Rate this book
In a world dying due to toxins in the air, water, and soil, no babies have been naturally conceived in years.

But RaShell Bionics has a solution to solving the problem of the decreasing population; genetically engineered hybrid clones with the ability to reproduce.

That is, until the discovery of an underground settlement and its secrets changes everything.

Now Sabine Reed, a geneticist from RaShell, has fled her lab to join the settlement and uncover the key to restoring the world. With the help of ex-security officer, Xander Mitchell, she hatches a plan to convince the head of RaShell Bionics to stop using clones to reproduce.

I tore through this bad boy in a day and a half.
Science fiction should do three things: entertain you, excite your imagination, and make you think.
By those metrics, this is phenomenal work. Jodi Jensen hit it out of the park.
Imagine living in a place where you believe that no one is capable of having babies. Then imagine how you would feel if some mad scientist created clones and tried to make them reproduce. Think about how that would go and all the possible problems that could stem from such an endeavor.
Placed in an impossible situation, the main characters, Sabine and Xander, are forced to make some tough decisions for the greater good.
What results is a tale that is at times moving, sometimes gut wrenching, and all the time captivating, yet it all feels plausible. Throw in a misguided bad guy or two and you have the makings of a dystopian classic. The foundation has been laid for something spectacular. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the saga unfolds.

There is a LOT packed into this novella!

Children of RaShell is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat, sci-fi (hopefully) thriller that leaves the reader begging for more.

What would you do if the fate of the world was in your hands?

“Children of RaShell” by Jodi Jensen is a captivating novella set in a post-apocalyptic world.

The protagonist, Xander, awakens to an unsettling reality where children’s laughter, a sound unheard for nearly two decades, fills the air. The narrative thrusts the reader into a bleak, childless society, compellingly unravelling the mysteries and challenges Xander faces.

Jensen’s writing is immersive, combining elements of suspense and science fiction, and skilfully paints a picture of a dystopian future. The story’s strength lies in its ability to engage readers, making them ponder the profound implications of a world without the innocent sound of children.

It’s a thought-provoking and intense read, ideal for those who enjoy speculative fiction with a poignant twist.

Book one - Cliffhangers!!! I want to read the rest of the story. This is a fast-paced read and will keep you reading as it holds your interest with this storyline.

Living underground there is a huge lake that heals people, animals, and nature. Women are pregnant and have children. Above this underground settlement, everything is destroyed due to the toxins unless you are in a facility where the toxins can't infiltrate. People can't reproduce, and someone has to find a way to save the people. Gavin runs RaShell, a lab where they have cloned children to reproduce. Not everything works out according to plan. Gavin believes he is the only one who can save the world by cloning children to resemble him and his wife by using their DNA.

Various people like Sabine, Dalton, and Xander are trying to save the world by healing them. They are met with violence, death, and destruction.

Watch for Book 2 to continue reading this great story.

This fast-paced, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic world thriller challenged my casual assumptions about cloning ethics and the consequences of such experimentation on everyone involved. The meaning of the title took me by surprise - no wonder in a novella that seethes with violence, betrayal, death & destruction. The cliff-hanger ending made me hope the author is hard at work writing a sequel because I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I want to know what happens next!

In a dystopian future where toxins have rendered the air, water, and soil uninhabitable, humanity faces extinction due to the cessation of natural conception. RaShell Bionics proposes a controversial solution: genetically engineered hybrid clones capable of reproduction. However, the discovery of a hidden underground settlement with its own mysterious secrets upends everything. Sabine, a geneticist from RaShell, escapes her lab to join the settlement, determined to find a way to restore the world alongside Xander, an ex-security officer.

Children of RaShell, by Jodi Jensen, is a compelling dystopian narrative that explores the boundaries of science and ethics. From the outset, the story captivates with its richly detailed setting. Xander's constant questioning of his seemingly impossible surroundings adds a layer of intrigue, especially for dystopian fans, as it subtly hints at the fractured world they inhabit. Despite being just two hundred pages long, the book is a page-turner. Jensen employs a dialogue-driven approach, which contrasts with the more introspective focus of other dystopian tales. This makes the narrative more natural and accessible, especially during the scientific explanations that are integral to the plot. The story's exploration of survival themes is nuanced and distinctive. Unlike typical dystopian narratives that focus on preserving the remnants of humanity with available technology, Children of RaShell introduces a new breed of beings, offering a controversial solution that raises profound moral questions. This innovative approach compels readers to ponder the ethical implications of such a solution, making the story highly relevant to contemporary debates despite its fictional setting.

