Royal Street #2

The House on Prytania

14 hours, 8 minutes

A woman is haunted—both literally and figuratively—by ghosts of the past in this second novel of the Royal Street series by New York Times bestselling author Karen White.

Nola Trenholm may not be psychic herself, but she’s spent enough time around people who are to know when ghosts are present, and there are definitely a few lingering spirits in her recently purchased Creole cottage in New Orleans. Something, or someone, is keeping them tethered to this world. And not all of them are benign.

But with the sudden return of Sunny Ryan, Beau Ryan’s long-lost sister, Nola has plenty to distract her from her ghostly housemates. Especially when the tempting—yet firmly unavailable—Beau, wanting to mete out justice to those he blames for Sunny’s kidnapping, asks Nola for a favor that threatens to derail her hard-won recovery and send her hurtling backward. He asks her to welcome Michael Hebert back into her life, even though Michael is the reason for Nola’s bruised heart. Beau is convinced that Michael’s powerful family was behind Sunny’s disappearance and that Michael is the key to getting information the police won’t be able to ignore—if Nola is willing to risk everything for which she’s worked so hard.

Torn between helping Beau and protecting herself, Nola doesn’t realize until it’s almost too late why the ghosts are haunting her house—a startling revelation that will throw her and Beau together to fight a common enemy. Assuming Nola can get Beau to listen to what the spirits are trying to tell him, because ignoring them could prove to be a fatal mistake...

Raised in a house full of brothers, Karen’s love of books and strong female characters first began in the third grade when the local librarian issued her a library card and placed The Secret of the Old Clock, a Nancy Drew Mystery, in her hands.

Karen’s roots run deep in the South where many of her novels are set. Her intricate plot lines and compelling characters charm and captivate readers with just the right mix of family drama, mystery, intrigue and romance.

Karen’s next book, THAT LAST CAROLINA SUMMER, will be published by Park Row Books in July, 2025.

When not writing, Karen spends her time reading, scrapbooking, playing piano, and avoiding cooking. Karen and her husband have two grown children and currently live near Atlanta, Georgia with two spoiled Havanese dogs.

Fans of the Tradd Street series will love the Royal Street series as fan favorite characters and their offspring often appear. The House on Prytania is the second book in the Royal Street series. Jack and and Melanie's oldest daughter Nola is featured as she returns to the city where she grew up. While Nola isn't a psychic, she gets a certain vibe when ghosts are present and it's not long before she senses the spirits inhabiting her new home, Creole Cottage. While most are friendly, Nola senses a malevolent spirit and needs to figure out what's preventing them from crossing over. When a shocking revelation throws her and Beau (the brother of Sunny who's returned home) together, sparks fly but both are resolved to the fact that nothing can happen between them. Nola throws herself into solving the mystery of the ghosts in her house, the childhood kidnapping of Sunny and what involvement, if any, her former beau Michael and his powerful family have in it all.

Karen White has a delightful way of pulling readers right into the middle of her highly atmospheric settings. You breathe in the ambiance - the sights, sounds and smells of an old city like New Orleans. I felt like I was touring NOLA in The House on Prytania - the restaurants, streets, old cemeteries, and famous landmarks. She has a gift for incorporating it all into a steady paced mystery that unfolds through well developed characters that you can't help but love. A hint of romance, a touch of paranormal and a side dose of humor are added enticement to keep turning pages. And while I can't say the big reveal was shocking to me, the story was highly readable and entertaining. While this is a spin-off series of Tradd Street, you can start here without a bump in your reading due to the great job White does of weaving in needed backstory. Having said that, I do advise reading book one, The Shop On Royal Street, only because it's a great story and introduction to the Royal Street series.

The House On Prytania is an intense, character driven story with all the elements of a great mystery. The characters, both alive and dead, are intriguing, easy to find empathy for and make up the perfect support cast for Nola as she tackles home renovations, the mystery of the ghosts surrounding her and answers to the mystery of who kidnapped Sunny. Fans of paranormal suspense will love this book and series. I highly recommend it to them plus fans of mysteries and suspense thrillers.
Many thanks to Uplit Reads and Berkley Publishing for a finished arc of this book and for the tour invitation. This review is published at Cross My Heart Reviews. All opinions expressed are my own.

Happy release day!

