Sloane After centuries of war between Heaven and Hell, the veil to Hell opened, and chaos was unleashed on the Earth. Amidst the destruction, my family fled to the military bunker under the command of my father. Underground, I spent my childhood training to be a Hunter, the elite force who slaughtered demonic monsters night after night. The demons from Hell were my enemies, yet I should have been looking at my colleagues, those I called my friends. Kidnapped and brought to Hell, I learn the truth behind the fall of Earth, yet there’s so much left to uncover. I am more. More than just a Hunter or a human. But no one knows what I am, not even my captors, the enticing monsters I’m inexplicably drawn to. I know our bond is impossible, our union a betrayal of everything I stand for. I'm reminded of it with every glint of their horns, flash of their wings, or flick of their tails. When the truth is uncovered, will I be the one to save humanity or be their destruction? In this gripping apocalyptic, why choose romance, the forces of darkness and light collide in a battle for the fate of humanity, and the bond between two demons, a fallen angel, and a human may be the only thing that can save them all. No animals are harmed in this series.
January 2024 update: Melody is no longer publishing. Thank you for all of the support over the years.
Melody Calder is a multi-trope romance author with an addiction to chocolate, dill pickles, books, and swearing; not necessarily in that order. Her mind is always full of interesting characters and plot twists. She not so secretly loves cliffhangers and endings that are not the norm.
She hopes to survive the teenage years of her twins, which is worse than the terrible twos, and her puppy who lives up to his name - Dragon. Her hobbies include collecting elephant figurines, painting, and annoying her husband by forgetting to switch the laundry. Her family and friends will tell you that she needs reminders for everything, but they love her anyway.
Although a little slow to start, once it got going it really did hook its claws into me and wouldn’t let me go. I love being introduced to new characters,m some I’d like to get to know more and hopefully willin future books.Sloane is a fantastic FMC , but oh her men, well you’ll have to read to find out all about them and why they’re so hot ! I am definitely looking forward to watching their relationships grow, a really good first book and looking forward to more
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed the world building that was done and the use of flashbacks to tell backstories instead of a character simply explaining it. I also really liked the aura system and how that’s what is used to determine the goodness or lack thereof in people. I do wish the book was a little longer and the final scene seemed like an odd one to end on, but I will definitely be reading the second installation.

There were some good bones to this book. An interesting idea for the plot and setting, and potentially fun characters. Unfortunately, the execution wasn't great.
The writing was rough and the thing was in dire need of another round of editing. There were inconsistencies (mixed up soul colouring), mispelled words and character names, and sentences that didn't make any sense. All of this could've been due to it being an arc, I sure hope it was revised before being published.
Pacing was another issue. The beginning was fine, the story starts off with a flashback, some exposition and setting up Sloane's Hunter life. It felt a bit jumpy but the characters were nice and I really liked Sloane's parents and Lieutenant White.
Then things turned weird. The story felt really rushed and fast paced compared to the slow flow of the beginning. A lot of information and bigger revelations were crammed into several pages of flashbacks or sitting down and talking back to back and then bam, there's the ending.
Additionally, it was weird how the characters kept talking about "a couple decades" when it should've been two for everyone in every instance, it made events or timeframes seem larger and inconsistent somehow. It also happened at least once that a character referenced an event that happened a couple hours earlier and made it sound like days or weeks ago, which annoyed me to no end.
I also wasn't a huge fan of the whole "females aren't weak" thing. Sloane lashing out at people if she misunderstood an intention irked me a lot. I didn't enjoy it being such a huge thing and major part of her character. Especially, since she froze up when things got tough or hid behind one of the guys as soon as she could during/after confrontations. Iirc there was only one instance where she did actually fight and that was when she jumped the three MMCs and they didn't put up a fight.
Overall, After Dark had a lot of promise and could've been really good with more editing and if the story was given more time to develop.
This was my first read by this author and based on this book I definitely will be checking out book 2 in this series, I am super invested in the characters. I loved the concept and really felt the relationship building and world building was refreshing. I cannot wait til book 2 comes out.
