This book is a collection of selected writings on Buddhist meditation. It is split up into three sections; Ancient Teachings, Modern Teachings, and Amateur Reports. I don't think that's exactly how they're titled but that's how it is laid out. There were a number of essays in the first two sections that were invaluable to my then burgeoning understanding of meditation, and the final and smallest section was interesting. It is a pretty expensive book; I got a copy out of the library, which was great...but it is not a common book. If your library does not have it, I would recommend buying it (or trying to get them to buy it) even if you cannot find it used. It is the best overall book on meditation I have encountered. The selections vary greatly, but the similarities become increasingly apparent as the work progresses. This led me to an understanding of the fundamental aspects of meditation in a way which no singly-authored book on the subject could.
