When the Doctor and Mel visit the National Foundation for Scientific Research as it celebrates its centenary, Mel expects only to be able to catch up with her uncle. She doesn’t expect to meet her own ancestors...
What is buried in the grounds of the Foundation?
What secret has Henry Hallem kept from his descendants for three hundred years?
Can Mel escape her own past?
Visiting your relatives can sometimes be trying, but surely it should never be this difficult?
Hmmm, digging into companion family history is always interesting - a little awkward when you nearly make yourself your own grandpa. I enjoyed this mostly although the adventure is a but asinine.
Let's be honest, it is rarely a good idea for Doctor Who to actually integrate time travel into the narrative past explaining how they got to where the story begins. But this story is ridiculously fun. Bonnie Langford carries it quite brilliantly and not enough can be said about how well Big Finish has turned one of the most disliked TARDIS teams into one you truly look forward to. It's a loopy time travel, butterfy effect, Catch-22 story, and I grinned from beginning to end.
In Catch-1782, the Sixth Doctor takes Mel to visit her scientist uncle, and then has to rescue her from a timewarp in which she risks being married off to one of her own ancestors. The plot is not very original, but Bonnie Langford is terrific as Mel in this - clearly Big Finish allowed her to find depths in the character that were impossible on TV.
The Sixth Doctor and Mel attend the centenary celebrations for the National Foundation for Scientific Research. Looking into her family history and thanks to a temporal accident, Mel discovers that finding out the answers to a mystery within it may entail becoming part of history itself.
The Doctor and Melanie goto visit Melanie's uncle at a science research facility. While there Melanie gets interested in her family history and gets transported back to the 18th century with the help of a mysterious canister. Can the Doctor find her and bring her back?
I really enjoyed this. Mel was definitely at her best. There was no screeching or drama. It was a nice spooky time travel historical story. There was no real bad guys, no aliens, just interesting characters and a bit of a mystery.
The plot wasn't terrible original, but I really enjoyed the acting and the humor. I'm always amazed at the small details Big Finish puts into their audio, like the cat meowing in the office.