Now let me first talk about what I liked before I go into why I knocked this down to a 3.5 star rating. I looooooved the guys, they really were adorable and the way they connected with Sloane made me swoon. I thought Sloane was an amazing leading lady. She is someone you will want to root for and will connect with right away. I loved how the story opened up, it was gripping and made it easy to imagine what this apocalyptic world was going to be and why/how they got there. I loved her mom, her doggie guardian and best friend, and the older friends she had at the compound (who had interesting lives before all of this). I thought the baddies in the compound and the indoctrination that was happening was well done and also hits close to home with some states right now in the US so it made me as a reader connect. I am not sure about her dad to be honest, I don’t think we have all the answers but I wish he would have been more honest with her and had tried to squash the rebellion earlier. Now let’s talk about the guys and their situation. I loved the play on colors (won’t explain, IYKYK). I am intrigued to see if more will be added to this harem. I loved Cutler from the very beginning, Stone started off with a huge ego but quickly bonded/mated and it was all over hahaha. I appreciated August’s nerdiness and his reluctance with things, but I love how protective and thoughtful he is. Especially at the end with her mom. I am interested how Lucifer will ruin things after this declaration, and to find out what really happened/if they can reverse anything the Gods may have done. OH and the steaaaaaaaaam and the romance. So. effin. good. Again I really liked this book and if the execution was on par with the story and development of the world and characters, I would have given this a 5 star review.
I think for me, I try not to let punctuation/grammar/etc. dictate a review or rating unless it’s pretty bad. For me though, when a book has a lot of plot holes and things that should have been caught in the editing, beta reading, proofreading, it's hard for me to ignore them. This one has a lot of issues in terms of that. The execution of this felt like it was a draft, there were so many plot holes/differences, it took me out of the story because I had to look back to make sure I didnt imagine it or to fully understand what was really happening. Also please make sure you pick one way to name your main character and stick to it (it flipped from Sloane to Slone). I think if this was polished up, it could be a big hit with readers. I think some got frustrated with how much this felt like a newbie author who hadn’t gone through the whole process of finishing up a book before release.
The FMC is an idiot who throws temper tantrums and tries to manipulate her ex with phrases like “Oh, come on. Prince Charming never kept secrets from his princess”. The immaturity is unbelievable. We are led to believe she’s a hardened soldier who spent her life fighting monsters from hell, yet she freezes with fear and is easily over powered whenever in danger. You’d think then, that she might avoid peril, but instead she stubbornly screams, shouts and demands, when she should be shutting her mouth and acquiescing in the name of survival.
Predictably the 3 MMC’s can only see her shining brilliance “you’re strong Sloane. A force to be reckoned with”. The males’ internal dialogue is all about how amazing and clever she is, sadly there is no actual evidence of this!
Her 2 demons and her fallen angel, are cinnamon rolls, no brooding alpha types here. The one sex scene had me cringing through the kind of internal dialogue a teenage girl might dream up, not a demon!
The plot is inconsistent to say the least and unbelievable acts of convenience take place. Even the villain is convenient; one minute his brain is so addled he is easily side tracked and duped “We all respect your knowledge of the fuckability of each demoness….” (?!!!!), the next he’s a mastermind with hidden secrets and our three hero’s are terrified of him and must follow his evil plan for destruction!
From the beginning, the idea of Sloane being capable of running the human resistance is laughable. This entire story lacks any believability. I won’t be reading any more in this series.
Note: this book has a dog who protects the FMC. The dog is not harmed in this book, for those that need to know!!!

An age old story of good Vs evil, heaven Vs hell. But the story isn't so black and white! Sloane, a human, fighting for survival as the world burns during the war of heaven and hell. But she will soon learn the truth, her soul is unique and being drawn to the prince of hell, a fallen angel and a soldier of hell may actually be what ends the war. I'm a sucker for a story about heaven and hell, good Vs evil and enemy to lovers and this didn't disappoint. The story was so good at sucking you in and i felt like you got to know the fmc, Sloane, really well. I would have liked to have seen a bit more from a couple of other characters, but as this is the first book, I would imagine we will soon enough, I loved the author take on the soul idea, it have this story a bit of a twist on the "typical" heaven and hell story, its certainly keeping me guessing as to what it could mean! Oh and Sloane's men!! Yess please! I loved reading about them, looks like we have a serious one, a more jokey one and a calm, sensitive one. I will look forward to seeing how they're relationship progresses, but I'm definitely loving the characters. The best one being axel the dog, love that mutt. Overall a very enjoyable read, if you like your enemies to lovers, heaven/heal, demons, angels, a bit of spice, then definitely read this one!!!
