fight it at first, and even agree to stay away from one another, which leads to some meddling from basically the entire town that forces them to share Hudson’s house. It’s really game over from there and they figure maybe they’ll just get this thing out of their systems and move on when it’s time for Avery to leave.
They’re both dirty liars. That was never going to happen, and they know it. But it’s cute that they tried.
I loved so many things about this book. How Hudson’s family immediately accepted Avery as one of their own, even before Avery and Hudson accepted themselves as a real couple. How Hudson took care of Avery when she was hurt, but also when she spiraled. How Avery was there for Hudson when he has a panic attack. How Hudson and Avery’s best friend were there to help her deal with her mom. When Hudson made Avery lemon bars, how Hudson is with his nephew, how Avery didn’t shy away from the fact that Hudson has 5 dogs… I loved it all.

Open door but not super spicy. Awesome side characters who need their own stories (I’m assuming this is happening in the future 😉)

Things you’ll find in this book:
He’s the local town grump
She’s just visiting
Stars Hollow vibes
He has 5 dogs

Only one sleeping bag
Caretaking
She’s his sunshine
Anxiety and therapy rep

“I am lost. Completely and utterly lost. To her. Since the day she walked into town, I haven’t been able to find my way. I’ve been traveling a path leading to the middle of nowhere. But my destination is her. It’s always been her and I was an idiot to ever think otherwise.”

I loved every single thing about this book. A small town, forced proximity, meddling people in the town who think they know better (and they of course do!!), a guy who falls HARD and fast, a two week arrangement that turns way more serious than either of them planned, a close knit family. Avery and Hudson made my heart so full!!

I LOVE HUDSON AND AVERY! Their chemistry and their banter and their inability to stay away from each other was amazing! Yes the whole town was scheming to get them together but it’s because they were the only two that couldn’t see how much they liked each other!! Avery was scared to take the leap because she was leaving! And even though this town felt more like home than anywhere before, she was still so unsure. But Hudson was not going to let her go anywhere!

Both Avery and Hudson were written with a lot of good mental health rep. Avery has anxiety, panic attacks and really low self esteem from years of abuse from her horrid mother. And Hudson is still deeply grieving his sister and has panic attacks. I think both of them were written so well and with a lot of care. And even Elias’ backstory with his family and how far he’s come with that, and his grief were written well. Avery goes to therapy and while she very much still struggles with her relationship with her mother, she’s working on it and finding things that help her! And Hudson is working a little slower to find peace, but with the help of Avery it’s a little bit easier.

I cannot wait for the rest of the series!! I love little hints that authors write that point to maybe where the next books are headed! And if I read the hints right I am SO EXCITED!

Thank you so much to Kelsey Schulz for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

🪻Small town
🪻Grumpy Hero x Sunshine
🪻Mental Health & Therapy Rep
🪻Meddling Neighbours
🪻Forced Proximity

I’m absolutely all-in on small town romances, especially when they involve a hot grump, an out of towner, meddling townspeople, cute dogs, and otherworldly descriptions of nature. I loved “Pictures in Blue” for all of those reasons and the fact that it beautifully dealt with themes of grief, family toxicity, and anxiety.

Avery was so well-written. The way she had to come to terms with the impact her relationship with her mother had on how she let herself be treated in all aspects of her life was really impactful. She constantly searched for the love and validation she didn’t get from her mom, and also never felt like she was worthy of it.

Of course, Hudson was a damn dream. The man wasn’t only a sexy lumberjack-y grump, but was dealing with his own grief which made him closed off, had a soft spot for Golden Retrievers, and was a natural caretaker (he baked Avery’s favorite lemon bars and washed her hair and protected her by propping her up). This man fell first and fell hard, and it was so delicious to read. The communication between the two was great and the way they supported each other by being vulnerable was beautiful. Their chemistry and banter made me smile and giggle the whole time.

The Gilmore Girls and Princess Bride references, the incredible side characters, and the Waters family dynamics were top tier. Pick this up if you want something incredibly swoony and perfectly spicy. This has Lovelight Farms vibes through and through. I hope we get to go back to Blue Grove Mountain!

💙 Pictures in Blue by Kelsey Schulz 💙

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Space: 🌶️.5

Characterization: 4/5
Plot/Storyline: 3/5
Writing Style: 5/5

💙 - Avery needs a break from her life in Malibu where her job sucks, her boss sucks, and her relationship with her mother, well, you guessed it, sucks. Her best friend books a three week stay several hours north in the mountains, and what starts as a personal self-retreat quickly becomes more than Avery bargained for when she meets Hudson. A grieving, loving, and lumberjack (not really!) of a man who’s helps Avery see the good in life again, just as she helps him to see past his loss.

💙 - Avery is fantastic — she represents a truly anxious person and seeing a panic attack accurately depicted with good discussion of how to relieve those moments as everything. Grounding technique and positive mental health reps are what we need to read more of in this world. Hudson is the perfect gentleman, and while I love his and Avery’s tension (slooooow burrrrrrn for the win!), I wish he was less perfect — I like raw and edgy and flawed more, but I’ll settle for a Luke Danes impersonate too.

