Really couldn’t warm to the main character Scott and didn’t think the story had enough depth and feeling to be about siblings. Not wanting to spoil the story, there is a particular section where Scott comes up with an idea to get his brother speaking again, that seems to go off the rails and go out of character where I just couldn’t wait for it to be over. Wasn’t a great read for me.
This one was a blind pick from a recent thrift store visit, so wasn't really sure what I was getting into. An ok read, but didn't really connect with or feel for any of the characters, and the storyline was just kinda meh for me.
It was a blind buy and I didn't expect to like it so well. It was a swift and throughly enjoyable read. I can imagine it would make a very wholesome and funny movie.
I read this book cover to cover in bed last night. I bought it because I was told that it is a lot like Mike Gayle's writing. It was definitely funny and easy to read, like Gayle's books and I'll look into more books by the same guy. The bit with the Penguin is hilarious and I had such a hard time trying not to wake my husband up while I laughed. Don't worry, mentioning the penguin thing doesn't spoil anything.
Oh and a side note, I bought the book 2nd hand and it's autographed by the author to some guy named Ken!
This book saved me when i had a day to kill in Edinburgh by myself with a huge case I didn't want to drag around and a storm outside. I sat in a cafe with a muffin and my bottle of water and let the hours pass. It is not a typical book for me to read but I enjoyed it and would recommend it! It is funny and you can really see things from Scott Barron's perspective. It was like reading a typical romance but from a guys perspective and with less romance. Which was great because it can get a bit tiring after a while. This book actually has an interesting plot while keeping it light and funny!
Good on him for trying to subvert the idea that it's only women who suffer from poor body image and comfort eating, but the theme is never developed enough to be a major breakthrough, just a bit of lip service, and there's enough booze 'n' fighting to make the lads feel at home.
The penguin thing is sweet but a bit gimmicky and the navel gazing goes on just a bit too much, but nice all the same.
I ended up enjoying this book a lot more than I thought I would! Witty and funny it was exactly what I needed, a nice light read that made me laugh out loud. I wasn't very intrigued by the plot but I still enjoyed the story and didn't think it was at all predictable. All in all, I'm glad I picked it up. :)
This is a hilarious story about two brothers who hate each other, an overbearing mother, and a father who abandoned them all. I think I might have cried a little, but laughed a lot (out loud actually). I love a good book about a dysfunctional family.
Nice, quick little easy read.Lad Lit with a bit of brains and feeling. Not laugh out loud funny as some people have suggested, but a few chuckles if that's what you're after. Fans of Mike Gayle will enjoy it.
