Lukia Nanami is turning seventeen. Her family has just moved to a town by the sea, and on her first walk down to the beach, she saves a handsome surfer from drowning. The next day, she’s shocked to discover he’s not only a classmate at her new school, but has no idea who she is, and insists he was saved by a mermaid! A new chapter in the saga of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch, from original artist Pink Hanamori!
The most frustrating part of this book is that I'm definitely going to read the next one. That's irritating, because this is not a great volume, and many of the issues I remember from the original series (released in English by Del Rey back in the day) are present here. The major one is that the mermaids don't look like actual mermaids; they look like girls in ill-fitting mermaid fins and shell bras. Oddly the merman in the volume, the evil Laurent, looks fine, so I'm not sure what's going on here. Also, all of the teen mermaids from the first series still look like teenagers, which is a problem given that Lucia's daughter Lukia is the seventeen-year-old heroine of this sequel.
The other major issue is that this simply isn't well-written. There's instalove, jumping pacing, and the baffling question of how Lukia has managed to not get wet in seventeen years, thus finding out she's a mermaid. Romantic lead Kurosuna is also a jerk of the first magnitude, making this read like a watered down version of Defying Kurosaki-kun combined with a half-assed mermaid fantasy.
But, damn it, I do want to know what happens next, just like I did with the original series. I don't know if that's a testament to Pink Hanamori's skill or my own stupidity, but I guess we'll find out when volume two is released.
Probably the cheapest spin-off I've seen for any shoujo manga, the original series wasn't stellar but at least it had plot progression and fun characters! Until this series ends its publication, I'm going to be the biggest hater for this series.
Having liked the anime and previous manga I was expecting new adventures with the daughter of Luchia but it seems as if the author didn't even try and is just riding on the success of her previous series. I can't really tell if it's out of laziness or fear of receiving backlash for deferring from the original story.
Rukia (the daughter) is a copy and paste image of her mother (Luchia) this made her lack character and personality, in fact the whole story is a copy and paste situation except for some minor changes that are negligible. To me it lacked creativity and made me wonder how an author that could be creative with the original manga in the past has now failed to use her imagination to come up with a decent story.
Also the art style doesn't seem what it used to be , the bodies of the mermaids and female characters seemed so vulgair compared to her previous work this was unnecessarily. Speaking about changes it annoyes me that she changed Seira's appearance by tampering with her iconic himecute hairstyle.
The reason that I keep reading it is just out of nostalgia and curiousity to where this is going since it's still publishing. So I think this manga is only interesting to either new readers who aren't familiar with the original manga or fans who are willing to eat up everthing that's been thrown to them out of nostalgia. The story in itself isn't bad but I don't appreciate that it's almost identical to the old one in many ways.
Back before streaming anime (yes I realize this ages me a bit) I remember going to download sites to grab various animated shows/movies that were fan translated (or fanlated for short) knowing anything that would be created state side would probably be edited to the point of being something different altogether. Among the various shows I sampled I do remember the Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch anime with of course mermaids and the magic of music but I did not read the manga nor did I ever get around to finishing it. Now it turns out this series is a direct sequel to that original series though familiarity with it is not strictly necessary to be able to understand or enjoy this series.
That said...tastes change over the years as do styles so I find myself liking the new series but not really being exited as questions start popping up in my head like if Lukia turns into a mermaid when she gets wet how did she avoid being a mermaid to the point she does not believe in them herself and also how are the parents with a 17 year old looking super young like they are teenagers too? There are also some kind of potential flashback scenes leading to a potential story about destined love as opposed to a simple love at first sight story as well as a story about being betrothed as opposed to choosing who you love so there are plenty potential of shoujo goodness I can see coming in the future.
When I was younger, I absolutely adored Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. I loved the manga, anime and all the songs. It had a very special place in my heart for many years when I was a teenager and it still has, so I was excited to learn that there's a sequel, even from the original artist.
Unfortunately, it's bad. The sequel just really badly recycled the original manga. The plot is almost the same. The characters of the OG look and behave the same even though at least 18 years should have passed. The artstyle looks... interesting. Most of the anatomy is messed up and especially the mermaid fins look like as if the mermaids are wearing costumes, because their buttcracks are emphasized and the human legs are more or less visible.
But the thing that bugs me the most: the main character Lukia, who's the daughter of Lucia and Kaito. Yes, she's got (almost) the same name as her mother. Also, she looks the same as her mother. And since the mangaka didn't bother to make Lucia look her age, I have a very hard time differentiating the two. It's just funny that the mangaka even acknowledged this, and said the difference are the eye lashes. THE EYE LASHES. Ok. I'm confused and pissed all the time.
This manga literally feels like it’s just a retelling of the original series all the way down to the mmc being saved by luchia’s daughter (Lukia) and being a surfer bro like kaito was in the original series. Not to mention the character designs for the original mermaids is way too similar to their children. I really was hoping it would expand more on the original series but it doesn’t seem as though that’s the case.
Wow, Just finished reading the first volume of the sequel series to Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch, So good!! Lucia and Kaitou's daughter Lukia is so cute! I am enjoying her story so far! really loved volume 1, looking forward to reading volume 2! definitely recommend if you love Mermaid Melody and have read the og manga or watched the anime and if you love shoujo manga or mermaid stories! : )
I read the original Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch years ago. This series can be read without reading the other series as the main characters are new. The old characters do appear, but they are now the adults/parents of the new ones. I'm really enjoying jumping back into the mermaid world.
This was surprisingly entertaining. It's definitely because of the nostalgia factors, since this is almost identical to the original. Btw this should not be targeted to kids...
