Classic / British English Only the Woman in White knows the truth of Laura Fairlie's cruel husband. Can Walter Hartwright discover the terrible secret? From the moment Walter meets this mysterious woman, his future and that of Laura are linked forever.
Previously, I gave 3 stars for this book, but today when I listened to the audio and read it again, I found the story more interesting than before. For this reason, I increased the rating from 3 to 4 stars. I'm happy because my understanding of English is improving little by little. When I first listened to the audio and read this adapted and abridged text for foreign students, I found the book difficult to understand, but today I found it much easier.
This book is a good story book for improving english. I used to read it just for learning new words;but it also has an interesting process which excites many of teenagers.
Given that this mystery was written in the 1850's, I think it is great. It's a little long winded, but since I listened on Audible with the lovely British voices, I was entertained by every word. I loved the multiple voice viewpoint, too, since I am currently working on a novel with several voices telling the story.
this abriged version moves on with the events very very fast but this book was good company. The story is interesting and the relationship between Anne, Marian and Laura is full of suspense. I wish i had the unabriged version to get more of the details.
Wilkie Collins did not disappoint! I found this book to be every bit as enjoyable as The Moonstone. Once again, I enjoyed the use of multiple narrators throughout the book. A wonderfully long story that kept me interested the whole way through, and made me sorry it had ended. Loved it!
It was the first book i ever read in english, it was a good start. I know it was adapted to make it an easier journey to english learners, but still Anne Collins could have done better. The story was highly summed up, she turned a 600-ish pages book into a 90 pages book. Of course it didnt turn out well. The facts happens too fast and there is no time to feel or to bond to a certain circumstances and characters. But as a book meant for english learners, the task is done well. There were various words i didnt know (which i think its great, cause i learn a lot) and sometimes the vocabulary section didnt have a certain word i needed, but it is ok. I loved the questions, it makes us connect more to the story and reflect on it. About the plot, amazing! Sir Percival is such a horrible human being, i am happy he got what he deserved. I would love to read the original version one day, but for now 600 pages in english is too much (especially if we consider that one out of 10 words will be unknown for me). After i finished reading this book, i started reading Charles Dickens' Hard Times. God, how can there be that aboundance of different words?
I reread this one now and again - it's well written, a good length, and it pulls off a really unique story and style for the time it was written. It also wraps up a lot of details that many modern authors most likely would have just skimmed over, such as why the two women look so very similar, and it doesn't take the easy routes through the mystery, but twists and turns pretty relentlessly through the course of the book. I can only imagine how desperate people would have been to read the next few chapters as it was originally released in serial form - especially the second half of the book where the action is really moving fast.

This one felt all of its 25hrs 47mins on audio. I nearly gave up on it because it was slow and confusing, but it did get better after they finally got close to discovering the secrets involved. I did like that there were different narrators for the different character's accounts.
I can understand why almost all of the reviews were of abridged versions, but it was worth it in the end to read the unabridged.
Terribly boring. Would give it 2 stars but i'm a sucker for british classics. I'm sure the original book is way better and more interesting but this small "adaptation" managed to make it lose its charm. Though I didn't enjoy this one, I'm looking forward to read the original version.
this novel is about a mystery. There is a man named Walter Hartright fell in love with a woman named Laura when he taught two young women,Marian and Laura, in Cumberland. However, she engaged with Sir Percival Glyde who are twenty older than Laura. Walter's feeling was retuned, and then he leaved and Laura married. Also, there is a woman in white Anna who claimed Percival is a bad gay and she knew a terrible secret about him. after Laura married, her husband's temper was worse and worse, and he tearted her wife and her badly. Laura's half-sister Marian found Percival just wanted to get the money from Laura to peotect his business and had a plan that using dead of the woman in white to cheat people Laura died because Anna looks like Laura. However, Walter eventually found the Percival's secret which was forging his parents' marriage because he wanted to be rich. finally, Percival didn't get what he wanted, and Walter and Laura married.
I was initially put off by the size of this book. I made a big mistake and watched the films first. They do not do the book justice. It is everything a Gothic novel needs- country houses, madness, Bryonic Hero, a woman with strength beyond the limits of her time, and a villain so delicious most of my book club though we should rename the book. To enjoy this book I think it's important to place in history, especially in regards to Feminism and generational wealth. There is so much to comment on and so many ways to examine this book. Yes it's long but when you finish the book you do understand why. I do believe it didn't need all the storyline however next time it's made into the film please stop adding things . It's beautifully well written the way it is.
