Kathryn has always been a storyteller. Years of scriptwriting for performances on stage and for tourism in Boston led her to writing romantically dark, fantastical tales, which was an obsession of hers that began once seeing The Phantom of the Opera at a young age.

When she isn’t penning new villainous leads, she works in video game development. There, she has been everything from Creative Director to Chief of Staff, Design Manager, Executive Producer, and Principal Writer for various companies in the industry.

She shares her antique home with three very fluffy animals and one very patient and loving husband.

Snakey boi gets the girl

So I had fun reading this duet and getting to know Izael and Alex, but having such a fast burn seemed like a strange choice. Like, I’m all for the whole “villain gets the girl” thing, but not after a couple weeks. Izael was charismatic, psychotic, and funny to Alex’s grumpy. It was grumpy x sunshine but make the sunshine character a lil crazy. Or a lot crazy. They had good chemistry and the world building was fun.

2.8/5 A lot more boring than the first story. Alex spends most of the book just contemplating her options and it gets very repetitive and it’s already such a short story.

I know I say this a lot when it comes to Kathryns books, but I fricking loved this book and series! (I can’t help that everything she writes is great 😉). Alex was such a great character, she was smart and almost alway had a quick comeback against Izael. I think her magic has been the coolest so far out of all of the KAK books I’ve read, and I think her strength was showcased perfectly with Valroy. Izael is perfect, just the right amount of caring, loving, crazy, and smart (I could keep going lol). While it was a bit twisted, I love how covetous and protective he was of Alex. I loved what they had together. Puck was awesome, hands down. I think he should keep making random appearances throughout the rest of any books that take place in Tir n’Aill. Those spicy scenes though 🥵. I enjoyed how easily the story picked up right from where we left off in The Unseelie Duke, the storyline read well throughout the whole series. I will definitely be rereading this series again. I highly recommend reading this series!

Quick, cute, spicy. All good things. While the romance is definitely the main focus, I once again enjoyed the overarching plot of this duology. Great banter, truly morally gray main characters, and witty side characters kept me intrigued. Anything in this world by this author will be an insta-buy for me.

A good duology. I like the characters, the length of the series, their romance, the story.

Izael is a great character. He's fun, and I love that he's a snake, with all his snake features.

loved seeing my little weirdos again

Another fun read. These two books probably could’ve been one but WHATEV. Fun spice. Silly cast of characters. Hope to come back to this world again.

These books are a quick but very enjoyable read. I’ll be sad when the unseelie series ends! Three more words.

Was not expecting to marathon read this in one sitting 😁.

I'm well aware that people see this as a watered down Maze of Shadows, but I beg to differ. Unlike that series, we see a full range of emotion in both Alex and Izael: the anger and frustration in him when she flees to the Seelie (and in her once she realizes the Seelie are also lookin' out for #1... hence her iron chain), sadness upon their thinking un-aliving is the only way to save both worlds and be together (the tenderness that came from Izael during that moment when he claims "I'd rather give you the chance to live longer, even if I'm not around" is a level of vulnerability we never got from Valroy. Hell, the Duke of Bones shed tears for Alex). There's even a callback to the angry "I'm Unseelie, what else did you expect?" moment. But again, more it's more intimate, literally taking place in Alex's bedroom. Izael is there to apologize and Alex goes "It's absurd of me to expect you to think rationally/kindness first. You are Unseelie after all." Izael returns "It's selfish of me to expect you to be so all or nothing in making this decision. You're a human, this is Fae trouble".

And his last want: to see Alex sing onstage at their favorite night club. Don't get me started on Alex realizing she loves him while watching him in his true form 💞😭😭❤️. The wrap up was rushed, but unlike the OG series, Alex and Izael get married/live in harmony that Valroy and Abigail could never have. Oh, and he gets her soul in the end anyway 😜.

Side note, did anyone else see a bit of Mom and Dad in how Valroy and Abigail dealt with their courts/friends? What a turn of events for a man who claimed to never want children 😉.

✨4.5✨

Kathryn is a master at writing witty banter and colorful characters. I always end up getting completely drawn in and invested in them.
This duology was so very sweet, and I loved the characters. It was also nice to revisit some of the old characters from the Maze of Shadows series.

Her books are definitely a mood read, as all her characters across her different series tend to share more or less the same characteristics; like a personality recipe she's following more or less
(her bigger series also shares very specific repetitive outcomes in its storylines), but just delivered in a different "package" for each series. But honestly, it works for me as her writing/stories just scratches an 'itch' for me that only she can deliver.
Her books are always an instant buy for me; I just read her series in intervals so they don't feel as repetitive (hence why the mood-reading choice works great).

It's an interesting world to read about.

It is, however, exhausting lol poor Abigail always having to thwart Valroys end of world schemes. Just endless death and destruction. I don't understand how Abigail and Valroy "love" each other. Even in the original series, I never really felt his love for Abigail - he can't be a good person if he's constantly trying to murder everyone. I get that he's Unseelie and not supposed to be the good guy, but even Iz gives up his schemes for actual love. I guess my POV is that I don't understand how Abigail could love Valroy. He isn't the good kind of "bad guy" just a plain villain.

