Remember those old movies where a group of scrappy kids works to save the old movie theatre, drive in, soda shop, record store, or whatever? This is a literary derivative of that old trope.
Readers are introduced to the fmc as she walks out on her old life and into a whole new cast of characters who are all characters. Everyone is both extremely friendly and has one quirky trait that defines their character. Julian loves one-night stands. It’s the only thing anyone talks about regarding Julian. Jimmy is a cursed to live as a toy dog. No other descriptions necessary. Basil is a wet sandwich who can’t handle anything. Raymond is sabotaging the hotel. Adele is mean. Valen is the mysterious future love-interest. Ezra magically fixes everything. Need a couture ball gown in an hour? Ezra. Dinner party for 9? Ezra. Need an expedited divorce? Ezra. The character should have been named Deus Ex Machina.
I dislike stories that make women weak, and although Merlie had a few bursts of witch magic, she was otherwise weak. I implore female authors to stop making their characters stereotypes- weak, controlled by men, oblivious to affairs, cowering, et al. You are doing the female race a huge disservice. The story was cute with fun characters, very little depth, very predictable, read it in about 2.5 hours.
The Starlight Witch By Kim Richardson This was a great first in-series book about supernatural creatures living in a hotel with normal people. The main character, a rare starlight witch witch, is hired to find who is killing people at the hotel. There's great characters, a fun plot, a touch of romance, a mystery, and a great ending! Can't ask for more!
After losing her husband, our secret witch finds herself living in a magical hotel with a group of fun, crazy characters... and several dead bodies. As a magical detective with special powers, the hotel hires her to find out who is killing these people. All of the characters are enjoyable to read about, and the ending was, in my opinion; very satisfying. I'm looking forward to reading the next book!
I honestly thought that Leana was driven way too much by her libido to be able to work as Merlin properly. I mean, yes, there was mere investigation about who was responsible behind demons making havoc at Twilight Hotel... but in the end, the way they found out the villain, it all came to chance. Nobody guessed it. They went to the roof and found the villain. That was it.
There were a lot of scenes of Leana thinking about Valen though... even during the big final battle ()
BUT, but... I had to admit that I LOVED the found family of tenants at Twilight Hotel 13th Floor. They were all marvelous. I also had soft spot for Jimmy the toy dog (OMG his background story!!). These side characters were fantastic, and I thought they were the backbone of Leana being able to do her job. I loved this book for them!!
PLUS, I loved the whole universe. Leana will probably grow on me. I'm already eyeing the second book....
🇬🇧 I was expecting something more! Leana is a witch 🔮 but not just any witch, a STAR WITCH. Okay and so what? Where is the story? Where is the magical world? A jumble of paranormal races thrown into the book at random, without a minimum of explanation! But some positive notes ✅: cute, smooth flowing, quick read and...Jimmy I love you! Several negative notes 🅰️: I didn't understand (among many things) the subdivision of witches: white, dark. stellar, sorceresses and what have you; repetitive sentences, all from the point of view of a woman who is supposed to be 40 but looks like a novice girl! a detective? AHAHAH
For fantasy lovers I recommend it only as light reading. If you want the passion of a full paranormal world, drop this read!
I'm deeply disappointed in the fatphobic writing in this book. I was mostly enjoying the idea. The love interest was weak, and the side characters needed work, but overall, it was okay. Until I got to the "fat chef" character who apparently isn't aware there is clothing for all sizes, so her jacket "stretched across her belly." She was also sweating a lot and couldn't quite reach the table as her stomach kept bumping into it. Come on, it's 2023. Can't we move past this ridiculous stereotyping. Didn't finish the book after this.. sorry.
This book had me interested from the first chapter. It's starts off with a witch married to a complete douchebag and she leaves him. Yay for her! After leaving her ex she sets out with nothing but a bag of clothes for an interview at famous paranormal hotel. Only once she arrives and gets hired in the spot dies she gets informed about all the murders of the paranormal guests. Time for her to work her magic and investigate.
The MC was funny and her retorts etc remind me of myself. She's witty and has just the right smartass attitude to make me love her. As for the other characters she soon befriends, they were loveable right off the get go.
She runs smack dab into a sexy man beast who is both mysterious and a little grumpy. Always popping up in her thoughts as well as in places he shouldn't be.
