To Serve Man: A Cookbook for People

Rate this book
Some argue that cowboy meat is too tough to be served any other way, especially since the spices tend to kill the taste of whatever the donor may have been smoking, drinking, or chewing. Others discount this argument, but agree that Chili is a practical, quick way to serve Man in well-disguised form. Meat of 1 reasonably well-muscled Cowboy, ground coarsely
-- 15 pounds onions, chopped
-- 10 cloves garlic, crushed
-- 1/2 cup cooking oil
-- 25 pounds pre-cooked kidney beans
-- 25 pounds fresh tomatoes
-- 2 oz. salt
-- 6 to 12 oz. chili powder
-- 2 oz. sugar
-- 1/2 oz. pepper, freshly ground
-- ( 40 green bell peppers)
-- ( 3 tsp. paprika) On a frying grill or in a battery of skillets, brown onions, meat, and bell peppers (cut up)if used, for about 5 minutes per batch. Peel and quarter tomatoes. Put tomatoes, beans with their cooking water, and 2-1/2 gallons additional water in large kettle or wash boiler (or divide among several smaller ones). Add meat, onions, peppers if used, and seasonings. Simmer for 90 minutes; serve in bowls or with rice. For 150.

Five for bravery of the author to write and publish this, otherwise a four. As a fan of The Twilight Zone, Damon Knight, etc. I couldn't resist getting this book when I saw it roll through eBay. What you have is not a new version of a classic SF-story but rather a cookbook that gives humorous versions of recipes where human is a major ingredient (sorry, I don't know the pig>pork, cow>beef, human>? relationship to reference.). I don't suppose I will be trying any of these recipes out any time soon. What worries me are the people who have marked this book "to read" or "read" and then tagged it as "cook book." !!! Maybe they can tell me the word I am missing for human>?.

Now the tough decision. Do I put the physical copy of the book with SF or Cooking?

A fun book in a (baked) tongue in (roasted) cheek kind of way. Real recipes for when you want to have a friend for dinner.

The recipes could use some clearer instructions, but there are plenty of them for the real carnivore. Best is the useful information for harvesting the meat suppliers. Who to choose, how to intice them into the pot, how to avoid nosey authority figures. Turns out accountants in their thirties are good choices, not too tough and well marbled. Women and children are less desirable. Women because they have less meat on the hoof, and children because they also have little meat, are more easily missed, but mostly because they just don't taste as good.

Not surprisingly there are lots of recipes for offal and such. Waste not want not. I've already got some skewers and veggies for some Person Kabob. Going to invite the neighbor over for dinner later this week. Let you know how he turns out.