I did enjoy Iz and Alex's back and forth and Iz constantly making new deals with people only to betray them shortly after lol just chaotic. If there is another book after this one I hope it doesn't involve Abigail or Valroy they truly get on my nerves!

Read it all in one sitting. Again, felt like reading a novella since there wasn't too much world building or fleshing out of scenes.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as the first one. Probably because there wasn't as much focus as I'd like on the main couple. There was more focus on the side characters who I didn't really connect with nor care about as I could not understand their motivations at all. Lots of politics and scheming happening that the plot just felt all over the place for me. Nothing really clicked until halfway through. Even then, the climax was anti-climactic.

Don't think I'd read the series again even though it was initially a cute and silly time - there were just too much happening but nothing really at all at the end of the story.

Overall rating: 3/5

wow just wow i loved the way KAK wrapped this duet up!

alex and iz go through so much in this book, iz is still our sneaky snekk and alex grew so much character wise from the first chapter of the first book to the last chapter of the second. this is def not your traditional romance, alex fights iz at every turn (he likes it though 🤭).

the unseelie duke is the first installment of the deal of shadows series, i recommend reading that book first. also this series is a standalone so you do not have to read the maze of shadows series but in my opinion to get the lore and world building explained to the fullest extent- i would.

*Thanks to the author for sending me an ARC of this book*

No rating because I've put this down at about 35%. I'd STRONGLY recommend reading (or re-reading) the first book before going into this one. I read and enjoyed the first when it came out but in this book I cannot remember a goddamn thing, and all the fae deals/wishes/treaties/plots are going right over my head.

Sincerest apologies to the author for not finishing on this occasion - I hope I'll return to re-read the whole series in future.

Reviewing both as one, because just like its predecessor, the Maze of Shadows, this could have been one book.

I could not get over the fact that Alex is exhaustingly insufferable and Izael is just a shitty person through and through, shallow and without depth or any interesting characterisation other than… edginess? It really felt like a shitty off brand version of the first series in this world, except the author was like “how could I do this exact same thing again except take everything interesting and good about Abigail and Valroy and get rid of it while dailing up all the worst parts?”

The first series was sort of a foray into the intricacies of the linking of pain and pleasure, good and bad, life and death. This one really just felt like glorifying abuse and was genuinely hard to read at times.

Content aside, these really needed a good edit. Plot holes, inconsistencies, repetition, and errors all over the place. Half the content was just the same thing over and over. Had it all been cut, these two would’ve been one book easy. Because of that, I found it really hard not to get bored in these repetitive loop lulls.

Honestly I think the only good part about them was getting to visit the world of Tir n’Aill again and see all the characters from the past series (Abigail, Valroy, Puck(!), Anfar, Bayodan, Cruinn). Getting to revisit this world and these characters were what kept me going throughout these two books. Puck and Bayodan absolutely carried this.

So the actual story between the two main characters gets 1/5 for me. But the background story including the side characters and the world, 2/5. I guess that makes it a solid 1.5 but I’ll round up for posterity. Feel like I have to again note my disdain on the behaviours that were normalised in this, though.

After the absolute chaotic delight of The Unseelie Duke, I was READY to dive back into the madness with Alex and her manic fae menace, Izael. The Unseelie Wish picks up the stakes — both emotional and magical — but ends up veering deeper into court politics and side-character scheming than I personally wanted. More fae backstabbing? Sure. But less Alex and Izael banter-flirt-fight-makeout time? A little devastating.

We do get major plot progression: death, resurrection, bargains twisted by love, and a soulbound snake duke who would literally burn the world down for his girl. Alex makes a wish — a big one — and it brings Izael back from the brink, but with consequences. She’s now Unseelie. With power. And responsibilities. And an unhinged boyfriend who needs more cuddles than he’ll admit.

What did work:
🖤 Izael being completely down bad, obsessed, and feral for Alex
🖤 Snake boy features making another blessed appearance (tail play + venom = yes pls)
🖤 A darker dive into Unseelie magic and mythology
🖤 The second spicy scene? Delivered.

What left me wanting:
🤷‍♀️ A LOT of time spent on Valroy/Abigail + political drama. I wasn’t emotionally invested in them, so those sections dragged

That said, Izael is still one of the most entertaining fae love interests I’ve read. He’s unhinged, petty, flamboyant, and wants nothing more than to be loved by the girl who keeps calling him out on his nonsense. And Alex? Still a queen, even if her spotlight dimmed a little in this entry.

Tropes :
🖋️ Wish magic with big consequences
🖋️ Soulmates who would destroy the world for each other
🖋️ Unhinged cinnamon roll chaos gremlin MMC
🖋️ “Touch her and die” energy
🖋️ Fated-ish mates, forbidden-ish love, and serpentine spice

War. Death. Enslavement. That's the cost of us being together. How can I accept that you love me, when that's what's at stake?