I was all in within the first chapter - running through the streets in a mass panic and confusion of WTH is going on! FINALLY, someone captured true human nature of everyone for themselves. Because let's face it, we are selfish deeks. I love Sloane, this is a character that is very well written with her bada$$'ness, take not crap, true heart and compassion to help others. She proves that you can kick butt, look hot and be a softy with a puppy in a beautiful package. Now on to the yummy, hot and delicious hell demons. Yeah, I said it. Hell Demons and an Angel but because of his address he is getting lumped in with the demons. Each of these guys has a personality that you will fall for, even if at first you are like, "Really? Did he? No he didn't" Trust me on this one...... Now for the star of the show, THE PUPPY! Axel is a true bada$$ and I will kick and scream if something happens to that fluffy ball of love. Sit back and enjoy this steamy book and while you are reading, keep an eye out for any Easter Eggs. If you have read other Melody Calder books, then you will have your OMG moments.
In the wake of a fallen world, where demons rule the land and the humans fight to survive, a human with a pure and special soul will bring about the change the world so sorely needs. Sloane is a spunky, beautiful and strong woman who has seen her fair share of evil and fights hard to keep them at bay. But she has a secret, she desires the knight, the demon, she once saw as a child. And there starts the story of her and her men.
It was an easy read, despite the German commands I kept forgetting, and something that sparked my interest and kept it as I admittedly sped through the story, wanting to find out the end. Besides the obvious love .. square.., the premise was intriguing as it touches on the issues of heaven and hell and the gods and Lucifer. Not everything is black and white and sometimes, things don't turn out as it seems. I am determined to find the truth behind the prophecy and the original plans.
Till the next book!

**I received a free ARC from Book Sirens and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.** I have really been getting into the RH books here lately, so I grabbed this one up knowing full well, a nasty cliffhanger was coming my way. I'll tell you though, not as nasty as some of the other authors I've been reading.
I really enjoyed the dystopian plot line of the end of the world and demons running over the earth. Then, there's Sloane, a completely fleshed out, feisty, independent, STRONG FMC and her guys? Demons? Prince of hell? Fallen Angel? It gets a little complicated, but it's written well, so I was on board with it.
So why not a 5 star? I'll tell ya...I know this is an ARC, I know it's probably not finished and polished, etc, BUT, there were so many editorial mistakes, continuity issues, etc, that I almost got out my red teacher pen and sent the author back a copy that was completely marked up. Someone needs to fix this before it's published for real.
If you want a badass lead female, beautiful and dark worldbuilding, and tough yet soft lead males, this is the novel for you!
I am absolutely in love with this novel, I couldn't get enough of it! The world-building is extremely well done, no info-dump occurring - instead a flowing narrative that introduces plot-points and characters seamlessly.
Each character perspective/narration had their own personality and voice, building on both their own storyline as well as the communal narrative, and this distinction made the jumps between characters smooth. Additionally, the changes between narration are well placed - not jumping for the sake of jumping - but instead flowing along as a natural change.
I look forward to the continuation of this series, as I still can't get enough of that CLIFFHANGER!!!!!
Thank you to BookSirens and Melody Calder for the opportunity to read this novel for free in return for an honest review.
This was my first time reading this author and I completely enjoyed it. She painted a picture of how the gates of hell opened as seen through a toddlers eyes. Then she brings the picture to life 20 years later when the toddler is now a young woman.
Sloane is a bad@ss FMC .. a daughter, a friend, a fighter and a leader. Trouble is brewing though and the boy she has known all her life is wanting more.
Eli is trouble .. and such an egotistical jerk. Has he always been this way and hid it well or has someone been working to change him?
Sloane ends up in Hell and meets some strikingly handsome hot as hell Demons. Did I mention hot as hell? They have wings … and feathers .. and tails … ohhhh what can they do with their tails.
The ending is a small cliff that leaves you waiting for the next book…
This book was interesting! It had a unique premise and a badass FMC, which is always appreciated. My main concern with it was the pacing. I caught myself losing a bit of interest around the halfway mark, and it took me a while to get it back. What brought me back was the aura plotline.