Overall I enjoyed the read. There are other books in this series that I will read later for sure.
💬 Monsters, magic, and demons—oh my! I really enjoyed this as an audiobook. I was looking for something spooky and fun to close out October, and this book was exactly the vibe I wanted. It’s playful and fun, yet packed with action and mystery.
The Starlight Witch didn't quite resonate with me. In my opinion, if you're looking for a spellbinding read that will leave you bewitched and craving more, The Starlight Witch might not be it. I dove into this book with hopes, ready to be whisked away into a world of detective witches, magic, demons, and a funny toy dog. However, the storyline felt a bit cheesy, and I struggled to get invested in the characters and plot. And let's not forget about Valen. The anticipation of some steamy scenes fizzled out when I got closer to the end and nothing. Perhaps it was me, not the book, that wasn't in the right mood for this magical journey, or maybe this witchy tale didn't cast its spell on me. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I want to continue with the series after reading this
The Starlight Witch is the first book in the Witches of New York by Kim Richardson.
Leana has finally had enough of her husband behavior when she found him in bed with another woman. She leaves but now she don't know where to go and she's broke. When a job offer comes from The Twilight Hotel, a paranormal hotel in Manhattan she can't refuse. She find out that three murder happens at the Hotel, one of them is a Merlin like herself. She will find help from some resident at the Hotel and she will need their help to figure who's summoning the demon responsible for the murders.
I have really loved this new serie and cannot way for the sequel. I have received an arc of this book from the author.
I really enjoyed this book. The female lead character is well written and confident in her powers. The first chapter she finds her husband in bed with another woman and as a punishment, breaks is manhood. I was sucked in from the first page. The story moves along nicely and has many funny moments. Really fun reading.
Quick read. And a cute story. There were some very funny moments, a lot of magic moments, and a start of a love story. I enjoyed it and am on to the next book.
This could have been such a good story. But the writer changed things all the time as if she forgot what she had written a couple of chapters earlier. I just couldnt... Couldn't finish :(
The “Witches of New York” is a great beginning woe a series about a starlight witch, Leana. A starlight witch is neither a white or dark witch but rather a witch who gains her powers through the starlight and full moon.
After coming home from work early Leana discovers her rat of a husband in bed with a 23 year old bimbo. After a rather heated discussion Leana reveals that she is a witch and breaks her husband’s penis. Yep, can you say, “Ouch!” Oh well only good things for good people.
Then she gets a job interview with the Twilight Hotel as a Merlin or protector. The Twilight Hotel is lodging for paranormals. Regular humans can’t even see it. They have had a series of murders and they want Leana to solve them before the hotel’s reputation is ruined.
Soon it becomes clear that there is a demon problem and Leana is just hoping that the hot and sexy restaurant owner from next door is not involved. It is clear that he is holding onto secrets of his own.
This was a fun first read in the series. There is plenty of levity, mystery and action. Additionally there are a bevy of quirky and interesting characters. My only complaint is that there is not much depth to the series. However, we will see what future installments have to offer.
Not a bad storyline and the execution was ok. I found the characters were a bit uninspired but book 2 might build them up a bit more. It just felt very rushed, the FMC walks out of her marriage and straight in to co-habitation with a group of other paranormals she immediately trusts and they become best friends. The MMC (who clearly is to become her love interest) was too cliche for me; broody and secretive. It had some interesting aspects, new paranormals and Jimmy the toy dog was a fun character it’s a pity his curse was broken (dozens of people searching for over 50 years to find the sorceress and the Leanna finds her and breaks it with little to no effort at all??) It just wasn’t a story I felt drawn in by and I don’t feel the urgent need to read the next instalment.

I'm actually confused by all of the high ratings lmao.
This story reads like it's what a 15 year old imagines what it's like to be 25... and the main character is in her 40s? Every character is so juvenile, and all they think about is sex? They're in a life or death situation, and the fmc is too busy staring at the mmcs junk. One of the friends' only character traits is that he sleeps with anything that breathes. This barely even scrapes the surface of everything wrong with this story.
I actually thought this book was written in 2008, and it didn't stand the test of time. Imagine my surprise when I see 2022 as the publication date.
A few reviewers called this a light read. Light reads can be pleasant and well written. This wasn't. It was a cookie-cutter formula and falls flat. Don't waste your time.