Two and a half stars rounded up. Thanks to Berkley for this second book in a series i haven't read, a spin-off from another series I also haven't read. I wish they'd mention this when they offer it. 😅 This book will be out May 9th.

I tried to skim the first book in this series in case it was necessary to read this one's ARC. In both books I found the same problem; a cozy paranormal mystery enticingly woven with some will-they won't-they romance, but ultimately so slowly paced that I lost interest quickly. It's a shame, since New Orleans has the capacity to be such a rich setting for a story, and this genre hybrid had some real promise.

Jolene is a lovable side character with some memorable dialogue and moments. Nola is cool in that she does her own renovations and a lot of her awkward moments are very relatable. The brief creepy ghosty moments add a little unf to otherwise dull sections. But none of this a greatly enjoyable book makes, for me at least. Both this and the previous books seemed way too long for their niche.

Nola is still working on renovating her Creole Cottage in Louisiana thinking that the spirit of Beau’s grandfather and Jeanne Broussard have moved on. Unfortunately, Beau’s grandfather is still there along with a malevolent presence. Nola knows there must be something still holding Beau’s grandfather there, but with the appearance of Beau’s long-lost sister that issue gets sidelined. But not for long.

I really like Nola and along with her I wanted to know why the spirit of Beau’s grandfather, and his mother, Adele was still hanging around when Sunny was found. There’s also the matter of the evil spirit also lurking. I love all the side characters in this series, Jolene, Nola’s best friend particularly! She cracks me up so much with all her Southern sayings, like “Never iron or fry chicken naked” her need to monogram everything for everyone, even their dog Mardi, her driving, and her constant efforts to bring Nola’s style up to par. Efforts Nola mostly tries to evade, but reluctantly appreciates. Nola and Jolene’s friendship is one of my favorite things about this series!

The ongoing messy romantic situation, with a Beau involved with someone else while there’s a clear attraction between Beau and Nola, would usually bother me, but somehow, it’s tolerable here. It’s part of the reason I keep reading on, and the fact that it isn’t the main feature of this story. The mystery, the ghosts, Nola’s friends, and progress in renovations make this story captivating. I love the setting of historic Louisiana and the subject of restoring old homes. I wish I was there in person to see it as it happens (yes, I do realize this is a fiction haha)!

This is a series where it's best to read in order. This mystery wraps up, but there’s an ongoing story arc and the relationships that make me eager for the next one!

I alternately listened and read an e-copy. Sophie Amoss’ performance brings the characters to life, and I love her Southern accents! I listened at my usual 1.5x normal speed. I recommend either format.

An e-copy was kindly provided by Berkley in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve been reading and loving The Tradd Street series for years, and it makes me so happy that author Karen White has continued on with this new spinoff Royal Street series that features a fascinating setting, the charm, the characters, and all the ghosts once again.

The House on Prytania is the second book in the Royal Street series, but it can be read as a stand-alone. Author Karen White fills in the backstory from the first book, and begins this story right where The Shop on Royal Street ends, but it’s such a great series that I would also read book one.

I loved the rich writing, the great characters that find their way into your heart, along with the funny moments too, the beautiful historic homes and New Orleans setting, and the spine-tingling suspense that surrounds the mystery of the ghosts. It was just enough suspense without feeling scary, and I loved it!

Genres: Paranormal/Contemporary

This series is a spinoff of another series....only now the daughter is the MC and not the Mom. But I miss the mom. While she does make an appearance in this one, I coudn't help it...I wanted more.

I like this new series. The author does the paranormal element well. It's there but it doesn't take over. I like that it stays tethered to the story.

I also love the characters and all their quirks. They are well drawn. KW has a knack for dialogue and that adds to the relationship dynamics which is usually a little sticky...but I love the southern charm.

The one thing that made this 3 stars and not 4 is that this one moved a little too slow for me. There was so much talking about this mystery. Or perhaps I should say, which is more accurate, is that the inner dialogue on the fact that they weren't talking about it seemed beyond monotonous. Those little things get in the way. Not my favorite. So 3 stars.

The Crescent City (New Orleans). Present day. Karen White’s The House on Prytania (Royal Street, #2)
is an absolute page-turner riddled with ghosts, sexual tension between Nola and Beau, and a deep mystery that ties together two of the most influential families in New Orleans. One is Beau’s. The other is the family of the young man for which Nola fell hard.