💙 - OH GOOD GOLLY THE MOVIE REFERENCES! Kelsey and I could be best friends with our similar taste in movies. Princess Diaries, Shrek, Princess Bride - oh my! The pop culture wasn’t too forced and this book was clearly written for older millennials, and I appreciate that so much. The tension is great; the spice is minimal; and the great outdoors have never been as majestic.

Final Recommendation: For a Stars Hallow meet PNW vibe, READ. The humor embedded throughout is solid too.

I stumbled across this book when I saw @inkandlaurel post the cover and I was SOLD. I downloaded it on my kindle and admittedly didn’t read it for the longest time. But eventually when it was exactly the right time I DEVOURED this book. I’m talking finished it in less than 36 hours type of thing.

Synopsis: Avery is burnt out in more ways than one and to save her, her coworker/bff spontaneously books her a three week stay at a charming inn in small town Oregon. Avery shows up to find the sweetest little Gilmore Girls-esque town full of its own cast of meddling characters and a town grump, Hudson Waters. Hudson is still grieving the death of his sister and doesn’t expect to feel anything when he meets Avery. But despite his reservations, he finds himself only wanting to be around her, a problem because Avery’s time in Blue Grove is limited.

I loved the honesty and big emotions in this book. The characters are going through it big time and as a reader, you can’t help but to feel for them and cheer them on. By the time you get your HEA, it feels all the more special.

My favorite part hands down was grumpy Hudson who was really just a big sweetheart with a soft heart.

Fran/Cordie, the meddling old ladies, were probably my second favorite part! They were the comic relief and levity that balanced the book so well.

I love that this is only the first in a series and we get to visit Blue Grove, Oregon again soon 💜

(But also, that cover y’all! I think it’s maybe one of my favorites @inkandlaurel has created.)

4.5 Pictures in Blue, Kelsey Schulz’s debut, is such a beautiful story! See beginning of the book for content warnings.

Blue Grove is a beautiful setting. I could vividly see the picturesque mountains in my mind as I read. The people there are so welcoming, it didn’t take long for the town to feel like home for Avery.

Hudson and Avery’s attraction was apparent from the moment they first saw each other. Their chemistry was among the best I’ve ever read and I rooted for them throughout the entire story. They were both so supportive of each other, encouraging the other to open up, but never pushing too hard or making them uncomfortable. They helped each other grow so much.

I absolutely LOVED the side characters! Cordie and Fran are like everyone’s surrogate grandmothers, and while meddling busybodies usually annoy me, I couldn’t help but love it here. I can’t wait to read what they do in Skyler and Jacob’s story. And Charlotte? I think she’s gotta be my favorite supporting character ever! She’s exactly the kind of friend Avery needed and I really hope she gets her own book.

This is definitely one of my favorite small town romances and I cannot wait for Artfully Wild!

4.5/5

Avery Reid is at a standstill in her life and her job as a newspaper reporter isn’t the career she’d thought it’d be. When her best friend books Avery a 3-week stay in Blue Grove, Oregon, this change of view just might show her what exactly she needs. ⠀

Hudson Waters lives a quiet life in Blue Grove, his hometown. Dubbed “the town grump,” when Avery comes to town, also comes the temptation to push that “grump” status aside. ⠀

Y’all, if you want some spice, some amazing banter and characters you will fall in love with as soon as you meet them, this is the romance novel for you! The way Kelsey describes the areas in her novel, I felt I was right there with the characters and even made me wish I had someone who’d book ME a trip to the mountains! ⠀

This novel will be released JUNE 27, 2023! ⠀

Thank you so much to Kelsey for allowing me access to a copy of the ARC! I can’t wait for the rest to come in this series!

Unhappy with her job in Malibu and anxious over her toxic relationship with her mother, Avery is near her breaking point. Her best friend senses her desperation and books her a getaway to a small Oregon town. Enter the town grump she meets, followed by his family of golden retrievers. Avery comes to love the new town and its occupants, except her stay has an expiration date.

This was an enjoyable small town romance and I found myself relating to the FMC over her anxiety. I also love me a grumpy man bun man 😂

I think I just didn’t vibe with this book because the connection between Avery and Hudson felt a little insta love to me. They are instantly drawn to each other and I never understood fully their reasoning other than pure attraction. And then suddenly, it’s boom I love this person!

I also think the narration told us everything, rather than showed us naturally as the story progressed.

I will say the side characters were divine and this is a town I want to live in!

This book has:
✔️ grumpy sunshine
✔️small town romance

TW: cancer, death of a loved one

this was insta-lovey, but honestly it still worked for me!

“Team Edward or Team Jacob?” She asks and I sigh, wondering how we got here.
“Team Charlie.”

Hudson is a man after my own heart! Charlie Swan could get it.

He places a hand on the back of my neck and slowly pulls me closer. So slowly, it feels like the slow-mo feature is on. His head dips and he draws a line from the left side of my jaw with his nose, down to my chin, over my lips, until we are nose to nose, our shared breath mingling with the water falling between us.

*Swoons*

I loved the tension between Avery and Hudson, and seeing them figure things out. I loved the side characters as well! Small town Gilmore Girls vibes, with meddling little old ladies and a supportive family and group of friends.

I'm very excited for the next book in the Blue Grove Mountain series, Artfully Wild, which will be about Skylar and her best friend Jacob! Best friends to lovers is my FAV!
