It’s time to finally do a misc read. Archive is littered with randomly 90's stuff I have had on my tbr for ages. Sometimes this gives us middling results which is why I kinda stepped away from those in favor of stuff from my library and so on.
But we're back. This 1993 is from Madge Harrah who has some works for various ages although nothing too crazy. Not much horror stuff it seems.
This one follows our kid Carole Benson, who is moving to a new house. This house belongs to Uncle Jake, who is taking them in after Mom went through a divorce. Jake had his own hardship with the sudden death of his young daughter.
He's an inventor/toy maker person and had dolls made in her likeness. She happened to look like Carole so seeing dolls like her around freaks out. Then freaky things happen, with it seeming like maybe the ghost of Patty is in one of the dolls.
Oh and Jake is gone, and he may not just be out for a hike. So yeah, a bit going on here. It seems like a basic ghost/doll romp at first but soon it unravels. It's good, flowing enough and not seeming too complicated.
It feel that way, with the doll aspect being there so Carole can pretend to be one later to fake out the bad guy. The emotional aspect is nice, as Carole learns to accept this new home.
It leads to some mature moments. The mom is decent as while there is some classic disbelief antics, she tries to be understanding. There's even the inclusion of a child psychologist.
It ends up being more of a mystery with just mild spookyness, which isn't quite what was advertised. But that works in making this kinda charming and unique.
The culprit is so predictable that I thought it was a red herring but nope. The villain is fairly generic. While there is an ending to Carol's arc, with a parallel to Uncle, I wish it was deeper.
The ending itself is a bit abrupt, and her deal could have tied into the mystery. Also, writing can be clunky at times; especially the dialouge. It can take away from it early on.
So with all that said, this one is good. A mild good so the curse stays but it did have more to it than I expected. Maybe too much at times.
But it has enough that makes it intriguing and nice. Won't stick out as a fave or anything but it ended up working well enough.
That's about it. No idea what it is next, but hopefully this gets my mojo back. Valentine's fat is next week so expect a read for that, if all works out.
