Blue Monday #3

Blue Monday, Vol. 3: Inbetween Days

Rate this book
Holidays inspire a lot of different reactions in people. For instance, Clover hates the sappiness of Valentine's Day, while Bleu loves Halloween. Clover also hates St. Patrick's Day and how people have turned it into an orgy of green beer and leprechauns, but both girls like April Fool's Day and how it inspires Victor to dig out his goth gear from the days of yore. The third volume in the popular BLUE MONDAY series is a collection of short stories about the gang's travails over the various seasonal functions. Love blooms, ghost stories abound, and there just may be more than a few party-induced hallucinations. Even on their In-between Days, Chynna Clugston-Major's cast of cut-ups can't avoid getting into hilarious trouble.

The only thing that I probably miss from my teenage years was the fact that I dodn't have a friend who like music as much as I do and well a nice group of friends to hang out all the time, not just party and sex, just hang out and talk, just like this group, just like this comic book... I think if you love music, brit fashion and mod culture you probably are in love by this point with this comic book

Slightly better, but still not really worth the time. I think this series could have worked when I was younger and less concerned with seeing how the little behaviors stack up to really gross ones as adults, but now, it is really hard to look past how creepy these so called friends are to the girls in their life. It got a bit repetitive and tired quickly. Maybe I am just too old for the manga tropes now. Who knows?

I thought this was the most emotionally satisfying of the Blue Monday volumes. There is actually some progress on the relationships between the characters and a couple moments that gave me real feels. I also appreciated that they were mostly longer stories instead of the shorter ones that populated the first two issues.

Probably my favorite. You can definitely see the progression and development of both the characters and storyteller.

The first two volumes of Blue Monday were mostly focused on Bleu. This one shifts focus to Clover and Victor, and their crushes on each other. We see the development of their relationship through a few holidays. It starts with Halloween, which is mostly just a goofy comic where they tell "scary" stories riffing on popular Halloween movies. After that is Christmas, which is more silliness. Valentine's Day is where it starts to get more serious, and is a really, really sweet story. Chynna is very effective in showing how Clover and Victor feel about each other, and the ending is sweet. Then comes St. Patrick's Day, for more comedy, as the Irish Clover hates the holiday, and gets increasingly angry and drunk, climaxing in a confrontation with lecherous leprechauns. And, finally, is April Fool's Day, which is also Victor's birthday. It's more comedy, with another sweet ending.

This book is a little uneven in parts. But most of it is great. It's funny, but Chynna's also got a good insight into what it's like to be a teenager. Her art is very manga-esque, and it fits the tone of the book well.

Book three in the Blue Monday series.

A collection of short stories about the way Bleu and her friends feel about different holidays. Bleu loves Halloween, but Clover hates both Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day. The whole gang loves April Fool's Day, especially when Victor comes up with the best prank ever.

Of course, the Pooka and the twin Jesus heads show up to cause a little extra strangeness.

First time rereading this since high school. I wish the pages were a bit bigger since the process of shrinking it down has left mountains of itty bitty type everywhere. Other than that it's just as funny as I remembered it. Seeing Clover get black out drunk and start beating the shit out of her neighbor's lawn gnomes on St Patrick's Day when she thought they were a bunch of out of control leprechauns still does my heart good.

A disappointing continuation to a series that started off fun. I can only hope for better in the fourth volume. If I didn't already have the fourth volume, after reading this one, I wouldn't go out of my way to read it. But as I already have it, I will read it anyway.

Unfortunately, the language and lowbrow humor have taken over more in this than previous volumes, and the story quality has plummeted. I felt the earlier art was better too.
