This is the first ever book I've read on palmistry, and it actually came recommended by my palmistry teacher and got glowing reviews on Amazon.co.uk. So I was open-minded and optmistic about it before starting.
What I liked about this book:
- It's well laid out, clearly written and easy to follow.
- It covers a LOT of subjects in a manner that isn't too overwhelming despite covering a lot of things.
- It contains a lot of great palm print examples to help visualize the signs.
- The book feels like it's well-researched, often quoting other prominent palmist's interpretations and thoughts on hand signs, and using personal research (ie personal experience in palm reading) to solidify the information.
. . .
Room for improvement:
- Most important of all, although some of the interpretations felt intuitively "right", other times they didn't. I didn't always resonate with the meanings the book gave for signs that I found on my own hand and in the hands of friends/ relatives that I looked at... although I openly admit that there is a chance this may be partly due to my inexperience in reading hands and not knowing which trait of the list of possible traits to apply and which to disregard for a sign on a particular hand. Unfortunately this left me with a feeling of "I don't know if I can trust every interpretation this book gives."
- The book contained zero photos of hands, only containing hand ink prints. I felt that photos of hands would have been useful additional illustrations since palmistry involves looking at the actual hand as well as looking at prints.
- Sometimes it felt like a hand sign was assigned a list of properties without having much logic behind it; just a list to memorise. eg stuff like this: "When finger spacing is examined, when the index finger is separate from the middle finger it can mean: self-determining, like to be in charge". This makes it really hard to internalise and remember. I'm going to palmistry classes at the moment and our teacher there ties much more logical connections between the signs which makes it easier to understand and remember things than the book does. eg for the same example I gave earlier, our class notes would be more like this: "When finger spacing is examined, when the index finger (the finger that relates to the self), is greatly separated from the middle finger (the finger which relates to society / parents / authority), it is a sign that the "self" wants freedom from the society. ie freedom of thought is important to them. They have their own opinions and want to express them." The latter is easier to remember than just remembering a list of qualities.
- The book was written in a form like this: "When we have this sign, we tend to like this and this". I know, this is a bit pernickety of me, but all this personal, inclusive "we" business, where "we" was used to describe completely opposite signs in the same breath, bugged me. I would have prefered a more professional, impersonal, detached tone like "People who have this sign tend to like this and this".
Bottom line:
A generally good beginner's book covering a lot of material. But I suspect it may not be the absolute best palmistry book out there.