(Slight spoilers) I really liked that certain colors of her aura were attracted to a certain man. However, this kinda led me to believe that she was gonna have 7 mates, and I was a little disappointed to find out that that wasn't the case. I get it though, because 3+ love interests isn't for everyone and probably not something that interests most RH fans.
Overall, I think this series has potential! Also, I'm a sucker for a cute dog that kicks ass too, so I loved Axel!

This was a great start to the first in an up and coming series. I am already excited for the second book to come out. The only issue I found- and its not so much as an issue- just that Sloane and Stone are so close in similar sounding names its easy to get confused on who is talking, especially if someone is a fast reader. Other than this one teeny tiny thing, this book had me pulled in and now I really want to know why Sloane is the only human out there with such a colorful soul. It such a shame that Stone's father is so insane. I believe he would have been like a second father to Sloane. Can't wait for book two. After Dark started strongly and finished strongly. The book makes some huge leaps in terms of plot and motivation of characters, but if you can put these aside (and you can because it’s well written) it offers an interesting adventure.
The post-apocalyptic world created by a war between heaven and hell seems an odd place for romance, but the book sizzles with it. Hot and heavy are the words I’d use to describe it.
I’d have liked to have experienced some more of the character arcs that showed the journey from weak to warrior for our leading lady and her mum, but recognise that there is not always room for this. Nevertheless this a fun read and I’m looking forward to the sequel.

This was the first book I have read by this author and it will not be the last. I wasn't sure after reading the blurb if it was something I would want to read, this style is not what I normally go for, however this author has changed my mind and I need more. From the start you get sucked in with the world ending and demons coming out. Then what life is like for the survivors that are left and what they face or think they face. Then to meeting the demons and for me sad to say loving them more then the humans S is left with. And then it just ends and I'm like NOOOOOO ....I need book two now.. must read ..great book
When Sloane was very young there was a tear in the veil to hell and she saw all the demons coming out. Her family now lives in a bunker and as she grew older she trained to be a hunter of the demons. But what about the humans in the bunker that are bad? In the apocalyptic world, she meets two demons and a fallen angel and is attracted to all three. And her best friend turns on her. Melody has created an amazingly scary world with characters that are so rich, it will be easy to slide into her imagination. With angst, danger, secrets, betrayal and three hot guys thrown in, this story will draw you in until you hit the cliffhanger. Wow, great read.
This started off well, the writing was a bit clunky but you got the gist of the plot. At about 40% the plot stalls, there is so much repetitive information, going as far as characters repeating the same information to each other line after line.
A lot of yammering about gods however I drew the line at having to read the authors views on good and bad. I have no interest in being preached to. A lot of skipping went on here. As you can well imagine nothing much happens. I was getting annoyed with the whole dog commands in German, if you told us once there is no need to repeat it 72 times.
Sloane's world as she knew it ended over 20 years ago. A little girl growing up in an underground bunker when the veil between the earth and hell opened. As her mom and her run for their lives to the bunker, she sees a knight with red eyes that looks at her. Her dad is the base commander and she had a friend whose dad was also an officer. They grew up to both be hunters, but a little girls dreams change as life changes.
This is an interesting story with several twists and a cliffhanger. I thouroughly enjoyed this story and can't wait for the next chapters. In highly recommend this story.

Sloane (FMC) has grown up in a post apocalyptic war torn world when all Hell breaks loose (quite literally!) and her family become a community with other surviving humans. Building a new life in this new world. Sloane in herself becoming a hunter to protect them all from Demons, Monsters and Angels. Only for things to turn for her and events make her uncertain who the bad guys are. Sloane has a great dynamic with the guys and I can't wait to see where it will lead. This was a good read and I'm lookng forward to book 2.
I received this book as a free ARC and all words in this review are my honest opinion. This was an interesting book with an intriguing premise! As soon as I read the blurb, I knew I wanted to read this book!
I enjoyed our FMC, Sloane, as she is strong and feisty and smart and strong-willed and an excellent fighter. She can take care of herself and she knows it, and she doesn't allow others to treat her as if she can't. I love her parents and how supportive and strong they are and how they know what she is capable of and let her do what she wants and what she needs to do. Their interactions are sweet and loving and fun and they seem like the perfect apocalypse family.
