Beth is focused on teaching women all over the world and is known and respected wherever she goes. Beth is one of the best known women in the evangelical Christian market.
I read this as part of a Bible study group at my church. I was disheartened with how often we were told to try and imagine why a person did or said a certain thing. On page 74 we are asked, "What do you think Paul might have wanted to know?" and "Based on your impressions, why do you think Barnabas might have insisted on taking John Mark on the journey?" and "In your opinion, was Paul being too hard on John Mark?"
An occasional question like that might be productive, but a constant barrage of this kind of thinking puts the reader in a position of too much authority over scripture. How can our suppositions of what might be true compare to the rich, clear teachings of Scripture, which are absolute truth?
To be fair, Beth's remarks and questions in the book are balanced by a lot of scripture reading, but I noticed that in our weekly meetings, most people focused on the hypothetical questions and often offered wacky insights into a Bible character's motivations because they had been primed to do so by the lesson itself.
I cannot believe I actually finished this one. I was SOOOOO tempted not to. It's definitely the hardest study I've ever done. It was totally an exercise in faithfulness.
We did this study in our women's Bible study last year. I did every single lesson, left no blank unfulfilled - yet I wondered why I was getting so little out of this study. I didn't think it dull; but at the end of the study, I felt as though I'd simply taken a history course in school.
I realized later that there were two reasons why the study had this effect on me personally (because the same thing happened again after we did Moore's Jesus, the one and only - Member Book. First, the study is set up in such a way that one is very much spoon fed select material - that is, the author's impressions of what the scripture is revealing (and don't get me wrong, Moore is a gifted teacher. I appreciate her insights). But she only holds a piece of the puzzle, and it's much richer I find to have open-ended questions or very little prompt at all; rather, inductive study of the text itself.
But the main reason I felt this and Jesus the One and Only didn't hit me on a deeper level is that nowhere is found the declaration, "This is for you. This is for today. This is what YOU are to be doing as Paul did, as Christ Himself did under the anointing of the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38). Preaching, teaching, healing people, and casting out demons. This is the gospel of the kingdom that Christ preached, and then Paul. This is what was modeled. Now, what is impeding you?"
Rather than studying history, we are to be going out with Him right now like Paul did, on the offense, taking the kingdom by "healing the sick, raising the dead, casting out demons, and cleansing lepers" (Matt. 10:8). Who's in?
I can't put my finger exactly on what it is, but I didn't find this study as powerful or impactful as other Beth Moore Bible studies. I enjoyed it, and I learned a great deal about Paul, but for some reason, I felt like something was missing. Maybe if I had heard Beth teach it live, and I hadn't just read it, that would have made a difference.
We decided not to watch the videos that go with this. We just completed the homework each week and discussed it. I felt this was a good way to make it more personal to me.
I did this study with my 19, 11 and 8 year old and it was one of the best studies we have ever done together. What a beautiful thing to have Jesus change our hearts and grow us closer to HIM together! This was a beautiful study!!!
This is a deep study of the life of Paul. There is a lot to learn and a lot of reading from the text and the Bible. Take your time and read all of the passages of scripture or you'll miss the point.
Finished the last week's homework of this Bible study today. It was so awesome to learn more about Paul, his life, and his teachings. I learned a lot through this study. I do wish it had been updated, being from the 90s made the video seem quite old. I hate saying that since I was in high school in the 90s so it doesn't seem like it should be that long ago! But the core matter is what's important and it was really good! Since it was one of Beth's first studies and I have done recent Moore studies as well, it seems like she has changed a lot too in her writing which was neat to see as well. I hope to continue to do more studies and fighting the good fight!
Absolutely awesome study of Paul. This is the first Beth Moore bible study that I have done and I absolutely loved it. Not only did I learn so much about the Apostle Paul, but I read so much scripture too because she has you all over the place in the Bible! It's a great thing! I picked up a copy of the hardcover book with the same title and am looking forward to just reading Paul's story. I've also already picked up another of Beth Moore's books and am sure that I will be reading many, many more.
Our Bible study group completed this 10 week study on the life of Paul tonight. The study covers the book of Acts and Paul's epistles - covers Paul's 3 mission trips and the final trip to Rome and imprisonments. It was a phenomenal study and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in an in-depth study and willing to put in the time. If you've done Beth Moore studies you know you have your work cut out for you with a good 5 days of homework (about an hour each day), plus weekly discussion, fellowship and an hour DVD. Be blessed and take this study.
I have learned so much as a result of this study. It takes time and persistence but is well worth it. Every week was filled with new insights about God, His Word, and faithful Paul. Our small group really enjoyed this study because it was so scripture based rather than based on a certain subject. Reading about Pauls life from birth to death is very motivating, convicting, and interesting. I will definately refer back to this study over and over again.
Once again, Moore reveals more about the apostle Paul and his life from the Scriptures. She is wonderful at providing background and word studies. Paul's fervor for God is a central feature of the study; I found every chapter to be challenging and engaging. Reading the Scriptures she discusses also adds to the study of Paul's life.
The life of Paul is very controversial. I am not a lover of him generally however, Beth Moore helped me see his good and bad. His life went from one extreme to another, but in the middle he was able to spread the gospel and try and be an example of what we should/could be. He is still a very opinionated fellow, but at least willing to die for his convictions. Most are not.
A Bible study isn't exactly the same as other books, but it takes a lot of reading! I'm loving this study, I think I might be turning into a Beth Moore fan. She brings the Bible alive and makes you want to dig into it more, to learn more from the source itself.
This is a great study...very involved/time consuming, as most Beth Moore studies are, but it gave me a new perspective on the life of Paul, especially in relation to current world events.
Excellent study on the life of Paul. Not only will you get to know Paul better, but you'll become closer to the reason for Paul's life and ministry - Jesus.
I undertook this study before going on a tour of the Apostle Paul’s travel in Greece. I took my time going through it and worked at my own pace. I love doing Beth’s studies like that. No rushing. Time to reflect and truly apply the material. I can’t express how many times the study goes along with my life and what’s happening around me and with me. So many parallels. I believe her studies were meant to be savored.
To be honest, I didn’t finish this study (finished 80%). I wanted to go back to it just to finish it, but I couldn’t. A lot of the questions were too hypothetical or about reflecting on assumptions of Paul’s feelings. I did like tracing Paul’s missionary journeys on the map though!
3.8. I love the older Beth Moore studies, but this one isn’t my favorite. This one is full of history. There’s a lot of work to the homework but a good study on the life of Paul. You’ll do a lot of scripture searching and some of the questions are really hard for reflection, but still a good study - especially if you do it with a great group of friends. This would be hard to do on your own. An accountability group was great while doing this study. You’ll also want to make sure to utilize the dvd sessions as they contribute a lot more to the study.
Really enjoyed this study. I did it by myself and I learned so much. Paul is an incredible figure and this book does him justice. Complete with maps of his journeys. Highly recommend this study to anyone either in a group or by themselves.
