Chansons pour elle et autres poèmes érotiques

Rate this book

About the author

Paul Verlaine

Paul-Marie Verlaine was a French poet associated with the Symbolist movement. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry.

Despite Rimbaud admiring his poetry, these poets had a stormy affair which led to Verlaine's incarceration after shooting Rimbaud. This incident indirectly preceded his re-conversion to Roman Catholicism.

Verlaine's last years were particularly marked by alcoholism, drug addiction and poverty.

His poems have inspired many composers, such as Chopin, Fauré and Poldowski.

Art Poétique describes his decadent style and alludes to the relevance of nuances and veils in poetry.

I love you least in silken gown,
And I detest your veil drawn down,
A cloud across your eyes, my skies;
Your bustle I abominate,
Distortion to exaggerate
The splendour of your gorgeous thighs.

I am the foe of every dress
Which hides or covers, more or less,
Those charms the sweetest that I know:
Your throat — my chief delight lies there! —
Your shoulders, and the roguish pair
Of soft enchantments found below.

Fie on a woman overdressed!
In your chemise I like you best,
That altar-cloth for love's own right,
That playful hindrance, kindly cloak,
That Jolly Roger always struck
At night and dawn, at dawn and night.