This story was interesting and full of betrayal and madness and interesting plot points, but I was not expecting an RH romance going into this! I was pleasantly surprised and actually liked that aspect, but I was confused when the first (what I thought was) non-central POV came into the story because I was not aware of it being RH. 😂 I like the twist to the story that the demons aren't just willy-nilly killing all humans, but ridding the world of the tainted souls. Also that Lucifer is going nuts, but was a good leader before. I look forward to the next installment.
All of that being said, the reason that this review isn't a solid 4⭐ is because of the choppy feeling I got while reading the beginning of the book. Some of the descriptions and the wording did not flow well and felt forced. I was also not a fan of the "To be continued..." at the end of the book, it felt a bit weird. I do wish we had a bit more characterization throughout for all of the characters. While I understood Sloane's motivations, other characters seemed very 2D. Once again, I did enjoy this book though and will be reading the next when it comes out!
This book, wow, what a read. From the moment that I started I knew that I was in for something special. This book moves along at a pace that makes for an easy and enjoyable read that you will not be able to put down. No matter what happens you want to see the characters overcome whatever may be in their way and by the end of the book you are loving them. This book has to be read, you will not be sorry that you did.
This is hands down my favourite book by this author. I love it when world building is done well and I can picture the world in my head. This book achieved that. Love this post apocalyptic story about survival, secrets, prophecies and romance. I was hooked from the first few pages until the cliffhanger. The characters are complex and really well written and I’m eagerly awaiting the next book. I can’t say more as it would spoil the story.
Brilliant read. Sloane is living in a miliatary base, Training to be a hunter. The world has gone to pieces and Demons roam free. The humans have no choice but to hunt or be hunted. Sloane is one powerful girl, leader of her team, until they mutiny and she is left with no choice but to trust those she once fought against. The Heir of Hell is protecting her. But she has to look at her surroundings and find her truth. Brilliant read.
This is such a good book. I really enjoyed the story and the characters are so detailed they just come alive for you. Different storyline than other prn. Sloane is a kick butt fmc and Cutler, Stone and August are awesome mmc's. Definitely go read this book. It does end on a cliffhanger so we have to wait for the next book. After Dark is a why choose, sexy, steamy slow burn involving a female human, 2 male demons and a male angel - doesn’t this sound amazing?!
I very much enjoyed After Dark and it’s unique storyline, I’ve never read anything like it. The plot itself was gripping and the characters were all extremely likeable (except for the obvious of course). However, my reason for 3.75 stars is due to the rushed, cliff hanger ending which felt quite abrupt to me and actually annoyed me a little, but I can’t wait for the second book to come out so there is a bonus there!
Thank you to Book Siren for sending me an advance readers copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Oh how I love a good monster/demon story! This was a great read for me I read it in a day not wanting to to put it down. This was a very original and spicy read but the cliffhanger came way to soon for me but don't they always. With two sexy domons and a gorgeous fallen angel who will cater to your needs i can't wait for the second book.
This was a gripping story that caught me up on the first page and didn't let go. Sloane was such a tough gal and her guys, demons, wow! Good score ;P I have to say, I loved Axel, her pooch - he was integral to the story for me :D Expect a well paced reading ride with fab world building, fascinating characters and engaging plot when you crack this baby open. I cannot wait for the next book to come out to see how things continue to unfold. Good fun!
This is book is set in a post-apocalytic world full of demons. The main character is such a badass ready to fight and lay down the law. The why choose was nicely teased out. If you don't like monster/demon romances, then this isn't the book for you. It isn't super spicy, but looks like it could become spicy later in the series. I enjoyed the story telling and would read book 2.
Great Read! I loved the storyline and the whole apocalyptic world. It kept me interested and even on the edge of my seat at times. There was action, mystery, demons, fallen angle, just a bit of spice and much more! I really liked Sloane. She was confident, sassy and strong. There is a bit of a cliffhanger, but that only makes me more excited for book 2!!
For me this book starts a little slow and confusing. It gets better along the way. Has some amazing characters. But then it seems to get rushed. How it left off was extremely odd. Guess I have to wait for the next book.
