Rate this book
“A profound spiritual exploration into the life and work of the beloved poet Kahlil Gibran, a much-needed guide for our times.” –Reza Aslan, author of The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth

In Search of a Prophet is a fascinating journey through the spiritual life of Kahlil Gibran, the great Lebanese-American poet and author of The Prophet, a book originally published in 1923 that has sold over 10 million copies and been translated into dozens of languages. Capturing our imaginations and enriching our spirits, Paul-Gordon Chandler explores this beloved writer and artist, a celebrated mystic who sought to build bridges and tear down walls and who remains a cultural icon among all people of goodwill. This is not a traditional biography but a compelling spiritual journey through Gibran’s writings, art, and the places he lived. From Gibran’s birthplace village high in the snowy mountains of Lebanon, Chandler leads us through his immigration to Boston, art training in Paris, and career in New York, and to the far-reaching places of influence his writings and art have traveled, alerting readers to Gibran’s continuing relevance for today.

This paperback edition, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the publication of The Prophet, includes a foreword by Bishop Michael B. Curry, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, as well as a new preface by the author.

A heartfelt philosophical biography of Gibran that uncritically examines the growth and scope of his thought. Anexcellent introduction to the person behind the prophet, there are glimpses of great spiritual depths on every page.

The book spreads hatred against Islam

I normally have a signed copy form the author in my had and purchased this book with a high expectation of reading something good about Kahlil Gibran but surprised a lot when I saw the content. The author makes false assumptions about Sufisms and he inserted a apocryphal qoute as if it is said by Ibni Al Arabi, a well-known and respected scholar, in the book. I will not put the quote attributed to Al Arabi here to not help that fake quote to be spreaded.

Secondly, most of the book has nothing to do directly with Kahlil Gibran, you just read observations and current political evaluations of the author about Lebanon and elsewhere. And most of things he talks about Islam, Sufism and mysticism are wrong, bias, and doesn't reflect the truth.

As the title says – a spiritual journey with Kahlil Gibran. Paul-Gordon set out to discover what fed Gibran’s spiritual thinking, writing and painting. Like many people, I suspect, I have only read The Prophet and that a long time ago. Paul-Gordon thoughtfully introduces us to Gibran, his life and his work, and with it a longing to read much more of him ourselves, now with a little more background. In following this journey he shares Gibran’s spirituality which transcended established religion. Paul-Gordon is sympathetic with this, as am I.

This book was written by my cousin's husband. For all of us who have read and like The Prophet, it is really interesting to learn the history of the author. It is written as a book of discovery as Paul-Gordon travels the world to see Kahlil's world and works first hand.

I was given Prophet by Gibran to read when I was in college. The words were profound and it deeply affected me. Then I forgot all about it and found this book about Gibran at the library. I am glad I read this because it taught me many things I did not know about Gibran, his life, quest and works. Chandler has chronicled Gibran meticulously by visiting and gathering many details that shows the poet inany dimensions. One day I hope I can follow Chandler's footsteps and visit all those places Gibran's works have spread.
