Such great insight and wisdom. Definitely catch myself going through motions from time to time or approaching God as a business partner rather than seeking relationship with the Lord and letting Him be the lover of my soul. Convicting and moving.
This is a jazzily written book that is fun to read, but it contains a lot of things worth thinking about.
The author's friend Brad said to him, "Eric, the problem with suburbia is that it's perfectly designed to anesthetize us from pain. It puts a veneer of wholeness on the outside, and allows hollowness to thrive on the inside" (p. 161).
To Eric, suburbia represents a spiritual state of being, and the book is largely about getting out of the kind of suburbia his friend was talking about.
This book was a slow read. I liked it pretty well. Sometimes the author (a pastor) tries to be too relevant and can consequently say some pretty out-of-the-box things, but eh. I might revisit this again someday (I own it anyway).