Nola Trenholm is busy renovating the house that picked her as its new owner. Her ‘crew’ consists of Thibaut Kobylt, who had “done time” for the death of his wife, and Jorge, “another jack-of-all-trades. Both men are marvels in construction. There is even a You-Tube channel following the renovation plus other activities. Just about anyone else will not set foot in Nola’s home as ‘people’ say that the house is not ‘right’. This could be because of the murder of Beau’s grandmother’s best friend that happened in Nola’s house, but that is just a guess.

Nola’s family is soon to visit, but before they do, Beau explains to Nola that he wants revenge for his sister’s, Sunny, kidnapping many years ago. Sunny has returned, but Beau still wants justice served.
This story has many facets, but the author’s prose lets the reader have a smooth ride in comprehending all even with a few ghostly bumps along the way. Clever dialogue is a gift the author gives the reader as seen when Beau and Nola are going to check out a property.

“Just because it’s old and abandoned doesn’t make it creepy.” Nola
“Maybe not, but the old woman staring at us from the top turret window sure does.” Beau

Karen White has done a 5 star plus writing this second book of Royal Street even if she “would have finished this book sooner” if not for her family. (Dedication) I almost cried when it ended! Waiting breathlessly for #3. Highly recommended if one is into having a few ghosts over. 5 stars.

THE HOUSE ON PRYTANIA is the second book in the Royal Street series. We follow Nola as she helps to uncover what happened to Beau's sister, Sunny, when she was taken as a young girl and has now returned home to New Orleans. I loved this book just as much as the first one in the series. Karen White does a great job recapping the first book, so you can pick up where the first book left off. Nola will always be my favorite character, although her friend, Jolene, is a real hoot. If you like paranormal thrillers, you are sure to love THE HOUSE ON PYRTANIA. I can't wait for next book in the series.

I didn’t think the first book in this spinoff series was as good as Tradd Street but this book was better than the first. Maybe because of longer cameo appearances by Melanie and Jack. Or because Nola seems to be embracing some of Melanie’s traits that she mocked (lovingly) when she was a kid in the Tradd Street books. I hope little sister, Sarah, will continue to play a role in the future books.

The House on Prytania
Karen White
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the second book in the Royal Street series and it is a real page turner. Karen writes books that have fun characters, great storyline and the setting is always so vivid.

Nola is still working on renovating her cottage and there are still ghosts there. Jolene returns as Nola’s roommate and always has something funny to say!! Jolene is one of my favorite characters ever.

Beau is back and his long lost sister, Sunny has returned. There is a lot of suspicion around how Sunny was abducted and Beau wants Nola to get involved with helping find out about the kidnapping. Will this be too much to ask of Nola? Is Sunny who sh says she is?? Why has she returned now??

I really enjoyed this book!! I like Karen’s humor, her character development and she puts you right there in New Orleans!! Happy Reading!!!

I’m being generous with 3 stars. The author fixed some things I really didn’t like from the first book which I really appreciate but I had new issues with this book. The characters were definitely more like able but the author fell into one of my pet peeves naming several characters with the same letter. For instance, Sunny, Sara, and Sam were all females and frequently found themselves in the same scenes. I was so confused even though I read the Tradd Street series and the first book. There was also Christopher, Conner and Cooper, and Jack, Jackson and JJ. Ugh!! I also had trouble with the pacing of the book, I felt it moved at a snail’s pace. I’m on the fence about reading more of her books in this series if she writes more. I loved the Tradd Street series and I liked Nola but this series missed the magic of the other series.

This was an excellent 2nd book in KW’s new Royal Street series! One of my favorite settings is New Orlean’s and I love a great ghost story with all the chills.. a perfect book for me! This follows the series main character, Nola Trenholm.. and handsome Beau Ryan.. as they work together to unearth a family’s secrets behind his sisters kidnapping. Ghosts of Beau’s family are STILL haunting her house, so why haven’t they passed over yet? Hmmm. An enjoyable light summertime read I would recommend if you’re looking for a mystery (complete with ghosts.. not all good) and a SURPRISE twist! 🎉👻 4 stars — Pub. 5/9/23

It’s a strange experience to be impatient and indulge eye-rolling disbelief with a book and yet still find it page-turning compelling. It’s not often I respond this way to a novel, but I did with Karen White’s The House on Prytania, second in her Royal Street series and a spin-off from the Tradd Street series. Part of the problem was that it was second in the series and I suspect I would have enjoyed the ghostly shenanigans more if I’d read the first. But this doesn’t say much for a novel that brings on boredom and confusion in its suspense element.