Action 1.5 ↓↓
Writing 3 ↓↓
World 3.5 ≈
Romance 3.5 ≈
Spice 4 ↑

- Kinda unsatisfying resolution to the chess game of "what should she wish for"..
- No interesting world-building to pique my interest on top of what was told in book 1.
- No tense action except for some in the finale: she hangs out with her magical friends at her home for a week (she asked for this week, but didn't figure out her next steps anyway), then she hangs out with MMC in the city again.. I guess the author was out of ideas.
- This story should have been shortened to one book.
- Writing has annoying modern slang and references: "Uh oh", "bazooka", etc.
- No communication or connection between MCs until 37%, just a boring waiting period.

***

- Smut starts at 40% (right after they are reunited) with very possessive love-hate vibes, 2 full scenes overall.
- He gave her a chance to refuse, twice, so it's kinda consensual.
- Kinks:

Witches, love, insane blue haired weirdos, monster sex, and the return of your fae faves— that’s what’s in this one. Kat never misses, and boy oh boy did she deliver with this sequel. When we last left Alex and Iz, she was running from him out of terror, which is something I’ve always enjoyed for reasons we won’t analyze. He’s willing to do anything to get her back, of course, but not before we get some very interesting interactions between Alex and Abigail. And, of course, there’s Puck, who’s always a riot. Alex’s powers get CRAZY COOL, naturally. It’s also very fun to see a former ‘hero’ (if one could even call the love interests in Kat’s books heroes lmao) become a straight up villain. Which is some very interesting commentary on how a really hot guy is a one person’s spouse and another person’s bad guy. Anyway, there’s also more than one sex scene in this one, just sayin’.

So if you’re wondering if you should read this or not, the answer is a big fat YES. Definitely read (or reread, as was the case with me) the first one before you do. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Fantastic story

Ms Kingsley's stories are new to me having just discovered her work. The Deal of Shadows series was a fun romp through the Seelie and Unseelie kingdoms. I have always been drawn towards the fantasy of the fae, but I don't really grasp the difference. Are these mentioned kingdoms considered fae? Or are they separate from the world of fairy? I've read authors who have written about fairy realms before, sometimes basing them as Seelie/Unseelie and sometimes they choose to separate fairy from Seelie. Either way it's a fun read to get pulled into the fantasy. So thank you, I appreciate the adventure.

Phenomenal per usual with Kathryn's books.

I'm at a loss for words. I devoured this book even though I TRIED so hard to make it also because I didn't want it to end. I think the only thing I would want added is for Alex to have fixed Bayoden's arm and fix Cruinn but I can just pretend that it does happen at a game night in the future or something. Lol. I love how Kathryn is always able to write these unconventional love stories in such a beautiful and dark way but still somehow manages to make her stories not feel like the same story being recycled with different characters. Can't wait for more amazing books by her!

I made it to 63%. I'm just not loving this continuation. The book seems to have taken the fun moments and vibe of the first book and turned it into a convoluted mess. I'll make this deal that will teach them,oh no I'll get this other person to help me change the deal and they won't know that this is actually what I really want, like come on why is everything so mixed up and messey. I feel like the connection is being lost, and the communication between the main character is not happening. The story has spiraled into something im not enjoying. I'm just not feeling the story anymore, which absolutely sucks because I liked the first one.

Such a fun book. I still love the humor between the two of them and Alex's quick comebacks. The banter is great and Izael's character growth keeps the relatioship from being too red flag cringy. I am glad I reread the first book last week or I think I would have been pretty lost. Definitly a book series that's best to read together.

Would love a bonus chapter from Izael's point of view for how things actually went down in chapter 22 and not just his retelling of them. Has a real Romeo and Juliet thing going on.

Wow

I enjoyed this book very much, I had taken a break after the first one and forgot about it for a minute but I came back and I am glad I did. I enjoyed izael and his insane dangerous personality he was quirky, and Alex definitely grounded him to some extent. Didn't love Valroy still don't love him, I don't really have any feelings towards Abigail either. This book was a rollercoaster and it had me laughing quite a bit. I kind of wish we had seen more of Alex's powers explored though.

I love Kathryn Ann Kinglsey’s books so much, especially those set in Tir n’Aill.

The story starts off really fast-paced and eases into it around half the book. I really love how Izael changes when he realizes his feelings for Alex, I was honestly expecting another sneaky plan from him but I guess he’s learned his lesson lol.

Anyways, I loved seeing Valroy and Abigail again in this duet too! Such a treat!

A small thing but I noticed 2 typos — one with Abigail’s name and the spelling of duchess… it didn’t stop me from enjoying it anyways!

Faerie tales & demonic derring-do!

This was all far more light-hearted than the original books with Abigail & Valroy. It seems that Unseelie men have an affinity with mortal witches that ultimately bring about near ruin for themselves & all those around them. Izael & his sneaky, snakey ways is like a toddler with ADHD & would be utterly exhausting to know in real life, if you know what I mean! All in all, this is a slightly frothy addition to the Shadows Chronicles but things can't be all angst & doom; even daemons must get some down time!

What a great book to end the series. I absolutely adored Izael and Alex. This book gave me everything I wanted. Excellent spicy scenes, great banter, and sweet Izael who would burn the world down for Alex. Kat does a phenomenonal job building this world, it gave me what I needed without being too flowery. I'm sad that the series is over, I truly hope that Kathryn Kingsley writes another spin off in this world.
