As we all know, Nietzsche was an horrendous old windbag whose tedious oeuvre is mere shelf-filler for unenlightened dullards who think they're getting something dangerous. This appreciation by contemporary German windbag Sloterdijk distils all the most wretched features of the old bore into a handy pocket-sized edition. We get the worthless speculative anthropology and history; the bad psychology; the yawnsome sermonising; and the very poor and unoriginal appraisals of ancient and modern thought. He wasn't a Nazi, but it's only his unwitting enrolment in the history of that movement gives us any reason to still bother about him today. Not much of a reason.

god is dead nietzsche nietzsche is dead god coffee mug
happy to announce to my friends and family that i am over my nietzsche phase. best parts of this book are centered around "biblical revisions" and the cult of individuality. like most of sloterdijk's work, apparently, he has interesting points of comparison but his observations and conclusions are difficult to parse. what does he mean, exactly, by things like "eulogies" and "gifts" in this context? kind of all over the place

Strange little book, relating to how we should see Nietzsche’s place in history as not a turning point in the rise of populism, but as a cog that would have been formed in any case. Bonus points for claiming Thomas Jefferson descended to “cognitive loserdom” after creating the Jefferson bible.

A decent, long-form meditation on Nietzsche's contribution to philosophy of language and linguistic norms. Although Sloterdijk signposts an argumentative essay in the introduction (or rather he signposts two different potential arguments), the following four chapters don't bear out a tight argument. Instead, each chapter wanders through some historical context and interpretative reading to draw out an interesting aspect of Nietzsche's contributions.
The writing style also cuts against a tight argument: Sloterdijk uses academese, which makes for some overly complex run-on sentences with buried verbs and ambiguous deictics (ie "pointer words" like this, that, these, those, it). Occasionally, these complex constructions result in beautiful phrasing; usually, they make the reader do unnecessary mental work—even rendering some passages impossible to confidently interpret in a single way. So the text lacks some clarity, but enough insights remain to warrant a read by those familiar with Nietzsche, philosophy of language, or intellectual histories. Plus, Sloterdijk's brings to bear his own set of provocative, Nietzschean claims:
"Languages are instruments of group narcissism, played so as to tune and retune the player; they make their speakers ring in singular tonalities of self-excitation" (8)
"The Enlightenment is a really a language game for cognitive winners, who continually deposit the premiums of knowledge and critique in their accounts, and exhibit their cultural funds, while faith gets increasingly hidden behind a barrier of embarrassment, to be crossed only when one is among like-minded others, and, moreover, is ready to give up the advance boasting potential of the Enlightenment" (25)
"As text-composer, Jefferson performs the literary imperative of Modernity: Where legend existed, the news must come! At stake now is to swap all sacred agents for terrestrial heroes. Jesus can only be the hero of a novel or a participant in discourse" (26)
"The discursive event which bears the name Nietzsche is characterized by the infringement, within him, of the high-culture separation between the Good News and self-celebration" (51)
"Fascisms, past and future, are politically nothing other than insurrections of energy-charged losers, who, for a time of exception, change the rules in order to appear as victors" (77)
"On an intellectual level [Nietzsche] is a radical bisexual, a star which fevers to be penetrated, and a sun which penetrates and 'prevails'" (80)
"Nietzsche could be described as the discoverer of hetero-narcissism: what he ultimately affirms in himself are the othernesses which gather in him and make him up like a composition" (81)

In Sloterdijk’s typical fashion of obscure sources and arriving at conservative talking points from odd angles, his basic point here was that the idea that Nietzsche’s work sold the idea of a non- self- aware individualism- and even his lack of sanity- have to be called into question because of the tendency of people to misunderstand a general point and then run with that misunderstanding- especially when said person is amongst groups of people. Consequentially, Jefferson was to the Bible as Hitler supporters were to Nietzsche is the analogy that Sloterdijk sets up. Taken from a speech in 2000 and published in English in 2013 (I think).

Interesting essay on Nietzsche - memorable comparisons with Emerson and Jefferson, and American-style individualism.
The author glossed a bit on relating enlightenment/romanticism/modernism to his thesis, but did well relating Nietzsche's philosophy to the decadence of kitsch/populism, and the idea of the 'noble gift'.

This book is amazing! Although it is a speech (and as such, one's critique must take that into account instead of judging it as an extensive magnus opus, just as people judge Nietzsche posthumous "Will to Power" when that text were just notes, not a philosophical teatrise), his approach is very original. It is an interpretation of Nietzsche's work that I couldn't envision firsthand, and yet it is written in a clear way, contrary of Nietzsche's writting. Nietzsche was full of powerful language, short aphorism that packed a punchy critique to 2,000 years of philosophy (aphorisms that need hours of thought in a mind full of historical and philosophical references), while Sloterdijk uses wording that puts forward a thought systematically. Nevertheless, Sloterdijk ultimately accepts being a follower of Nietzsche's "gospel".

I love that we are in a time period where we can finally acknowledge the huge, gaping, narcissistic and ego-maniacal flaws in Nietzsche and still take him as a serious point of reference or analysis. Unfortunately, this book acknowledge the problems and then basically says it isn't Nietzsche's fault. It is still a fascinating analysis but the blocky and ridiculous language (the piece itself or an artifact of translation or perhaps the effect of being a speech?) are often in need of unpacking in volumes ten times the size of this slim thing. It's kind of hard to let all those ridiculous sentences slip by unanswered. Underneath it all is pretty fascinating, but it would have been nice to see this speech worked up into a more comprehensive volume, cleared of sentences that could not really be accounted for or have them opened up, analyzed and explained better.

A speech given on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Nietzsche's death. Interesting tour through Nietzsche's project, which Sloterdijk refers to as a "catastrophe in the history of language," and ultimately ending with a comparison between Nietzsche the apostle of "free spirits" and Emerson the apostle of "non-conformism." Sloterdijk proclaims Emerson the winning "brand," suggesting that we live in a Emersonian rather than a Nietzschean head space: "our average thoughts and feelings are all made in the USA, not made in Sils-Maria." It's a mix of dense academic gobbledygook and sexy phraseology, both of which obscure more than they reveal some simple and genuine insights into what Nietzsche set out to accomplish.

September 4, 2022This was interesting; Sloterdijk seems to spend a lot of time thinking about this thesis, and he does argue it well; however, I don't think this essay is complete enough for any more significant conclusions.

Excellent speech, brought down somewhat by a few gamer moments.

A different perspective on Nietzsche. Highly recommend it.

I don't know all that much about Peter Sloterdijk, other than he was very influenced by Gilles Deleuze, one of my big influences. This was a nice little short book about Nietzsche. Short books about philosophy are rare. I'll always remember where it ends, talking about Nietzsche and the Sun, something to the effect of "Let's remember Nietzsche this way, happy, lying in the sun.

Another low point for the Intervention Series.
This book is entirely too short, and while I understand it's from a speech, isn't as elaborated as it could be. I'm not even entirely sure what Sloterdijk's revelations are. He seems to meander through the appropriation and "cutting-up" of biblical texts (which I enjoyed thinking about) and how one's use of language creates them as a brand. In Nietzsche's case, he becomes the brand of individualism taken forth by Oscar Wilde and perverted by National Socialism. The thoughts on this fall short of anything amazing. I would be interested in learning more, but as a published set of ideas, this book is weak.