To start, this series belongs to Tradd Street’s Melanie and Jack’s oldest daughter, Nola Holmes. Where Tradd Street was set in Charleston, Royal Street is set in New Orleans. The focus on city history through architecture is still present, but not to the same extent. I could tell because I delightedly Googled Charleston architecture countless time to my one or two Googles this time around. Still, I liked Nola’s Creole cottage renovations, her struggle to help her friend-and-maybe-more Beau and to make a life for herself on her own. I particularly loved the visit Melanie, Jack, and the twins, JJ and Sarah, paid. But what I really loved was Nola’s mouthy, brilliant, hair-spray-wielding friend and roommate, Jolene, and their adorable dog, Mardi (yes, of Mardi Gras). Jolene dresses him in a variety of themed outfits and those were the best bits of the novel…uh, doesn’t say much, does it? Yet it was charming and Jolene jumped off the page with her humour and heart.

What didn’t jump off the page? The mystery of Beau’s sister, Sunny, and the saga of her childhood kidnapping, the woo-woo ghosts inspired sniggers rather than suspense, and what has always frustrated me about White’s paranormal mysteries: how mean her heroes are. Beau, like Jack, is attracted to Nola, but doesn’t hesitate to ask her to reconnect with an old boyfriend who hurt her, to put herself in a precarious place emotionally and physically. I was caught up in the scenes they shared, but I didn’t respect myself in the morning. If you’re a White fan, like I was, thanks to Tradd Street, you’ll want to read Prytania; if this is your first White, you’ll appreciate her better if you start with Tradd Street. As for Prytania, well, Miss Austen and I have to agree it offers “tolerable comfort,” Mansfield Park.

Karen White’s The House on Prytania is published by Berkley and was released on May 9th. I received an e-ARC, from Berkley, via Netgalley. This does not impede the expression of my honest opinion.

Do you ever just read a book and know that it isn’t for you but you can see why people will love it? Well, that was the case for me with this one. I wanted to enjoy the main character Nola, I mean she does her own home renovations which is amazing, but I just found her grating and annoying overall. I found the pacing a bit slow and my thoughts kept drifting – which is a sign the book isn’t holding my attention. I did enjoy the gothic style, that is always one that wins for me. I really wanted to enjoy this one, but I did ultimately end up DNFing this one at about the 50% mark.

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for my advanced e-arc in exchange for this honest review.

Very much enjoyable, I love Jolene- she’s a great side character. It’s just a little dragged out and needed more Melanie! Karen never disappoints though!

I am so glad this series is still going! A brilliant author and wonderfully complex characters. We’ve known our heroine since she was a child. Or did we? We learn more about her in every book, and more about the house she is renovating.
There are ghosts, of course, but what are they trying to say? Who is the bad guy here?

The books in the Royal Street series are best read in the order of release. The mysteries wrap up, but there is an overall story arc. I tried to avoid spoilers for the first book, The Shop on Royal Street.

Nola is still renovating her Creole Cottage and despite the events in The Shop on Royal Street, she isn’t ghost free. While Nola herself isn’t psychic, she grew up around those who can hear & see the dead. She can sense ghosts, see traces of them, and even smell cigar smoke. Apparently the ghosts are trying to send a message warning Beau, but he isn’t listening.

Nola has feelings for Beau, but he isn’t available. There is something there and I keep waiting for something to develop. They are friends and he is managing her renovations. He can communicate with ghosts. However, he is ignoring them, and even fears them. The ghosts are making themselves known to Nola and family members. Beau still wants justice for what happened to his sister and his girlfriend enlists Nola’s help.

From guests of Michael Herbert and his parents to taking graveyard tours, this tale had it all. Nola’s parents come to visit and have a surprise visitor with them. The story has a small-town vibe to it and I enjoyed mingling with Nola’s friends and family.

The story that unfolds was delightful with some ghostly suspense and twists. I figured some things out early on and felt like the author kept hitting me over the head with it. I loved Nola’s meddling parents, her sister and, of course, her best friend and roommate. The foodie talk had me drooling.

