Edward Eyre is only 24 years old but he's already established a reputation as a successful overlander. The Governor of South Australia offers him the opportunity to lead a northern expedition deep into No Mans Land.
After a huge farewell ceremony, the journey encounters a massive salt lake which prevents any further progress. Eyre is forced to admit defeat, but his pride refuses to return to Adelaide as a failure. Instead, he decides to make a westward attempt across the Nullarbor Desert – one of the most inhospitable landscapes on earth. Those who dare to enter her territory will soon discover to their peril that she is unconquerable, she favours no race, and she fears no flag.
This was fiction based on fact which I personally found made it all the more interesting. I loved the attention to detail that brought the scenes and the characters to life. I was truly transported to another time and place while I read this book. It's definitely a book that captures your imagination and gives you a glimpse of what it must have been like to take on such a mission in the blistering heat of outback Australia. The characters were each unique and well developed. A story well told, very down to earth with just a hint of the mystical. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a good story that's also capable of delivering some insight to how life was for some of these brave explorers and natives of that era.