Children of RaShell is a short novel rich with both entertainment value and thought-provoking insights. Jensen's creative take on biology and humanity leaves readers eager for more. This debut promises a bright future for the series, and I look forward to seeing what else the author has in store. This book is a must-have for any bookshelf, blending thrilling storytelling with profound ethical considerations.

A run of the mill yet entertaining story about clones and a dying world. Although I never bought the characters, I did think Sabine's epic journey through the wilderness back to the settlement while carrying a serious injury was well written. I liked the jumping between her and the male KC, Xander.

The back half of the book was fast paced and suspenseful but after a weak start which lacked any tension, I was sufficiently invested in the story to love it. I liked it though.

There were some troublesome things like Xander being 'impressed' by the girls so many times. There are lots of other ways to say and show someone being impressed. I also didn't understand the behaviour of the villain on pp178 & 183. I felt generally the villain was undercooked in terms of character development so when he did what he did, it didn't make sense to me.

I particularly liked the death of someone (no spoiler) on p.182 which I thought was moving and well written. Despite a few highlights, The Children of RaShell was a little too cookie cutter for me and lacked enough flair to lift up above the pack.

The open ending set up for a sequel does pique my curiosity though.

Let's start with, yes, I'm biased. I edited this boook, so I have some skin in the game. But if I didn't love it, I wouldn't waste your time or mine.

This book is a gem of hope in a world that, much like ours, has tipped in the wrong direction. Dystopia? Check. Evil run a bit wild? Check. Science that could change the course of things, creepy yet delightful children, heroic journeys that will have you chewing your fingernails? Or toenails, if you prefer...

Check checkity check check. Go read Children of Rashell. It's a great ride with promise of... awww, no. That would be spoiling things...

In a near-future where humanity's only hope for procreation is clones, Jensen takes on an adventure of discovery. Discovery of the self, and discovery of a secret that will rock the human race.
Her characters feel like people you could know in your own life, and that makes it so easy to get invested in their story.
Add in the intrigue and the suspense and you won't be able to put it down either.
A brilliant piece of writing that exudes the kind of curiosity I've only ever felt in sci-fi.

Exciting sci-fi thriller

The solution to Earth's failing population is clones designed to produce babies - but success is elusive. Then someone stumbles across children who shouldn't exist, and a chase starts to capture and control them and what caused them to flourish. Lots of excitement and twisty-turny betrayals, and a great ending that makes the wait for the sequel agonising.

I can’t say enough of this book by Jodi Jensen. It has all that a reader could hope for, intrigue, suspense, unique plot, mystery…did I already say intrigue? A true page turner. The earth is dying and there are no longer children being born. Are the children of RaShell the solution? The journey to solving the mystery is beautifully written by this up-and-coming author. I will be waiting on the edge of my seat for the sequel.

was nothing like I expected

I’m not usually into post apocalyptic books, but this was a pleasant surprise. Wish there was a little bit more world building and character development, but a pretty good read overall.

Children of RaShell is a great novella for people who have never tried sci-fi/bio-punk before and want to give it a go, though the subject matter is not for the faint of heart, so read the description first and judge accordingly whether the story is for you. If it is not, maybe check out the author’s time-travel romance series, which is very different in tone. This story is a fast read that is satisfyingly grounded in reality, despite the setting in a post-apocalyptic world with an advanced culture versus a hidden, more grass-roots society. Names, tech, and scenarios are entirely familiar and therefore relatable, despite the destroyed world in which the characters live. The author does a great job demonstrating, without being heavy-handed, the tragedy of everyone thinking they know what is best and better than everyone else and neglecting the opportunity for open communication. More so, Jensen shows us a frightening world through an almost serene narrative, at times, of what mindless breeding of children could look like. The end will keep you thinking about the story long after the final page.

Such a creative story. I thoroughly loved the mystery of this—learning about the individual characters, how they connect, their motives, their histories. This is a great dystopian novella, with lots of scientific intrigue, mixed with care for youngsters (which I loved), and a cliffhanger, as well as drama!
This definitely has scope to be expanded into a sequel & I can’t wait to see what happens next in this universe. Yet another great story by author Jodi Jensen.