The characters pull you in just as much as the mystery. White brings New Orleans and its history to life from Jackson Square to shotgun houses. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

One of my absolute favorite series is Karen White’s Tradd Street series. When it came to an end, I was not ready to let the characters go. Thankfully White created a new spinoff series, Royal Street, and I’m still getting all the characters I love and new cast characters that are just so fun! Of course, I could not get enough of the mystery, ghosts, and more in book two, The House on Prytania.

What appealed to you the most in this story?

Just getting to dive into more mystery, suspense and the lives of each of the characters was the best! However, the characters are what make this story so alive…Including the dead ones! I’ve already fallen in love with Nola’s close friends and the humor and levity they bring to the story. Seriously, Jolene is the absolute best friend any girl could ask for, and her one-liners are perfect for some laugh out loud moments. I cannot get enough of her, and hope that she gets her own book in the near future of this series. Then, add in some more characters that you will love, and you have the makings for an excellent support system to help Nola continue to tackle the renovations on her new home and the ghosts that keep circling.

How was the setting?

Karen White is the master of pulling you into a story and making you feel like you are standing right there with the characters in lush and detailed atmosphere. I loved getting to explore the streets (potholes), restaurants, customs, cemeteries and Parishes in New Orleans through Nola’s eyes.

Do I need to have read The Tradd Street series in order to understand this new spinoff series?

No! You can start this series and begin a whole new adventure and life with Nola and not feel like you have missed a thing. Now I do have to say that the Tradd Street series is one of my favorites and I’ve reread it several times, so if you haven’t read it yet I HIGHLY recommend you dive into it now!

How was the pace?

This story held a steady pace

Do you recommend this book?

Heck yes, I do!! This book is both funny, sad, and suspenseful at times; the multiple mysteries are all interesting; and the ghosts run the gamut from being heartwarming to exceedingly creepy and dangerous. It is truly a great book and series. Now to attempt to patiently wait for book three!

I’ve read all of the books in the Tradd Street series and I read the previous book in this series. I have enjoyed them all and liked most. But I just can’t recommend this book. The book references events in the first book way too much. Which would be fine, I guess, if the first book was at all memorable. Which it isn’t. The main characters family visits briefly, and it serves no purpose. And the love triangle, or quadrangle, as it were, also serves no purpose. I don’t know why I kept reading, because the book is ridiculous. This book is a mess and the author has written books that are so much better!

Second in the Royal Street series. Psychics and evil spirits teem in New Orleans threatening the comfort Nola Trenholm is building for herself. While she and her roomate, Jolene, an absolutely original and charming character, live in an apartment, Nola works on restoring her haunted cottage. Family secrets keep the lightness at bay. And more will come out. Entertaining paranormal suspense. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love the Tradd Street series and most of Karen White’s books but not this one. I like most of the characters in the spin-off series (Jolene!) but the plot did not hold weight in this book ie the reasons behind the kidnapping. Also, the through the writing I am not sensing any sort of special connection between Nola and Beau even though the reader is reminded of it constantly. Beau kind of sucks as a character.

These stories have so much going on, it’s difficult not to get wrapped up in them. I like the paranormal elements that enhance but don’t overpower the story; there is still plenty of action without the ghosts. I can’t help but see so many similarities to the other series, almost as if this is the same story but with younger characters in a different city. This also ran a little longer than I thought it needed to but I enjoyed it just the same. I was particularly happy with the addition of the Northshore and Abita Springs, although if it’s going to snow, EVERYBODY is going to know about it and it won’t just sneak up on you. Also, there’s plenty of hotels about 5 miles down the road so no need to share the one hotel room (saw that romance trope coming a mile away). Highly recommended for a creative story and wonderful characters but I miss Melanie and Jack.

3.5 Stars. I love Karen White’s Tradd Street series and this is a good spin off. There are so many iconic New Orleans places mentioned that it’s like a little guide book which is fun. I also love her characters that are charming but also flawed.

That being said this just wasn’t my favorite in the series. It seemed a bit slow at points and the mystery was intriguing but not as good as some of the ones in the other books. Still if you are into cozy mysteries with some romance and a southern setting these books are great.

I’ll admit that I was disappointed when the Tradd Street series ended, but I am loving this spin off just as much.

Nola has turned into a great woman and character. I’m glad we saw so much of Jolene in this book; she is becoming a favorite character. I was tickled to see so much of Nola’s family in this book and loved her and Sarah working together. I can’t wait for the next one!
