Super-trashy juvenile deliquent novel looks like a YA book, but contains way too much profanities, violence, sleaziness and sex for the genre. Follow the sad destiny of the Cotter children. Their parents have been kill by some drunken rich boy in a Trans-Am and they are now at the mercy of an absurdly inadequate social system. Contains extremely badly managed orphanages and prison farms. My amazed reading of this sordid epic constantly alternated between disgust and hilarity. Fascinating! The author may has been a probation officer for teenagers before writing this and many other super-dark "social" novels, but his writing borders on parody. Ends with a surprising super-happy finale!
