In the System #4

Overlord of the Dungeon

Rate this book
MP3 CD Format The Leviathan is dead. Humanity has won the global mission but the price has been too high. Japan is in ruins, Honshu lies partially underwater, and the capital has been destroyed. The country has been left without leadership and tens of millions have perished, while monsters continue to hunt down the survivors.

Ivan Susanin heads to the submerged Toyo as part of an expedition to find the missing raven, help evacuate the civilians and slay as many monsters as possible. And that's only on the surface. He has successfully learned to combine the public good, national interests and his personal goals a long time ago.

But life is full of surprises. A discovered card gives Ivan the right to become Overlord of the Dungeon, an isolated location somewhere on another world. However, he's far from the only contender, and the goblins who inhabit these tunnels have their own plans. Strength alone won't be enough to claim victory this time.

Although an avid reader from an early age, Petr had never tried to write a book himself until he began his IT studies. This is when he discovered Russia’s biggest online writing community, Samizdat. His first book received a warm welcome from his online readership and Petr even got a letter from a traditional publisher showing interest in his book. But when Petr accepted their proposal, he didn’t receive a reply. He never heard from them again.

A few years later, already an IT professional, Petr wrote another book and sent the manuscript out to publishers. This time, it was rejected. In those days, writers were only considered “proper authors” if they worked with traditional publishers; all others were branded as amateurs.

For the next five years, Petr didn’t write much but did a lot of reading instead. That’s why the arrival of the new genre of LitRPG, followed by RealRPG, immediately piqued his interest. A few more years down the road, and Petr realized it was probably the right moment to get back into writing. If it didn’t work now, then he’d call it a day.

By then, Russia had seen the arrival of online writing portals which allowed authors to sell their books directly to their readers, bypassing traditional publishing houses. Petr quit his day job and started a new book. This time it was RealRPG. Readers immediately noticed his City of Goblins, leaving thousands of comments and positive rankings. The following installments consolidated his success, securing the new series’ place among the leaders of the new genre.

They say that three is a charm – it certainly was for Petr, who can now pursue his passion for writing full time. And now you too have a unique opportunity to read his books in other languages.

book four

Mistakes: While the translation from Russian to English has some rough spots it’s an easy read. Mistakes have been listed on GoodReads and will probably be corrected.

Plot: Some politics, some adventures, and growing his personal power base.

Characters: While it can seem like the mc is a puppet of the power hungry in charge of Russia in the story, close attention should be paid to the fact that he only shows what is not easily hidden to those in charge. I think it’s only a matter of time before the mc is able to break away from Russia and start his own empire. Weather he can do better than the greed that seems to plague not only Russia but also the U.S.A will have to be seen.
Or maybe I just read to deeply into the story.

Good but a bit too patriotic for an apocalypse system book

This book was good. However, I am a bit disappointed with how easily Vasily is willing to be under the control of the government especially with the apocalypse type of environment. I mean, he wins rewards from the system, but then pretty much hands it over to the government. I don’t know how realistic this is.

Apart from this, I enjoyed the book

Good series

Enjoyable series with a rough translation. I love the goblins in this world. Great goblin dungeon. A little to much filler of irrelevant military stuff at times I hop the next book is longer.

Another good addition to the series, it definitely an interesting read with the alternate timeline with Russia and US seitching government types and system apocalypse.

KU Review

Been awhile since I read the last but it came right back to me and I read 4 and 5 back to back. Pace slowed down a bit as the focus stayed on the Earth side of the conflict more. Great storytelling and such a fun rpg system.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

Book ended at 88%!

So I wasn't terribly disappointed in the book although the cover art was less than accurate and the story ends at 88%. Those are both pretty significant disappointments. The story has really slow growth rate and I guess you always have to wait and see where it go I guess you always have to wait and see where it goes

Another decent book but the author's constant reigning in of the MC is starting to get frustrating. Over and over there are excuses why the MC isn't leveling up. Why? Just to drag it out and keep the MC from getting OP? Fine, but there has to be PLAUSIBLE reasons. No reasons are given. The MC even comes right out and says "I don't want to level up so I'm going to dump my XP into a basket weaving skill instead." WTF? WHY!?
