I really enjoyed this modern take on a Cinderella story. Damon was such a kind soul, and his step-family were some of the most awful people imaginable who never hesitated to put him down or treat him poorly. It made me so sad to see how much Damon internalized all of the mistreatment, so when he decided to have a night for himself at a fancy ball, I was thrilled. What should have been a fun night of relaxing turned into an unexpected reunion with Michael, a man who Damon thought had died years ago, and their connection kickstarted a whirlwind of changes in Damon's life. I absolutely understood Damon's hesitation to talk to Michael at first--anyone would be a bit uncomfortable seeing a dead man walking around--but with a bit of time and patience he became a lifeline for Damon, someone he could be his authentic self around. Damon started to transform from the cowering, quiet guy he was at home into a bright, lively man with fabulous fashion sense and a sharp mind. I loved seeing how much these guys brought out the best in each other, and as they started exploring a steamier side to their relationship, I was falling hook, line, and sinker. The more Michael uncovered about Damon's step family, the more furious I was at the way they'd gaslit, lied, and stolen from Damon over the years. My only consolation was knowing that Michael would never let Damon suffer through anything alone ever again, but even that was tested thoroughly towards the end of the story. I was shocked at how far Damon's step family would go to further their own interests, and that finale was packed with drama, action, and enough danger to make my palms sweat. Thankfully Michael and Damon held their own and fought hard for their love, and with the last of their enemies dealt with, they were free to ride off to Canada together and settle into a much calmer life together.
